Dr. Gilbert is a Clinical Associate Professor with the WVU School of Dentistry-Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department. He has held this position since 1981. Dr. Gilbert has been a State Examiner for the WV State Board Dental Anesthesia Subcommittee for the past 18 years and continues to stay active with this position.Dr. Gilbert is also past president of the WV Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and is a past president of the New River Dental Society. For over 12 years he held the office of West Virginia Delegate to the American Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS). At the national level, he recently completed a six-year term on the Commission on Professional Conduct and is well respected among his peers in the Southeast District III as well as from coast to coast.
Dr. Gilbert has published several scientific articles and has lectured to dental students, various dental organizations, civic groups and the general public. He currently maintains hospital staff privileges with several local and surrounding hospitals near his Summersville office location. He also has recently served on the Hospital Board of Summersville Regional Medical Center.
As a native West Virginian, Dr. Gilbert has family roots in Kanawha, Boone, Greenbrier and Nicholas Counties. He was raised in the Charleston/Kanawha Valley area and graduated 3rd in his class from Sissonville High School, just north of Charleston. WV.
Dr. Gilbert and his lovely wife, Shella, stay quite busy in their non-professional life with their blended family of five wonderful children, ranging in ages from 32 to 11. In his remaining spare time, Dr. Gilbert enjoys fishing, boating, and spending vacation time in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. His other interests at home include his Bassett hounds, Phoebe and Sophie, the cat Cleo, his loyal guard dog, Mable, and Koi Fish husbandry. As an avid WVU fan, Dr. Gilbert follows Mountaineer football and basketball passionately, rarely missing a game.
