Crowns are cosmetic restorations which are generally used when a tooth is partially worn, broken, or decayed. Crowns are also an effective way to seal a tooth that has had a root canal or filling in the past, to prevent bacteria from reaching that tooth. The crown is bonded onto an existing tooth, and will cover the entire surface providing strength and an aesthetically pleasing look. Unlike a filling which is restored completely within the patients mouth, a crown is fabricated in a dental lab from your unique tooth impression. Once the crown is placed, the dentist does any sculpting necessary to insure your bite functions and feels normal.
A bridge does just that. It bridges the gap where one or more teeth are missing. The bridge is bonded to your natural teeth on either side of a missing tooth, and replaces that missing tooth with an artificial one that looks and feels natural. The success of a bridge is dependent on its foundation, so maintaining the health or your natural teeth and gums where the bridge is attached is important.
