Dr. Averill received his dental degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. He trained as a general dental resident at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Hospital. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Odontology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.

Dr. Averill has lectured nationally on topics in forensic odontology and has published in this arena as well. He publishes a blog dedicated to the reversal of wrongful convictions of persons imprisoned on faulty bitemark evidence.
