Roderick Rusty Dowden, originally from Plainfield, received his undergraduate degree from Ball State University and his dental degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1994. Among the many awards earned over the years, the one that stands out the most for him has been the Tillman Miller award. He has a special interest in Prosthodontics including implant care for his patients. He has taken several courses that allows the office to provide a higher level of care for his patients including things like same day crowns. He enjoys getting to know his patients and providing the most appropriate care needed.
In his spare time, he enjoys ultra-distance biking, attending Pacer games and reading. He has helped with several organizations including Habitat for Humanity, the MS Society and numerous mission trips to Central America. He met his wife of 30 years, Sheri, while she was also attending Ball State University for her teaching degree. He has been happy to help her raise their two children, Brianna, who has now graduated from Purdue and Connor, who is now attending Rose Hulman University. He and Sheri are now empty nesters with only their very loud beagle, Obi to keep them company.

I would NOT recommend Dowden Family Dentistry. I wish I had read their reviews prior to making an appointment. During my appointment, Dr. Dowden made a comment that I looked younger than my age which I felt to be inappropriate based on how he said it. Normally that would be a compliment. After my appointment, the front desk staff charged me a "disposal fee" that insurance would not cover. I inquired what it was for and I was told it was a fee because of COVID. (Up charging me- which it appears based on other Google reviews, they have done this to other people) I received another bill in the mail for the same charge about a month later. I had to call and tell them I already paid it. I decided I wanted to try a different dentist so I called and asked for my x rays. They had me fill out a release of information form. I asked them to release my information to myself, but they instead sent it directly to the other dentist. There was some confusion on which dentist they sent my records to, so I asked for a phone call from Dr. Dowden to clear the confusion up and to express my frustration with the experience I had with his office. Instead, I received an email from Kathy his office manager. Since I was not able to voice my frustration directly with the owner of the business, the next place would be a Google review. The entire experience was unprofessional from the start, and I would not recommend this clinic.

I first went to Dowden Family Dentistry late last year. They found a few issues and made some recommendations. Three months later the issues are MUCH better. Thank you for your attentive care!

Office staff is very friendly. Dr. Dowden is one of the best dentist I have ever been to. He is very gentle with his procedures. Dr. Dowden and staff are always educating for prevention (for example -How long and when to use mouthwash; how to brush; best products to use) which I think is wise. Kathy is so helpful and answers any questions I have as far as billing. I feel confident with this dentistry.

My family have been going to Dr. Dowden for 20 years. He did amazing work on 4 crowns, even sending me to the place that makes them to ensure a color match. Always helpful and friendly.

I have been very comfortable and have felt safe at Dowden Family Dentistry during the Coronavirus Pandemic. My entire family of four has had either cleanings or other dental procedures performed since June 1st. Dowden Family Dentistry has taken all the necessary precautions in dealing with the Coronavirus Pandemic. Actually, I believe they've gone above and beyond. Just to add, we've never had any insurance issues. With our previous dentist, we always had insurance issues. And lastly, I recently had a dental emergency. I called in the evening around 7:30 pm and received a return call at 9:00 pm and was seen the next day at 8:30 am.

Office staff are nice and tenitive and only because they want to get in your pocket for more money. They send extra bills when the bill you have are already paid. I don't recommend this place unless you have money to just throw away which i don't have..

Hygienists and office staff were courteous and professional. Dr. Dowden is not good. He did not provide my daughter Novocaine or any numbing agent before pulling out a somewhat loose but not loose enough tooth. She was in a lot of pain. He also ground down one of my husband's tooth that later resulted in a root canal. He also did a horrible job patch job on a filling for me. We left him a couple years ago, now go to a different dentist who said Dowden did a lot of unnecessary work. Stay away.
