With over 30 years of practice in Traverse City, I have been blessed to be able to share a journey to a beautiful and healthy smile with awesome individuals and families from Traverse City and northern Michigan.
After graduation from Traverse City Senior High School, I began my undergraduate work at Hillsdale College and completed at Michigan State University with a Bachelors of Science degree. I graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry with a Doctor of Dental Surgery as well as a Masters of Science degree in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
My education does not stop there. I participate in Continuing Education programs covering both General Dentistry and the specialty of Orthodontics. As an officer of the Resort District Dental Society, I have helped host dozens of Continuing Education events for our local dentists.
I am a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, Michigan Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association, and the Resort District Dental Society. I have acted as the President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, and New Dentist Liaison for the Resort District Dental Society over the past 15 years.
My husband Eric and I enjoy family time with our now grown kids, plus tennis, golf, hiking, and boating in Northern Michigan. We also enjoy supporting the community efforts of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Child and Family Services, Step Up Northern Michigan, and Community Outreach meals.
There have been so many advances in orthodontic treatment making it more convenient and accessible than ever before. With the introduction of Invisalign and other clear aligner therapies, more and more adults are finding that they can have the smile that they have always wanted or realign teeth that may have shifted over the years.
We no longer take impressions! We have a digital scanner that takes a 3D picture of the teeth and bite. We use our in house 3D printers to make models of the teeth. The precision is amazing. We can make adjustments to teeth using computer aided technology giving us the flexibility to make aligners in our office or use industry leaders like Invisalign or 3M Clarity Clear Aligners to help construct beautiful smiles.

We have used Dr. Bergsma as a family for around 2 decades, with 3 patients receiving care thus far. The office staff are kind, professional and easy to work with. She fixed the teeth of two family members (beautifully) and turned me away for orthodontic services because she felt my problems would autocorrect, which they did. She offered an affordable, interest free payment plan and sends email reminders for appointments and payments. I encourage you to consider this office for orthodontic needs, should they arise.

My daughter had an orthodontic emergency while we were on vacation and Dr. Bergsma and her staff were so gracious to fit us in same-day and give excellent counsel to fix the issue. Dr. Bergsma was gentle and kind to my hesitant daughter, explaining everything along the way so she wouldn't be nervous. Grateful for their willingness to help out-of-towners!!

With three kids having orthodontic interventions, we have spent lots of time at Dr. Bergsma's office. The staff is welcoming and friendly, extremely knowledgeable and helpful in all areas. Dr. Bergsma's soft spoken nature and ease helps the kids feel safe with the unknown. The office is conveniently located. During pandemic times, all protocols in place made us feel confident we were as safe as can be. We are extremely happy with the treatment received and would highly recommend Dr. Bergsma.

So I am not a client of Dr. Sara, but I am SO grateful for her and her staff! I started my orthodontic journey in another city and once I moved to TC it's been hard for me to get back to my old doctor. I recently had a protruding wire and couldn't make it back to Petoskey due to work. They tried to talk me through the problem over the phone, but when I couldn't fix it myself Dr. Sara and her team took me in off the street and fixed it for me! I highly recommend them for their kindness.

The office is always neat and clean, appointments are on time; even if you get mixed up and come on the wrong day, staff are always professional, knowledgeable and pleasant.
