Today, Americans are not only living longer we're also retaining our natural teeth longer than ever before. But this rosy picture isn't free of thorns: Older adults tend to require increasingly complex dental treatments; are often more prone to contracting certain diseases; and sometimes find it challenging to keep up with daily oral health practices.

Yet maintaining good oral hygiene is critically important as we age. When problems occur in the mouth, they can cause difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking and smiling basic functions which can affect both physical and social well-being. It's possible that medications prescribed for other diseases can adversely affect a person's oral health; it's also possible that a decline in oral health can worsen existing maladies (such as diabetes), or even cause systemic (whole-body) inflammation. What other special dental issues do older people face and what can be done about them?

Draper Parkway Dental - General dentist in Draper, UT

If you think cavities are just for kids think again! A recent study found that nearly one-third of people over 65 had untreated dental caries (cavities). In older people, these are found not only in the crown (chewing surface) of the tooth, but also in the root, which may become exposed due to gum recession. Regular dental checkups are the best way to find and treat dental caries; left untreated, they can cause pain, require more complex procedures, and eventually lead to lost teeth.

Gum disease is another major oral health issue faced by older people and it's presently the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. The disease is caused by plaque bacteria, which thrive on the sticky biofilm that clings to the surface of teeth when they aren't properly cleaned. Poor-fitting dentures can make the problem worse, as can the presence of certain diseases (such as diabetes or cancer).

Sometimes, decreased mobility (due to arthritis or similar conditions) makes routine brushing and flossing more difficult. Special brushes with larger grips and floss holders can help make daily cleaning easier; additionally, therapeutic mouthrinses may be prescribed. In-office treatments can also be effective in bringing gum disease under control.

Oral cancer is a concern at any age, but it's 7 times more likely to show up in a person over 65 and it causes more deaths in older Americans than skin cancer does. Early detection offers the best chance at controlling the disease, and improves survival rates significantly. A thorough screening for oral cancer should be a part of every older person's routine dental checkup.

Dry mouth (xerostomia) isn't just an annoyance it can be harmful to your oral health. Aside from its lubricating qualities, saliva contains beneficial digestive enzymes, acid neutralizers, and bacteria-fighting agents. A number of factors may cause the body to produce less saliva than normal but in older adults, this problem is often due to side effects from prescription or over-the-counter medications. If you're experiencing chronic dryness of the mouth, it's sometimes possible to change your medication, and/or use products designed to relieve these symptoms.

It was once commonly believed that dental problems and the loss of teeth were an inevitable consequence of aging. But here's the fact: Age itself isn't a risk factor for tooth loss; properly cared for, your teeth can last a lifetime. However, it's true that the mouth does change as you age. How can you give yourself the best chance of keeping your natural teeth? You guessed it: Maintain a regular practice of good oral hygiene!

Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush use one with a special grip, or an electric brush, if it helps. Clean in between your teeth with floss, or another type of interdental cleaner, at least once a day. If you wear dentures, regularly clean and care for them as instructed. Eat healthy foods and drink plenty of water. And don't forget to have regular dental exams so that little problems don't turn into major headaches!

Preparing for an upcoming root canal? This procedure is one that often causes anxiety; however, modern-day dentistry has allowed for serious innovations in technology, thus ensuring positive results that are achieved with little to no discomfort involved. In general dentistry, a root canal falls under the category of restorative work. When a tooth is in bad

Many individuals are familiar with gum disease. What may be unknown, however, is the relationship of diabetes to problems with the gums. Diabetes is the result of multiple diseases within the body that accumulate from too much sugar in the bloodstream. Sugar often becomes the culprit that is responsible for an individual's gum disease. Continue

CEREC crowns have become a popular choice among individuals looking to repair or restore teeth that have become damaged or decayed. As a local dentist, we understand how uncomfortable it can be to smile when one does not like his or her teeth due to unsightly gaps, dark stains, or problems with their shape. When you visit our cosmetic dentist office, we can discuss any issues that you have with your smile and create a plan for how to address it. This is the standard approach that most cosmetic dentists will take. What makes our Draper dental office different is that we use the CEREC technology to improve your smile in one visit. This means even the busiest of people can take the time to have their smile improved.

However, as a CEREC dentist, we complete the process differently. If you are seeking to improve the appearance of your teeth by straightening them, covering a dark stain, closing gaps or changing their size, we can do all of this in one day. The same is true if you have a damaged tooth in need of repair. We offer a one-day treatment without the need to wear a temporary restoration, made possible by the CEREC technology. If you need a dental restoration, have a dental emergency, or simply need to improve how your teeth look, visit our Draper dental office for an immediate solution.

