The training our periodontist has undergone makes him uniquely qualified to serve your specific needs. As a graduate of the University of Florida College of Dentistry for his Doctorate of Dental Medicine, Dr. van Aelst received advanced education in how to better maintain the health of your gums.
Additionally, Dr. van Aelst uses the most advanced equipment available in dentistry to provide dental implant and periodontal care. Modern yet proven dental technologies that better enhance and protect the health of your gums are utilized at our practice. Examples include dental lasers and microdentistry techniques to more precisely treat gum and teeth problems and provide you with the smile you desire and the ability to chew that you need.
Dr. Brian van Aelst moved to Florida in 1991 after receiving the Tartan Award for leadership from Alma College in Michigan. He then received his Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University, with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. After completing post-graduate course in medical sciences at the University of South Florida, he attended the University of Florida College of Dentistry. While studying at the University of Florida, Dr. van Aelst merited placement on the Deans list and received the Student Award from the Academy of Periodontology. After graduating with his Doctorate of Dental Medicine degree, he entered into a rigorous 3-year Periodontics program in Shands hospital in Gainesville, Florida. Dr. van Aelst completed training in all levels of sedation at the Veterans Administration hospital in Gainesville, Florida. He was then awarded a Certificate in Periodontics from the UF College of Dentistry. Through a research thesis, Dr. van Aelst earned his Masters Degree from the University of Florida. Finally, choosing to go beyond the mandatory educational requirements of the specialty of Periodontics, Dr. van Aelst earned the title of Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology on May 8, 2008.
Dr. van Aelst has been performing periodontal and dental implant surgery since 2004. His research on bone grafting in preparation for dental implant surgery was chosen for sponsorship by the largest dental implant company in the world, the Straumann dentalimplant system. His research at the University of Florida was based on a state of the art technique using dental proteins to initiate the reconstruction of jaw bones.
The prestigious Spear Tampa Study Club, which has hosted over a dozen of Tampa's leading dentists and dental specialists several times per year for advanced dental education programs, was founded in 2014 by none other than Dr. Brian van Aelst.
Dr. van Aelsts accomplishments have a single common focus: his patients. Dr. van Aelst provides his patients with the highest level of patient care available using the newest technologies if they are a beneficial addition to the foundation of his specialtys proven treatment protocols.
Outside of the office, Dr. van Aelst enjoys spending time with his family most of all. He and his family enjoy playing with their labrador retrievers, Scout and Callie. Dr. van Aelst enjoys golfing and and cheering for the local Tampa Bay sports teams. He is an avid exerciser and completed his first Tampa marathon in 2010 and Clearwater in 2015.

Professional, competent, courteous, kind, caring, accommodating are all appropriate descriptions of Dr. Brian and his team, who went above and beyond to provide treatment to my 95-year-old father who was experiencing a quite inconvenient dental issue. As a caregiver for an elderly parent, I have found many individuals express interest in helping but the follow through is inconsistent. Dr. Brian and his team are the "real deal"...they deserve the highest praise and then some!

Had a graft from my palate to an area that needed it. I was very nervous about the procedure. I wasted my energy worrying as it was painless and smooth. The recovery wasn't painless but it was easily tolerated (without pain meds). The follow-up and care instructions were excellent. Not looking to do it again but, if I need it, I'm going back here.

Dr. Van Aelst is excellent! I had a gum graft In September by Dr. van Aelst, the procedure went very smooth without any issues. The Dr. took great care in making you comfortable with no discomfort before during and after the procedure. Office staff was very kind and competent.

Dr. van Aelst performed a gum graft about a year ago. I am thankful that I was referred to his office. Him and his team were kind, warm and knowledgeable. I never felt rushed and him and his staff answered all of my questions and made me feel comfortable through the process. After the procedure he kept in contact with me in the event I needed anything. I appreciate their genuine concern for their patients. I highly recommend Dr. van Aelst.

My experience here by far has been better than any other physician's office I've stepped foot in. Aside from the professionalism, friendliness, and accommodations the office itself is truly inviting. I went to Dr. Van Aelst for Gum Contouring surgery and had the best experience from beginning to end, with extraordinary results. I cannot leave out the exceptional personal aftercare calls and texts from both the staff and Dr. himself days later. Dr. Van Aelst really exceeded all of my expectations and I'm forever a patient. Dr. van Aelst was a pleasure to work with. He and his team were professional, kind, and helpful! I was initially worried about the gum lift procedure, but he and his team made me feel so comfortable. I can hardly remember the procedure, and had minimal pain afterward. It was so painless, I sometimes forget I ever had the procedure done --until I look at my beautiful smile in the mirror! I found Dr. Van Aelst through a simple google Gum Contouring search. After having braces twice as an adult and still unsatisfied, I wanted a procedure that would finally make me feel happy about my smile. Dr. Van Aelst and his fantastic team were informative and attentive from my first consultation appointment to my last follow-up appointment. The Gum Contouring procedure was performed under sedation, so I woke up, and it was all over! I was sent home with pain medications and maintained a pain level of 2-3 throughout the healing process. What follows next are a few follow-up appointments to make sure the gums are healing properly, to discuss flossing, and of course, to answer any questions/concerns. I would rate this office more than five stars if I could. My procedure was a success, so I will continue to visit Dr. Van Aelst and his team for dental cleanings to maintain my smile!
