SUNY Upstate is an upper-division transfer and graduate college specializing in health care careers. Students applying to our bachelors programs take the prerequisite courses (minimum 60 semester hours) at another college and then complete their junior and senior years of the bachelors degree at Upstate for their program of study. Students in our graduate program enter having completed a bachelors degree prior to enrollment.

With the exception of the College of Graduate Studies, a criminal background check is required for all accepted students entering SUNY Upstate Medical University, at the expense of the student. The criminal background check is not a factor considered by the Admissions Committee and is initiated only after an official acceptance has been made. If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please contact the Office of Student Admissions at 315-464-4570 or email admiss@upstate.edu.

Upstate University Hospital relies on the gifts of many to provide the best care possible to our patients. Those gifts come in the form of both time and treasure. Your gift can help support our mission.

Volunteers at University Hospital may be students, professionals, or retirees. The most important credential is a desire to be of service and a willingness to accept an assignment based on the hospital's needs.

Created in 1976, The Foundation for Upstate Medical University supports Upstate's three-fold mission of patient care, education and research. The Foundation manages over 600 funds, including annual campaigns for Upstate University Hospital and Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital, and the Campaign for Upstate's New Cancer Center.

A unique opportunity to make a lasting and valuable contribution to the education of health professionals. Through SUNY Upstate Medical University's Anatomical Gift Program, you can provide the foundation of knowledge for future physicians and health professionals.

Upstate Medical University's educational mission is anchored by its four collegesMedicine, Nursing, Health Professions and Graduate Studies (biomedical sciences). Since 2006, student enrollment has grown by 30% as Upstate responds to the needs of the region.

As a biomedical research enterprise, Upstate focuses on the most prevalent human diseases, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, nervous system disorders, vision, and infectious diseases. The quest for treatments and cures is built upon expertise in structural, molecular and systems biology. Upstate also offers many clinical trials for patients.

The Upstate University Health System serves 1.8 million people, often the most seriously ill and injured, and includes Upstate University Hospital; Upstate University Hospital at Community Campus; Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital, and numerous satellite sites.

Stretching north to Canada and south to the Pennsylvania, Upstate's sphere of influence can be felt across a wide swath of New York. Education programs in various locations across the state help train medical professionals in their home communities. Clinical care, too, is spread far and wide, with physicians using telemedicine to help cover medical specialist shortages in rural communities. And the Upstate Poison Center, from its hub in Syracuse, provides poison information and support for millions of New Yorkers.

Upstate has moved ahead in key areas of its operation. The acquisition of Community General Hospital, the transformation of a downtown high-rise into student apartments, the addition of research space in the Institute of Human Performance and the opening of the Neurosciences Research Building, the construction of a biotech accelerator, and the Upstate Cancer Center are key attributes for the campus's mission-based growth.

Upstate employees benefit hundreds of local community service agencies through their support of the Community Giving Campaign. Upstate is noted as one of the area's most generous employers when it comes community support. In addition, Upstate's dedicated team of volunteers, Team Upstate, spearheads the university's response to numerous charity events, including Vera House, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and others.