Our CEREC system can be used to create crowns, veneers, inlays and onlays while you wait. At Draper Parkway Dental, we take digital images of the tooth and mouth and immediately upload them into the software. Using CAD/CAM technology, we create a computerized image of the tooth along with the exact dimensions and blueprint for what the new restoration needs to look like. The software processes the information quickly before making comprehensive recommendations for the restoration. The software accounts for every detail.

A common question dentists receive about CEREC crowns is whether they are as strong as traditional crowns. To answer this question, it is important to understand what CEREC crowns and traditional crowns are made of and which material is stronger. This article is a review of which restoration option is stronger.CEREC crowns are most notably

Instead of relying on metal brackets and wires to move teeth, ClearCorrect braces use a series of clear aligners to move teeth into place. The aligners are made of a clear and comfortable plastic that looks similar to a full retainer. By taking care of them and refraining from scratching their surface, aligners will remain clear and virtually invisible when worn. At Draper Parkway Dental, we can show you how to keep your aligners in perfect condition during the treatment process.

The aligners are created using an impression of your teeth and gums. Once received, the lab will create a series of aligners that start with the current position of your teeth and slowly move them until they are perfectly straight. A patient will wear each aligner for about four to six weeks. Afterward, the patient will replace the old aligner with the next one in the series. The aligners place pressure on specific teeth to gradually move the teeth for a more comfortable experience. By wearing all of the aligners in the series, your teeth will move from crooked to perfectly straight.

The aligners are given to you at the beginning of the procedure so that you do not have to visit our Draper dentist office every time that you need to switch them out. This allows you to spend less time in the dental chair than you would when wearing traditional metal braces.

Traditional metal braces are extremely effective for straightening teeth and treating misaligned jaws. While metal braces are more comfortable than they were in the past, they are still noticeable and unfavorable to many. With the wires, brackets, and rubber bands, traditional metal braces can negatively impact the way that a person looks and feels. Many people find that traditional braces are distracting and do not fit into a busy or professional lifestyle.

Simultaneously, metal braces are difficult to keep clean as food can become stuck between the brackets, requiring a special floss to remove the bits of food. At Draper Parkway Dental, we can help patients receive the necessary treatment without having to drastically change their diet or skip out on some of their favorite treats when wearing braces. While only temporary, this can be inconvenient and at times, frustrating. Given the tendency for food to become stuck, those wearing braces, also need to spend more time brushing and flossing throughout the day.

ClearCorrect is a far more convenient option than other methods for straightening one's teeth. Patients remove the aligners themselves when eating, so there are no restrictions on which foods you can eat. Patients also do not have to worry about something becoming stuck in the brackets or the embarrassment of feeling awkward while eating. Patients wear ClearCorrect for at least 22 hours per day, leaving plenty of time to enjoy a romantic dinner, business meeting, or lunch without metal braces ruining one's confidence. This makes it possible for patients to maintain their current lifestyle without any further restrictions.

There are many cosmetic dentistry options for you to choose from nowadays when you want to fix your smile. A smile is a social asset that makes people appear more sociable and attractive. Not being happy with the way your smile looks often leads to lower self-esteem and feeling self-conscious when interacting with others. That is

I really like and feel confident with Dr Rubisch and his staff. I go every 4 months to have Deanna, his hygienist, clean my teeth. She is the best I've ever seen! There have been some recent changes with the front desk staff, and this is the only negative I've had going there for over 10 years.

I've had about ten different dentists in my life (one nightmare guy practicing without a license, some good, some decent, one horrible). I've been seeing Dr. Rubisch for about 5-6 years now, iirc. I originally started seeing him because I had some bad work from another dentist that I needed to have completed. He did excellent work, and fixed the other dentist's problems. Dr. Rubisch clearly knows his stuff, he's reasonably-priced, and he's just a super nice guy. His staff is top-notch as well.. all extremely good at what they do, and friendly. Office is clean and happy. Great atmosphere. A+++!

Don has been my dentist/friend for many years now. He has worked on my teeth and all my children's teen I think. He even sees my grandchildren. He took me through a rough battle with all my teeth. I was born with soft tooth problems and spent all my young life trying to save them. I moved across the country several times, I always came back to Don because he was the best. When I lived in Chicago I had to see a local dentist for an emergency. He raved about the work that had been done in my mouth. He would not stop talking about how much time, effort, and skill were obvious when he looked in my mouth. He actually said that my fillings had not only been done right or correctly, but that they were done by a "Master" of the craft of dentistry. You will not find a more skilled and friendly dentist that can do soup to nuts.
