We are a group surgical specialty practice which treats conditions of mouth, jaws and related facial structures. This encompasses a wide range of procedures such as removal of wisdom teeth, placement of dental implants, jaw fractures and management of pathologic conditions. Our Surgeons education includes 4 to 6 years of hospital-based residency training after dental school.

Dr. Robert received his BS in Applied Biology from Georgia Institute of Technology and his DDS from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. During his undergraduate and dental training he conducted research in bioengineering and then while in the U.S. Army conducted bone graft research at the Letterman Army Institute of Research. He completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery training at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He is currently in private practice and is Clinical Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco in the OMFS residency program. He directs the Office Anesthesia curriculum and co-directs the curricula in Major Surgical Anatomy and Dentoalveolar Surgery. He is recipient of the Outstanding Educator of the Year Award and the Distinguished Colleague Award at the School of Dentistry at UCSF. He is active in hospital affairs and chaired the sections of Oral Surgery and Dentistry at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco and Seton Medical Center in Daly City, California.

Dr. Robert is active in numerous committees and councils of the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He lectures nationally and internationally on a variety of topics including anesthesia, emergency preparedness, management of medical emergencies and orthognathic surgery. He chaired the Task Force which created the AAOMS DVD on Anesthesia and has authored chapters on anesthesia and pharmacology in current textbooks and articles in oral and maxillofacial surgery journals. He has been the recipient of the Committee Person of the Year on three occasions, the Presidents Award, and the Distinguished Service Award of the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the AAOMS Committee Person of the Year Award. He has participated in the California Careforce and local outreach programs to provide care for the underserved.

Mugdha Patwardhan, MPH, DDS, MD (Dr. Pat) completed her BS in biology at UC Riverside in 1995. She spent a year as a researcher in genetics studying transpositional elements and recombinant DNA technology. She then received her MPH at UCLA as an epidemiology major. She attended dental school at USC, was a member of the Psi Omega dental fraternity and participated in the USC Mobile Dental Clinic community outreach program. She completed her residency and obtained her M.D. at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia in New York City. Dr. Robert met Dr. Patwardhan several years ago through his friend and colleague Dr. Eric Scharf. When Dr. Robert underwent eye surgery, she was kind enough to provide coverage in our office until he could return to practice. This began a long and fond personal friendship for both Dr. Robert and our office staff. During the Covid 19 pandemic Dr. Pat has joined us again.

Although Dr. Pat enjoyed the ever-exciting lifestyle of New York City, her home state and family beckoned, and she decided to return to California and settle down in San Francisco. Her sister is an endodontist in San Francisco, so family is nearby. Here she gets the excitement of a big city but the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors as well. She loves jogging, weight training, concerts, museums and the infinite variety of restaurants we have (of course now so inaccessible because of Covid 19). All of that, and not to mention hanging out with her precious little niece, who fortunately lives nearby.

Joseph Yang, DMD, MD, MBE earned his BS from Tufts University and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He attended dental school at the University of Pennsylvania and simultaneously obtained his Masters degree in Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He graduated in the top ten of his dental school class and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. He completed his combined medical degree and his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at UCSF.

Dr. Robert has known Dr. Yang since he began his residency training at UCSF 8 to 9 years ago. Dr. Robert considers Dr. Yang to be one of the finest residents that he has trained at UCSF over the years. He and Dr. Yang have maintained the friendship they developed during Dr. Yangs training. We feel fortunate that Dr. Yang has joined us during the Covid 19 Pandemic.

Dr. Yangs wife is a physician who is now pursuing a breast surgery fellowship at UCSF, and the family has moved to the Noe Valley community with which they have fallen in love. Along the way they somehow found a way to get the family started and are now the proud parents of an incredibly cute 17 month old boy. A huge part of their lives is spent with their toddler, enjoying the great outdoors with nature hikes, foraging trails and coming home to cook meals together.
