Dr. Hoverstad then attended the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry where he quickly became involved with the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department. Attending morning rounds, resident lectures, and assisting surgical procedures in the operating room as a dental student developed a knowledge base and desire to pursue residency training. Using his vacation time between semesters, Dr. Hoverstad completed Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Externships at Tufts University, Boston University, Washington Hospital Center, Virginia Commonwealth University, and UNC Hospitals. Working with Dr. Raymond White and Dr. Carolyn Dicus, Dr. Hoverstad published his research, Second Molar Periodontal Status After Third Molar Removal which was awarded the DENTSPLY International Award. He graduated with Honors and pursued an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at Boston University.
Dr. Hoverstads surgical training was based out of the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine and Boston Medical Center. He also trained at the Boston VA Hospitals and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard-affiliated teaching hospital. His surgical training provided extensive experience in a broad range of Oral and Maxillofacial surgical procedures including dento-alveolar surgery (dental extractions), third molar removal, implant surgery, ambulatory anesthesia, medical management of medically compromised patients, bone, gingival, and sinus grafting, pre-prosthetic surgery (preparing the mouth for dentures), maxillofacial trauma, treatment of benign and malignant pathology, reconstruction of maxillofacial defects using local, regional, and distant flaps, treatment of TMJ disorders, and correction of dento-facial deformities (orthognathic surgery). He served as a Chief Resident during his final year of residency.
Dr. Hoverstad is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Board certification is achieved after successfully completing a rigorous written and oral peer evaluation process and requires that surgeons present and maintain appropriate professional credentials and demonstrate the requisite training, experience, and knowledge.
During dental school, Dr. Milewski was motivated and inspired by excellent surgeons treating complex problems and their ability to positively impact their patients lives. Throughout his time at dental school, he spent many of his holiday and spring vacations learning how to become part of a surgical team, completing externships at Washington Hospital Center, Virginia Common Wealth University, and UNC hospitals. During this time he was awarded the Hillenbrand-Lupton Award for Academic Achievement in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Milewski completed his training with a four-year surgical residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
His residency focused on the surgical treatment of dentofacial abnormalities, oral and maxillofacial pathology, facial trauma, anesthesia, and routine oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures. Dr. Milewski has extensive experience in a broad range of surgical procedures including extractions, third molar removal, implant surgery, sinus augmentation, and oral reconstruction. He frequently volunteers at UNC as an adjunct faculty member working with dental students in the oral surgery clinics.
Dr. Milewski is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and a member of numerous professional dental organizations. His surgical interests include dental implant surgery, extractions, bone grafting, and pathology. Dr. Milewski dedicates himself to advancements in the field by keeping up with the latest technology and practices through continuing education.
