Originally opened in 1933 as a well-baby clinic, Whittier Street Health Center is a comprehensive and innovative health care and wellness center championing equitable access to high quality, cost-effective health care for diverse populations.

Whittier Street Health Center (WSHC) is a Joint Commission-accredited urban community health center providing primary and specialty health care, oral health, mental health and substance abuse counseling services, and social and outreach services to individuals from culturally and circumstantially diverse communities. Whittiers mission Statement is: To serve as a center of excellence that provides high quality, and accessible health care and social services that achieve health equity, social justice, and the economic well-being of our diverse populations. It is designated as a 330 (i) PHPC and a 330 (e) health center by HRSA.

Whittiers Vision Statement is:Become an exceptional community health provider that addresses health care inequities, closes gaps in life expectancy, and pursues social justice. WSHC offers primary medical care, oral and behavioral health care at two sites in Boston. Whittiers cultural competence earned its designation as one of only ten refugee health assessment sites contracted by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. WSHC has developed a set of initiatives which include chronic disease management, strategies to address health disparities such as comprehensive screening programs, supports for lifestyle change, and health education. Whittier has also developed social programs to address the economic inequities and social injustices in the communities served.

We invite you to visit us at our two locations: our new 78,900-square foot, Silver LEED-certified health care facility located at 1290 Tremont Av in Roxbury, and our Satellite Clinic at 276 Blue Hill Ave in Dorchester.

Whittier provides comprehensive care to meet the needs of the whole person. The services include primary care, specialty medical services, mental health, substance abuse counseling, eye care, oral health, infectious diseases, nutrition, wellness and fitness, and social services.

At both our main health center on 1290 Tremont Street and at our satellite clinic on 292 Blue Hill Ave, we tackle the root causes of health disparities through our holistic, whole-person approach to care. This includes over 40 clinical and social service programs, which recently grew to include a larger, permanent Food Pantry, a fully equipped 6,000 sq. ft. Fitness Center & Gym, a new Weight Management Clinic, and the expansion of our Mobile Health Van services.

Every day we see how education, income and environmental factorsfar more than genes or genderdetermine health outcomes. Socioeconomic status is health status for many of the individuals and families we serve. To address these inequities, Whittier has designed and implemented its Boston Health Equity Program (BHEP), a primary care delivery model that combines care coordination, community outreach and wellness support.

Since youre here please browse through our website and see what we have to offer. We also invite you to come in and visit our full service medical facilities located in the heart of the city, convenient by both car and public transportation. We believe that after visiting our state-of-the art facility on 1290 Tremont Street or 278 Blue Hill Ave, and speaking with our competent, caring staff, that you will want to join us and become part of the Whittier family.

Whittier serves as a beacon of hope in the communities we serve! We are deeply committed to our mission to promote wellness and eliminate health disparities and look forward to serving you with the highest quality of care. Thank you for choosing Whittier as your partner in health and wellness!

Since its early days as a well-baby clinic in 1933, Whittier has served as a safety net for the physical wellbeing of Bostons low-income neighborhoods including Roxbury, Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, and the South End. Today we serve approximately 30,000 individuals from culturally and circumstantially diverse communities with a wide array of health programs. Whittiers services are designed to meet all of our patients primary care, behavioral health, dental care, and vision-related needs. As a trusted entity with a high degree of visibility, a strong advocacy role, a multicultural and multilingual staff, and long-standing collaborations across industry sectors, Whittier not only represents its community, it is a vital community asset.

In what are increasingly challenging times for the health care industry, our new model of care equips us with a pathway forward to successfully eliminate the health disparities associated with race, ethnicity, environment and income. By focusing more resources on major determinants of health that are not typically compensated by insurance: care coordination and patient navigation; community outreach and, education; and expanded screening we can achieve healthier communities and reduce health care costs associated with avoidable illnesses, emergency room visits, and hospitalizations. We will continue to advocate for public funding policies that support our model of care and encourage its expansion.
