Dr. Richard Mullens is dedicated to continuing education and has over three decades of experience caring for patients. When it came time for him to find a trustworthy, highly-skilled dental partner who was just as dedicated to providing detail-oriented, custom-tailored dental care, it was a simple choice to select Dr. James Nguyen. A close colleague and faculty member at the University of Florida introduced Dr. Nguyen to Dr. Mullens as one of the most outstanding students he had ever taught. Dr. Mullens has stated that he knew Dr. Nguyen was THE ONE during their first meeting. Dr. Nguyen graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture before completing dental school, and he has always had a fine eye for detail. Together, they form a perfect duo that provides exquisite, comprehensive dentistry and top-tier care for patients of all ages.

In his younger years, Dr. Mullens idolized his pediatric dentist, Dr. Charles Fain, in Daytona Beach, FL. He was a very caring man who also appeared to thoroughly enjoy his work, and that impression definitely stuck with Dr. Mullens as he reached adulthood. Becoming a dentist was a way for him to fuse his fascination with technology with a passion for serving others and all these years later, he stills feels confident he made the right choice for a lifelong career.

After attending Florida State University, Dr. Mullens pursued his Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also completed an Advanced General Dentistry Residency at the University of Florida College of Dentistry at Jacksonville. Beyond dental school and his residency, he has amassed 1500+ hours of continuing education so far! His main areas of focus have been in rehabilitative dentistry, bite disorders, esthetic dentistry, dental implant therapy, and team development/customer (patient) service. This includes completed continuums with the Dawson Center in St. Pete, Frank Spear, and The Piper Center. Other noted mentors are John Julian and Dr. Frank Collins, who was a legend at the University of Florida College of Dentistry!

Dr. Mullens is happily married to Sherrill, his amazing, accomplished wife and long-ago college sweetheart. They have two grown children named Jordan and Tucker who are graduates of Wake Forest University and off the family payroll! As for personal hobbies, he enjoys spending his spare time water-fishing, waterskiing, surfing, riding motorcycles, hiking, and traveling extensively in the National Park System.

Growing up in a family of dentists and physicians, Dr. Nguyen knew from an early age that he wanted to be a dentist. His mother worked as a dentist, and she helped him understand how artistry and oral healthcare made up two sides of the same coin! Today, he feels proud to help his patients solve problems, escape chronic pain, and finally feel confident about their smile again.

Dr. Nguyen received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture, then went on to achieve his Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Florida (Go Gators!), followed by a residency program with the University of Florida in Seminole. This process trained him to perform advanced procedures that involved cosmetic dentistry, root canals, dental implant placement, surgical tooth extractions, and bone grafting. Today, he is Courtesy Faculty at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. He has also completed the entire Dawson Academy Curriculum and is a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Some of his other advanced training includes TMJ/TMD education through the Piper Clinic and cosmetic/implant dentistry courses with Spear Education.

Dr. Nguyen is a first-generation immigrant; his parents came to America from Vietnam when the war ended. He followed in his moms footsteps to become a dentist, while his brother followed in their dads footsteps to work as an engineer. He also recently got married in 2020 to his lovely wife, Jacqi, who runs her own law firm. They share a beautiful home here in Jacksonville with their dog Piper and cat Barry.

When he isnt busy at the dental office, Dr. Nguyens biggest hobbies include mountain biking, practicing photography (he even has a dark room at home), woodworking, furniture making, archery, fishing, paddle boarding, and traveling.
