February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.

Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.

While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

I went to Dr. Moody while I was a student at BYU. His prices were reasonable which is why I chose him as a dentist. I had to get a root canal after a complication from a simple cavity that he had filled the previous day led to excruciating pain. Dr. Moody said this complication was highly uncommon. I referred my brother to see Dr. Moody. He also had to get a root canal after a cavity filling. After hearing my brother's experience, I opted to change dental practices.

They aren't even in Pleasant Grove. They are in Provo. Sold out to a big corp, if you thought they were bad before they are horrible now!

I have been going to Dr. Moody for years for all kinds of dental work. From cavities to fixing my veneers, he and his staff are absolutely AMAZING! I recently had an unpleasant experience with a pediatric dentist and decided to take my 3 year old to him for some cavities (not sure why I hadn't to begin with) I was very pleased with the way he interacted with my son. We ended up needing more work done than expected and Dr. Moody took the time to personally come out to the waiting room and talk to me in detail about what needed to be done to make sure I understood and was okay to proceed with treatment. I was very impressed and appreciative of that. I HIGHLY recommend him! He truly cares about you and your dental health.

My tooth really hurt so I had a root canal done here about a year and a half ago with a crown that I've gotten with a previous doctor. They were really nice, my dental hygienist was amazing! I think she could tell that dentists make me nervous so she stayed and talked with me for a very long time. However a year and a half later I went to a different doctor in Pleasant Grove and he explained to me that the crown needs to be replaced because once it's used for a root a canal (again, it was an old crown, but the root canal was fairly recent) it creates a risk factor of getting bacteria in it. I wish I could have known that when they did my root canal at the Provo Dental Care so I could keep in mind of the expense that's coming up. Also, at PDC I had 2 cavities that they found (however I didn't have insurance at the time and didn't get them filled). Well when I went to a different doctor (that my husband has been using his whole life) he couldn't find any cavities. I expressed my concern and he searched and searched and couldn't find anything. It was very odd that at PDC I had 2 cavities and at a doctor I had none. Cavities don't seal themselves. Anyway, these people are nice, fast and very efficient. They made me feel like I was the only patient they were going to have all day (but their office looked really busy) and took good care of me. However it's weird that I'm finding out different things from a different dentist a year and a half later.
