Children's Dental Health Center was founded over twenty years ago by Drs. Steven Herschlag and Martin Cohen. The doctors' professional relationship began when they were clinical instructors at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. They shared a vision of pediatric dental care that was specific to the needs of each child, delivered in a friendly, relaxed setting. Dr. Cohen is now enjoying his retirement years and Dr. Herschlag no longer sees patients, but their philosophy continues to influence how we treat our patients.
Our staff are highly trained. We rely on the latest research to guide how we approach dental care for your children. We are rigorous in our infection control protocols and our office has the latest technology, materials and equipment for treatment planning and care.
Some of the staff have been with us since our early days. They have seen patients grow up, graduate from High School and College and return to our practice with their own young children. Some of our staff started here as patients themselves. It is because of this history that our practice feels warm and inviting.
We are committed to the communities we serve. We believe it is important to have a presence that extends our mission beyond the walls of our office. Our educational outreach to local preschools, our school-age dental health curriculum, our sponsorships of local sports teams and charitable organizations, all demonstrate our connection to the area. We consider ourselves lucky to be part of such a great community.
Our office was designed to welcome children and their families. Our airport themed waiting room, complete with an airplane play area, our'destination' treatment rooms,video game area, and televisions in the treatment rooms all help to reinforce our message that 'Children are Very Special People.'
Infection control in our office is a priority. To protect our patients and ourselves, we strictly maintain sterilization and cross contamination processes using standards recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).We continuously update our equipment and currently have the most advanced technology in digital x-rays, practice management and patient education. We want our patients to have state-of-the-artcare.

He sets the standard for our patient care, ensuring that the highest clinical standards are balanced with a warm, caring and supportive environment for all of our patients. As a specialist in Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Dereks academic and professional credentials are of the highest standards. Dr. Derek graduated from Kenyon College with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He received this dental degree from the University Of Buffalo School Of Dental Medicine and completed a fellowship in Pediatric Dentistry at ChildrensMedical Center
in Dallas. He attended Texas A & Ms Health Science Center/Baylor Collegeof Dentistry and earned a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and his Masters Degree in Oral Biology. Before joining Childrens Dental Health Center, Dr. Derek was the Dental Clinic Director at Childrens Medical Center of Dallas and Assistant Professor in Pediatric Dentistry at Baylor College of Dentistry.
Dr. Derek is involved with a variety of pediatric dental communities. He has the honor of being a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and has served as a Board Examiner. He is a member of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, where he serves on the Council for Membership as well as on the Board of the Massachusetts Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He is also a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Fraternity and has won numerous undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate awards.
Childrens Dental Health Center values Dr. Dereks extensive involvement in Pediatric Dentistry. His special interests and qualifications in sedation, laser dentistry, pediatric surgery, special needs dentistry, pulp therapy, and dental materials highlight his unique contribution to our practice; these qualifications help to set us apart in the care we provide to our patients.
Dr. Derek was born and raised in upstate New York and as such is a fan of the Yankees ;) He lives in Sudbury with his wife, three children, and three cats, Luke, Leia, and Buddy. He makes the long commute every day to be a part of our family here at CDHC. He is an avid tennis player, likes to restore and collect classic arcade and pinball machines, and loves to tinker around on home improvement project when time allows.
Dr. Veena Vaidyanathan is a pediatric dentist with a passion for helping children maintain healthy and happy smiles. Her dedication to pediatric patients and their families is remarkable; Dr. Veena is an invaluable member of our team.
Dr. Veena earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of the Pacific. She attended the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco where she received her Doctor of Dental Surgery. She completed her Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency with Lutheran Medical Center in Jackson, Michigan. Dr. Veena earned her Masters Degree from the University of Michigan, while completing a residency in Pediatric Dentistry.

Here at Childrens Dental Health Center, Dr. Veenas goal is for every child to have a wonderful dental experience from start to finish. She recognizes the individual needs of each child in her care and will apply individual-based behavioral and educational techniques to ensure the best experience for every child who visits our office.
Dr. Veena has recently moved to Boston and spends much of her free time enjoying the many opportunities and experiences of living in New England. She enjoys traveling, eating and watching a variety of sports. Her most recent trip included wine tasting in Chile and exploring glaciers and wildlife in Antartica.
Dr. Athanasiou is a specialist in orthodontics. His patients are always pleased with the superb quality of his orthodontic treatment. We see delighted parents and children at the end of their active orthodontic care. He earned his B.S. from Hofstra University, his RDH from SUNY Farmingdale and graduated summa cum laude from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Athanasiou furthered his specialization in orthodontics at Tufts earning a Certificate in Orthodontics. He is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Society and is the recipient of the Everett Shapiro Endowed Prize Fund in Orthodontics. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the
In addition, Dr. Tania has practiced dentistry and taught in various locations throughout the United States, and internationally, during her time with the US Air Force. We are fortunate that she moved back home to Boston to help raise her young, growing family.
The Dental Assistant and the Dental Hygienist play a key role in the care your child receives at our office. Children’s Dental Health Center is proud of our competent and caring clinical staff all of whom are longtime members of our team. Your children will come to know the familiar friendly faces of their hygienist and dental assistant. They will teach proper oral health habits, guide them through treatment, and watch them grow from tiny tots to young adults
Our Office Manager, Annie, oversees all the day to day operations of our team. Her commitment to our patients, her willingness to go above and beyond to meet their needs and her constant review of our policies and procedures ensures that Childrens Dental Health Center provides personal care to every family we serve. Annie is assisted by Cyndi who is our primary financial coordinator. Cyndi is our liaison with dental insurance companies and she will work with your family to help resolve any questions or issues you might have regarding eligibility or coverage.
