February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

The staff is completely amazing. My 1st appt at Mortensen and 1st time to a dentist in over 7 years, with bad teeth/gums and lots of anxiety. From scheduling the appt, to x-rays to the hygeinest to the Dentist everyone was very calm, very friendly and super professional. Walked away with a game plan tailored to my needs and anxiety. 100% recommend.

Had an emergency and made an appointment and was told that the teeth would be pulled. Arrive and I am told that they will do a work up and a plan to fix my teeth but would not help me today. All mortenson is concerned is billing the insurance company taking their money and yours. I will never return there again or recommend them to anyone. Actually I gave them one star and I had too

The customer service line doesn't know what they are doing. They have no idea who you are or what is going on and can't get u the help/info you need. Call the office directly if u can.

I love my dental hygienist, Michelle and Dr. Rekha Rethiyamma!! Everyone in this office is very professional and pleasant. I've never had a bad experience at this location. Sometimes you have to drive out of your way for better treatment.

No matter who I see to clean my teeth, they are all educational, friendly, and time efficient. Front office staff is so generous and their customer service is on point, both on the phone and in office. The facility is clean. My kids enjoy going here too!

Cleaning by Christina was fantastic. My insurance covered cleanings twice a year for the past three years and now some bogus charge of $83. I will be checking into it

Everybody there is always nice and efficient. I never have to wait to be called back. They do a great job explaining everything. I just think all of the staff are fabulous. I just love Michelle!
