WellSense Health Planis a not-for-profit health maintenance organization founded in 1997 by Boston Medical Center. BMCHPs Massachusetts business serves 343,141 members across the state through several product lines that include MassHealth (Medicaid, which comprises CarePlus, accountable care organizations, and managed care organizations) and Qualified Health Plan. The Plan also offers a senior care options plan for individuals ages 65 and older who are also eligible for Medicaid, as well as coverage in New Hampshire through a highly-rated Medicaid plan that serves over 91,000 members throughout the state.

Because of its ongoing commitment to quality, WellSense Health Plans Medicaid HMO was rated 4 out of 5 by the National Committee for Quality Assurance Medicaid Health Insurance Plan ratings 2021. In addition, BMC HealthNet Plans Medicaid HMP and Qualified Health Plan programs have been awarded Accredited status from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), the highest accreditation level available at this time. Well Sense Health Plans Medicaid HMO has been awarded Accredited status by NCQA and is rated 3.5 out of 5 among Medicaid plans in the U.S. according to the NCQAs Medicaid Health Plan Ratings 2021.

Boston Medical Center is a founder of Boston HealthNet, a network affiliation of the medical center, Boston University School of Medicine, and 12 community health centers. Established in 1995, Boston HealthNet is an integrated health care delivery system whose partners provide outreach, prevention, primary care and specialty care, and dental services at sites located throughout Boston and in nearby communities.

Physicians at HealthNet locations provide a wide range of comprehensive health care services to adults and children, with a focus on disease prevention and health education. When you receive primary care at HealthNet sites, you have access to both individualized and culturally-sensitive care in your neighborhood and highly trained specialists and cutting-edge technology at BMC.

Boston Medical Center, Boston HealthNet community health centers, and the WellSense Health Plan are part of Boston Accountable Care Organization (BACO), which provides care to certain MassHealth patients.

Accountable care organizations (ACOs), of which BACO is one, are groups of doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers, who come together to give coordinated, high-quality care to their patients.

The goal of coordinated care is to ensure that patients, especially the chronically ill, get the right care at the right time, while avoiding unnecessary duplication of services and preventing medical errors. By helping your doctors and primary care providers to communicate more closely with your other health care providers, ACOs can deliver that meets your individual needs and preferences.

In addition to BACO, BMCHP has partnerships with three other provider organizations across Massachusetts to deliver health care services: Mercy Health Accountable Care, Southcoast Health Network, and Signature Healthcare Corporation.

Boston University Medical Group's Office of Equity, Vitality, and Inclusion, in partnership with Boston Medical Center, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston University School of Public Health, Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine, and Boston University Graduate Medical Sciences collaboratively developed the Glossary for Culture Transformation as a tool to align our goals of justice, equity, and belonging and strengthen our collective understanding. Establishing shared language is foundational to creating common understanding by expanding our awareness of the world beyond our individual identities and experiences.

Of the cohort of residents that joined BMC in July of 2020, 22 percent self-identify as underrepresented minorities (URM). With the national average of active URM residents in the US at 11.7 percent, the Graduate Medical Education department (GME) sees BMCHSs above average numbers as a direct result of intentional efforts across programs to increase diversity and inclusivity in recruitment.

BMC launched initiatives around data transparency and holistic interviewing processes to aid in addressing areas of unconscious bias that negatively affect URM trainee recruitment. A GME Diversity & Inclusion Council comprised of residents, fellows, and program directors was created to evaluate trends and collect data to improve the learning environment. A GME Cohort Mentorship Program was also launched to provide cross-program guidance for URM trainees as they transition into their first year of residency at BMC. In addition, the established URM Steering Committee continues its ongoing activities to create further interpersonal and community engagement opportunities for residents of color.

The Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery Comprehensive trans-friendly services that provide a single point of contact for patient care needs. The Grayken Center for Addiction at Boston Medical Center is committed to providing equitable care to patients with substance use disorder. Grayken serves as a national resource for policymakers, clinician thought leaders, and advocates to bring evidence-based practice to our most vulnerable patients.

BMCs Interpreter Services department, one of the oldest and most extensive programs in the United States, is here to help patients with in-person interpretation in 13 languages and can facilitate communication in over 250 languages.
