Dr. Starns has an up-to-date, but long-established, dental practice with an excellent reputation. He sees patients of all ages and, due to his advanced training, manages most patients needs, in-house. The office has its own dental lab, providing convenience and quick turn around on our dental prosthetic cases. He is a person of honesty and integrity and was the chairman of the honor counsel for his dental school. Dr. Starns prides himself on building ties with patients and the community, and considers his patients part of his extended family.

As a graduate of the University of Virginia (undergraduate and post-doctorate), Dr. Starns enjoys following U. Va. Athletics. Until recently, he coached youth soccer for the Soccer Organization of Charlottesville and Albemarle (SOCA). He is very active in his church and is a volunteer dentist for the Charlottesville Free Clinic, the Virginia Dental Associations Donated Dental Services Program, and the Mission for Mercy Project in Wise, Virginia.

He has lectured on the effects of periodontal disease on cardiovascular health at the University of Virginia, Department of Graduate Nursing. He has also been featured on the local news speaking on dental health related issues.

Hobbies include yard work, hiking, kayaking, reading, and doing much of his own lab work. His wife, Deborah, is a dental hygienist in the practice. His eldest daughter, Alexandra S. Wood, DDS, completed her training and joined the practice in June of 2015. He and his wife have three other daughters, all pursuing careers in public service.

Dr. Alexandra Wood was born and raised in Charlottesville, graduating from Western Albemarle High School in 2006. She then attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to pursue her interest in Marine Biology. During a semester abroad in Townsville, Australia, she decided to follow in her fathers footsteps and attend dental school. After graduating with distinction from UNCW, she attended the VCU School of Dentistry, graduating at the top of her class in 2015.

Dr. Wood lives in Ivy with her husband Trevor, her son Jack, their dog Beau, two cats Leona and Lolly and 11 chickens. A lover of animals and all things outdoors, she enjoys camping, hiking, running, scuba diving, organic gardening and spending time outside with her family and friends.

Dr. Wood serves the Charlottesville community by volunteering at the Charlottesville Free Dental Clinic, and provides dental care to underserved areas across Virginia through Mission of Mercy dental projects.

Sharon is proud to announce she has been a contributor to the administration of Dr. Starns' and Dr. Wood's practice since November 1, 1988. She finds joy in serving the generations of patients that come to our office, and looks forward to welcoming new faces. Her personal goal is to ensure a pleasant dental experience for you, your family members and friends. She is extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of dental administration and you will find her a warm, caring individual, that has your best interests at heart.

Deborah has enjoyed practicing dental hygiene since 1981. Deborah is blessed to be part of a dental team that is committed to delivering the highest quality care and compassion to our patients. She loves interacting with the wonderful patients and making your hygiene experience comfortable and pleasant. She will provide you with the care and knowledge that will help you prevent oral disease.

Originally from Bakersfield, CA, Samantha has been a dental assistant in Charlottesville, since 2008. She feels blessed to be part of such a great, tight-knit dental family at Starns and Wood. Seeing the wonderful patients is the best part of her day. One of her passions is traveling. Samantha would like to see as many places as she can in her life.

Our family has been seeing Dr. Starns for 18 years (and now we see Dr. Wood as well). Everyone involved in this practice is professional, warm, and very good at what they do. We have had some complicated dental issues, and they made sure we got connected with the right doctors. I highly recommend them.

We have been going to Dr. Starns for five years and have had excellent care. The initial exam is comprehensive. The ongoing cleaning and diagnostics are preventative and I recently had a crown put in that is comfortable. In short, a great Dentist and a very friendly staff.
