Despite being uncomfortable, dry mouth alone is not a severe issue as long as it is not persistent. If it is, it can lead to various long-term health issues, ranging from irritating to dangerous. Someone who suffers from chronic dry mouth will likely experience mouth sores, splits at the corners of the mouth, cracked lips, increased plaque buildup & a greater risk of tooth decay & gum disease. You might even start to have nutrition issues, because the lack of saliva makes it more difficult to break down food when you eat.
Even if your dry mouth does not seem to be persistent, it is important to stay on top of treating it. The good news is that treatment is simple for most cases of dry mouth. First, make sure you stay hydrated by sipping on water throughout the day. For your dental & overall health, you should drink lots of water anyway! Dehydration, which dry mouth can be a sign of, is a serious health risk.
Other simple things you can do to treat dry mouth include chewing sugarless gum & limiting the salt, sugar & caffeinated drinks in your diet. Some people might recommend sucking on an ice cube or sugarless hard candy, but this can actually damage your teeth, so dont do it! You can also purchase nonprescription saliva substitutes over the counter to reduce your current issues.
If you use tobacco or drink alcohol, cut back on those or find a way to quit. Even if you dont think smoking or drinking is the root cause, those activities can irritate a dry mouth, so you should limit or stop them entirely. Plus, theyre just bad for you!
The best treatment for dry mouth always depends on the specific cause, so if home remedies or over-the-counter solutions dont prevent your dry mouth, it can indicate a more serious underlying health issue. In serious cases it is best to visit a physician or dentist who can work with you to figure out the root cause of your dry mouth & help you treat it.

Dr. Benjamin, the founder & owner of Marina Tooth Fairy Dental, is a board-certified Dentist from the state of California. After gaining her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of San Francisco, she received her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of California in San Francisco. Dr. Benjamin then joined a group practice at Glen Park Dental, where she dedicated three years to caring for families of the Glen Park community before moving to her private office in the Marina. She is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the National Dental Association, the San Francisco Dental Society, the Greater Bay Area Dental Society, the California Dental Association, the American Academy of Facial Esthetics & the American Dental Association. She has served on the Board of San Francisco Dental Society for over four years. She devotes a great deal of her time to keeping up with her profession through various seminars & classes, & encourages her staff as well to join her in these educational opportunities.
Because of the many hours Dr. Benjamin invests yearly in continuing her education, she is sought out & referred to by many of her dental colleagues. To date, she has accomplished all aspects of General Dentistry, including preventive, restorative & surgical techniques. She has performed thousands of procedures & rebuilt many mouths to full function. In this capacity, she has built a reputation of quality care, with a positive, caring attitude for her patients.
Through her years of training & experience, Dr. Benjamin has developed a theory of Comprehensive Dental Care. I have been a patient of Dr. Benjamin for over five years. She is knowledgable, patient, meticulous, and most importantly she listens. She listens to your needs, partners with you to find the best solutions, and does so with care and empathy. I fully trust Dr. Benjamin's recommendations and her dental work on me has been superb. She has also built a practice with friendly, understanding, and an attentive staff. No longer a resident of San Francisco, I so trust Dr. Benjamin that I recently came back to her practice from NYC to have additional dental work done by her. They worked with my schedule to ensure all of the work would be completed while I was there. If you seek professionalism, integrity, and HIGH quality primary dental care, then Marina Tooth Fairy is the place for you! I've been seeing Dr. Benjamin for 10+ years and, sadly, just had to switch dentists because I now reside in Hawaii. I've remained with her through all my different life and career moves, still flying to see her from the East Coast and the Midwest (she's THAT worth it!). I found her bedside manner to be very comforting and she also made sure to address any questions that I ever had. What I loved most is that she gave very sound advice and only offered intervention when necessary. I appreciated her conservative approach, but also valued her excellent skills when the time came. I definitely consider her to be one of the TOP dentists in the Bay Area (if not country!) and will miss her dearly. Thank you so much, Dr. Benjamin, for making sure I maintained a beautiful and healthy smile through all the years! You know I'll still come visit you when I can!

Dr. Benjamin and her dedicated staff have been taking care of my family's teeth for 12+ years. We have never had anything but a pleasant experience. They are always on time and accommodate my daughters and I all at once for regular check ups. Today, all 3 of us were in and out within the hour. When we initially established care here, we were told that the office had a lot of experience filing claims with Delta Dental. We received quotes prior to having work done, and were told the quotes "had been run by our insurance." Over a month later, we received a surprise bill in the mail, apparently due to a discrepancy between the expected reimbursement and the amount insurance actually paid. I understand that dental offices are allowed to collect this difference, but wish it had been made more clear that the quotes we signed were only estimates, and not a true agreement for the amount we would pay.

Exceptionally clean and safe environment. Incredible bed side manners with friendly staff makes one feel right at home. Their highly skilled staff take their time with proper education on how to maintain a healthy smile. The entire experience from checking in to check out is such a pleasant one. By far the best experience I have ever had at the dentist. I used to not look forward to my bi-annual appointments but I dont have the same feeling at Dr. Hibert's office. The office is clean, the staff is welcoming and extremely friendly. I highly recommend this place!
