Teach your kids the importance of brushing and flossing regularly, and be sure to help them learn the proper techniques. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste, making sure that your child doesnt swallow the toothpaste. Be sure to show them how to reach all of their teeth, including the molars; and brushing the tongue is also fun and healthy.
Ensure that your child eats a balanced diet and avoids an excess of sugary foods and drinks. Foods that are high in sugar like cookies and cakes, sticky food, candy, and sugary drinks specially sodas produce plaque acids that cause tooth decay. Nutritious foods like raw vegetables, fruits, water or milk, cheeses and yogurt also help your child develop strong, healthy teeth. Limit snacking in between meals in order to avoid the build-up of plaque acids that promote decay.
