During his time as a resident Dr. Abril was a clinical instructor of the Southern Illinois University. His experience goes beyond the classroom and extends to international venues. He practiced privately for two years in Bogot, Colombia where he holds a degree in general dentistry. He worked in a general dentistry practice in Northern Virginia for five years where he discovered his passion for periodontics and focused patient care.
During his periodontal training, Dr. Abril acquired clinical experience in all aspects of non-surgical and surgical periodontal procedures including scaling and root planing (deep cleanings), bone grafting around teeth and implants, plastic surgery for teeth with gum recession and for teeth with poor gum quality, as well as crown lengthening procedures. He is fully trained in dental implant surgery, a treatment that replaces missing teeth with state-of-the-art dental implants that look and function like natural teeth.
He has committed himself to improving the quality of peoples lives by treating the diseases that cause tooth loss and contribute to many overall health problems. He is also LANAP and LAPIP certified which consists of the use of a periodontal laser - PerioLase, to conservatively (no incisions, no stitches and better recovery) treat periodontal disease allowing significant improvements in the health of teeth and implants that were considered to have a poor-questionable prognosis in the beginning of the treatment.
Gum disease is also known as Periodontal disease. It is characterized by the chronic (persists over time) inflammation and infection of the supporting structures of the tooth causing gum irritation, bleeding gums, detachment of the gums form from the tooth, bad breath, bone loss and finally tooth loss. The good news is that treating gum disease in the early stages can help prevent tooth loss.
Gum disease starts when bacteria deposits located at or under the gum margin develop a local irritation and infection. This infection leads to inflammation of the gum tissue and posteriorly separation of the gum tissue from the tooth (pockets). If this separation continues then bone loss and tooth loss will occur. This is why is very important to treat gum disease as early as possible.
Periodontitis: It refers to bone loss and the loss of supporting structures of the tooth in additions to gum inflammation. Depending on its severity can be considered Mild, Moderate or Severe Periodontitis.
IS THERE ANY CURE FOR GUM DISEASE?Yes. The good news is that there is treatment for gum disease. If the gum disease is detected in an early stage of then a very conservative approach that may involve scaling and root planing commonly know as deep cleaning followed by frequent maintenance therapies may be more that enough. However, in some cases depending on the severity of the gum disease a gum surgery may be needed. The aim of periodontal surgery is to regenerate or reshape the bone architecture around natural tooth or implants.
A gum graft can be utilized to replace the gum tissue that has receded. This graft can be taken from another part of your mouth usually the palate (the roof of your mouth) or the tissue can come from the tissue bank.
Missing teeth for a long time, periodontal disease, trauma can lead to insufficient bone to place implants. Especial bone grafting techniques at the time of extraction or after the tooth has been extracted can be performed by Dr. Abril to preserve or rebuild the missing bone. This will increase the success for your implants while also can improve the function and the appearance of your new restoration.
The long-term success for the implant depends on the quantity and quality of the bone around the implant. In some cases, where placing implants in the posterior upper areas the bone may be limited in both quality and quantity mainly due to the position and the size of the maxillary sinus. In these cases procedures may need to be done prior to or at the same time of the implant surgery. With the use of minimally invasive bone grafting techniques, Dr. Abril can raise the sinus and create bone that will be the key for the long-term success of the upper posterior implants.
Your gums are also part of your smile. But sometimes having too much gum tissue can make your teeth to appear short. In fact, your teeth may have the right length. Dr. Abril can help you to create a harmonious smile with techniques that correct the excess of gum tissue or gummy smile in one tooth or multiple teeth in to expose a natural smile. Patients that desire to have dental veneers can also benefit from this cosmetic periodontal therapy to improve and achieved that harmonious smile.
Functional Crown Lengthening Perhaps, the amount of the gum tissue is right but the tooth is decayed, fracture below the gum line or it is too short to have a good restorative procedure like a crown or a bridge. In this situation, gum recontouring and sometimes bone remodeling is necessary to exposed part of the healthy tooth creating room for a good quality restoration.
