I grew up in Sandy, Utah where I cultivated a love for camping, hiking, skiing and spending time with family and friends. I graduated from the University of Utah in 1998 with a degree in medical biology and an amazing girlfriend. Soon after, Melissa Mitchell agreed to become my wife, and accompanied me to Richmond, Virginia where I attended dental school, and she finished her biology degree at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Through my studies, I acquired a love for the art and science of dentistry that I now nurture every day by giving patients beautiful, healthy smiles. I constantly marvel at Mother Natures work, and when I restore teeth, I try to follow the laws of nature to replicate her genius.
I partner with extremely talented ceramists who shares my passion for cosmetic and rehabilitative dentistry, and a deep knowledge of the guiding principles of dental aesthetics. These qualities allow us to achieve beautiful, natural looking results.
Our staff is the best! We have an amazing team of highly trained and skilled professionals. They have all been hand-selected by Dr. Barnhisel because they share his passion for taking great care of patients.

I absolutely love Salt Lake Smile Design. Dr. Barnhisel is a true master of his craft and clearly loves what he does. He also happens to be one of the nicest people you'll ever meet! He was really gentle and made my visit painless! 10/10 would recommend!

My first dentist as an adult and 10/10 do NOT recommend. I had a little pain intermittently on my top back molar, they xrayed it, didn't see anything but said it MAY be a crack so they did a root canal! Instead of seeing how it felt over time and if it really started bothering me then go that route. The crown has bothered me more than my actual tooth ever did. As I've gotten older I've realized this surgery was completely unnecessary and monetary based on their end, quite shady. Also, the wife of the dentist does the billing and they hound you until it's paid starting immediately after it's completed. Unfortunately, their main concern is their bottom line instead of the wellness of your teeth and I'll forever regret going there and letting them do their unnecessary work.

Dr Barnhisel and his staff are friendly and happy. Every visit has been a pleasant experience. Last week, he filled three cavities for my son so quickly that he asked "Is that it?" Great experience! I feel comfortable and safe bringing my children to see him as they age up from the pediatric dentist.

I am 45 years old, lived in 3 countries and hands down never been to a dentist like Dr Barnhisel. I have been seeing him for over a year now and had some pretty extensive work done and he is excellent, I finally don't mind going to the dentist.

I moved to Utah about 11 years ago, and needed to find a good Dentist w/ an accessible office for someone like me who uses a power wheelchair. I was also looking for someone who was aware and accommodating of my needs. My friend found Dr. Barnhisel's accessible office fairly close to where I live, and I've been very happy w/ their service ever since. I can now roll in and navigate my power chair to one of the rear, bigger offices, where I can stay in my power chair and recline to my usual Hygienists' and my comfort level. Ali then cleans my teeth, takes x-rays, and performs any other procedure I may need. Then, Dr. B comes in and briefly looks at the work that has been done and gives his approval. He has performs minor procedures on me in the past w/ very little pain or discomfort. The staff of Hygienists along w/ Dr. B, are always very pleasant and are never in a hurry; they take their time working on me, while giving me little breaks here and there. I feel fortunate to have found such good people who take such good care of me.
