After 40-plus years of dentistry, Ive come to realize that we dentists are more than tooth docs. By caring for patients and being there for them when they need us, we become their friends and, in some cases, part of their support system.

I value each patient and try to earn their trust by listening to their needs and their expectations. Learning who a person is, and how best to approach their treatment, is my goal. I enjoy the diversity of my days and, most of all, the people who I spend time with.

I attended the University of Pittsburgh, and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science. Dental school was at Temple School of Dentistry (now known as Kornberg School of Dentistry), where I received my Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1979.

Ive been practicing in South Williamsport for nearly four decades. Hard to imagine that; the time has passed so quickly! We consider our patients to be family and I often remark that I have thousands of kids. Over the years, we have cared for generations of families and I find that aspect of my career to be exceptionally rewarding.

Throughout my years of practice, I have actively sought out and enjoyed many hours of continuing education courses. Keeping up with new training and techniques, reviewing the latest research, and assessing the newest trends ensures I stay at the leading edge of developments.

I am a member of the Spear Study Club, as well as the American and Pennsylvania Dental Associations, and enjoy learning anything new. Our patients are very aware of our commitment to modern comprehensive dentistry, often remarking on updates and changes to the practice.

I love Pittsburgh sports, especially Penguins ice hockey. Our patients know this, so during the season hockey is often a subject of conversation. Im also a model train enthusiast, closet accordion player, lover of lacrosse, and Lego model builder. My wife Cindy and I enjoy hiking the regions easier trails, and visiting the many Frank Lloyd Wright sites around the country.

One of the most challenging aspects of dentistry and, I think, the most rewarding is learning what a person needs and wants from their dental care. Ultimately, modern dentistry should be tailored to a patients individual needs.

I grew up around dentistry: Dr. Doug Calem is my father and I spent a lot of time helping around the office when I was younger. Seeing how happy my father was with his profession, and seeing how he helped others and their appreciation and happiness in return, appealed to me.

I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine with my Doctorate of Dental Medicine. Following dental school, I chose to undertake a general practice residency at the Wilkes-Barre VAMedical Center.

One of the most exciting aspects of dentistry is how it is a constantly improving practice. I like learning new techniques and incorporating the most up-to-date methods and technology into patient care.

Throughout the year, I participate in numerous continuing education activities, including on-campus classes and courses online through Spear Education. As a member of the American and Pennsylvania Dental Associations, I have access to meetings, lectures, seminars, and multiple oral healthcare journals.

I was born and raised in Lewisburg, and now live in Williamsport with my wife. Emily and I met in dental school, at Pitt Dental;she is an orthodontist. We share our home with a scardey cat, Max, who keeps us on our toes. As of late, Emily and I have been talking about getting a new puppy to add to our family, too.

When Emily and I arent taking care ofor creatingsmiles for our patients, we enjoy going to movies and dining at local restaurants, especially exploring new-to-us cuisines. We also treasure time with family and friends, cooking projects (baking and ice cream making are favorites), and hiking and bike riding. I collect vintage games, too, and love cheering on the Pittsburgh Penguins and Steelers.

As the Calem Family Dentistry office manager, I handle most everything thats not clinical. This includes office communications and patient referrals, as well as handling insurance matters, billing, and scheduling. I focus on keeping us organized and ready to provide smile-filled visits.

I assist our doctors with procedures:always attentive to our patients comfort and making sure the visit goes smoothly. I also take X-rays and digital scans, create temporary and provisional crowns, place restorations, and manage our inventory.

I have been part of Calem Family Dentistry since 1995 and feel privileged to work with fine doctors and exceptional staff. Building patient relationships, for me, is a great motivator: I enjoy the company of those we serve and appreciate their trust in us.

Outside the office, time with family is my priority. I have been married for more than 40 years and have a son, a daughter, and three granddaughters, as well as two dogs. I enjoy traveling, bird watching, photography, music, and knitting.

In 1998, I found my home at Calem Family Dentistry, having started in the field in 1996. I cant say enough about our doctors. Dr. Douglas Calem is an amazing dentist who has a great sense of humor and cares so much about our patients. Dr. Robert Calem is just as awesome. He is caring, gentle, and patient. And our staff? We think of each other as family and feel the same about those who come to us. I love seeing my long-time patients, catching up on whats new in their lives, and love meeting and getting to know new people, too.

I work with my patients to help them improve and maintain their oral health. I assess theirperiodontal and dental health, and offer preventive and maintenance care. A lot of my focus is on patient education: teaching people why it is important to take care of their oral health.

I became an RDH in 1983 and joined Calem Family Dentistry in 1986. The doctors and my coworkers are incredible people. We share the same objective: to provide quality care to our wonderful patient family.

In my off time, I enjoy biking and walking, and I am an avid photographer, too. I also volunteer for dental mission trips to the Dominican Republic, where we help people who have limited or no access to dental care.

My job is to assess our patients oral and periodontal health and note any concerns they may have. I also provide a range of preventive and maintenance care, as well as personalized education. In explaining how to take care of ones oral health, and why it is important, I ensure my patients are equipped for long-term healthy smiles.

I started working in the field in 2004 and was welcomed to Calem Family Dentistry in 2015. We have a tight-knit team that genuinely cares for one another and goes the extra mile for our patients. I love getting to know my patients and helping them to maintain their beautiful smiles!

I have been a team member of Calem Family Dentistry since 1999. Working with Dr. Calem and the staff is enjoyable. Although the day-to-day operation is fast-paced, we all pitch in to make things go smoothly. This allows us to develop wonderful, trusting relationships with our patients. I appreciate those connections most of all.

Time with family makes me happy. My husband Fred and I have been married for almost 50 years. We have three children, eight grandchildren, and a very spoiled yellow Labrador Retriever. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, working jigsaw puzzles, and taking leisurely walks.

I work in our clinic and operatories. I provide chairside assisting to Dr. Calem during dental procedures, making sure he has what he needs while supporting our patient. When needed, I assist our hygiene department, too.

My dental field career started in 1982 and I joined Calem Family Dentistry in 2013. Dr. Calem has created a great working atmosphere and everyone here is like family. We feel the same about our wonderful patients and do our best to provide them with effective and comfortable dentistry.

I live in Elimsport with my husband Lonny. We have been married for more than 35 years and have two adult children and one granddaughter. I enjoy traveling every chance I get, and love spending time with my family.

Our patients recognize the team dynamics and feel comfortable, secure, and confident in our abilities to treat them with care, respect, and kindness. We have over 100 years of combined knowledge in the profession, between the dentists, dental hygienists, and expanded function dental assistants.

Dr. Calem's office came highly recommended to me. I hadn't been to a dentist is a long time (7 years yikes!). They were kind and no judgement whatsoever. My daughter loves them too. She had quite a bit of issues and they are swift in scheduling, kind in delivery and couldn't say enough good things about them!

Customer service is horrible. I was hung up on twice and they never called me back on two occasions after telling me that they would. Their lack of concern left me in limbo for almost a week while being in severe pain and having an infection. I was pretty much ghosted by this office while being lead to believe that I was going to be scheduled.

30 years after I was trained to the IDEA of Dental care, my Heroic Dentist retired. My Doctor retired at the time. An old lady with rotten teeth becomes isolated. For every reason Dr Calam's staff are crucially gentle and kind to an old dental sinner.
