Dr. S. Jeremy Tu was born and raised in Taiwan until 1983 when he moved to Long Beach, California. Before he moved to the U.S., he had earned a B.S. degree in Forestry from the University of Chinese Culture, Taipei. He also served 2 years in the Taiwanese Air Force as a Corporal.
He earned his DDS degree in 1994 from the University of Iowa and went on to earn a masters degree in Operative Dentistry, focusing on Cosmetic Dentistry, Research and Teaching from the University of Iowa in 1996. He then assumed a faculty position at the University of Illinois, Chicago, Department of Restorative Dentistry as an assistant professor till 2001.
He first met his wife at the Moody Church in 1998, Chicago, and got married in 2000. They moved back to Iowa in 2001 to join the River City Dental as an associate. One year later, Dr. Tu decided to open his own private practice in North Liberty, Iowa. He named his practice Design Dental, Inc.
Dr. Trish Schminkes passion for dentistry started 20 years ago when she landed a job working as a dental assistant while in college. She then practiced as a registered dental hygienist at Design Dental for 14 years prior to her acceptance to the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. After receiving her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, she was able to return to the patients and co-workers she dearly missed while attending dental school and has fulfilled her lifelong dream of serving others.
In order to provide ideal, comprehensive care for her patients, Trish has chosen to follow in the footsteps of her mentor, Dr. Tu, and is currently furthering her dental education at the post-graduate program, The Dawson Academy. Dr. Schminke was honored to accept a position as adjunct faculty at the College of Dentistry and can be found overseeing fourth year dental students in the Family Dentistry Clinic every Friday. Dr. Schminke is a member of the American Dental Association, the Iowa Dental Association and the American Academy of Facial Esthetics.
In her spare time Trish enjoys spending time with family and friends, practicing yoga, cooking, reading, and traveling. Trish has recently developed a passion for snowboarding and can often be found in Colorado hitting the slopes with her loved ones.

Hands down, the best dental experiences I've ever had were here. The staff is so kind and caring, and it's rare to find a place that genuinely cares about their clients. I had excruciating pain and needed a root canal ASAP, and they quickly found me the soonest date with a specialist that they could find which was like 4 days out. However, after I left, they cared enough to keep trying to find something sooner because they knew how much pain I was in. They ended up finding me an appointment with a specialist a couple of hours later, to have the root canal the next morning. Also, my doctor went somewhere else, so I now have Dr. Schminke and she is incredibly intelligent, kind, and professional. I've never liked going to the dentist but oddly enough I can't wait to go back because of the experience I had with her and the rest of the staff. I love this place; the staff and the doctors are absolutely amazing, I highly recommend!

I'm a patient of Dr. Schminke's. She has always given me great care. The staff is always very friendly, especially the hygienists who are very gentle and thorough. Unfortunately my family will need to find another dentist after my experience today. I noticed a Christian magazine with some pro-life headlines on the table in the waiting room. I figured a patient left it there (I thought: what kind of doctor, dentist or otherwise, would willingly put this out?). I asked the young woman at the reception desk if she knew they had a pro-life magazine. She seemed confused and said no. I showed it to her and told her I didn't think it was theirs. Then I was called back to my appointment. On my way out the door, I noticed the magazine back on the table. I grabbed it, took a closer look, and realized it was addressed to Dr. Tu. I asked to speak with Dr. Schminke to let her know I would no longer be able to support the business due to this. She was with a patient but the woman working reception offered to have me talk to Dr. Tu, which I appreciated. I asked him if he knew it was a pro-life magazine and he said yes. I informed him that his office would be losing my money because of this, especially considering the recent repeal of Roe v. Wade. He was unfazed by this as I assumed he would be. He let me know it was a "free country" and that he was making enough money that my lack of business would not affect him. I told him women will die because of the recent repeal and he should care about this as a doctor. He challenged me to offer data supporting this (does he not know what happens with an ectopic pregnancy?) then escorted me out. To be clear, he is entitled to his beliefs and can do what he wants at his business. However, I would expect more from a doctor, especially one with an all female staff. I'm not aiming to change anyone's mind. I'm posting this to inform his current and potential patients where their money goes and who it supports. It's very disappointing but a good reminder to be more conscious of who I give my business to.

This was the nicest dental visit I have ever had! The dental tech I had was so nice and friendly it made me feel very comfortable. I don't normally enjoy the dentist and who really does but Dr. Schminke was very good. I would highly recommend them to anyone I know and I already did on Facebook. I will be returning later this week for a cleaning and I hope I get the same dental tech. So I can get her name again and thank her for such a great experience.

I have always had a fear of dental exams; that's what happens when you have had a massive oral surgery at 16! I get the worst anxiety, they talked me through the plan, they listened to my wishes, and they were more than accommodating to my anxiety and made me feel comfortable. (It may not have been obvious, but it made me feel better!). Thanks for taking it slow!

The staff were all friendly and provided great service! Explained everything they were doing very well. They also called me right away to see if I could come in earlier than instead of scheduling out two appointments. It was wonderful! Highly recommend.

I have been going to Dr. Tu since 2008. I needed to have an upper denture at this time. Dr. Tu listened to me and my concerns and treated me with the utmost respect and kindness. I have never went anywhere else. Dr. Tu keeps up with the latest dental procedures. Dr. Tu and Beth have taken very good care of me each and every time I have been seen. The entire staff is so friendly and helpful. Covid protection is the first priority at this time and I feel very safe and protected in their care! I am now getting a new set of upper dentures and Dr. Tu has just completed more training about how to improve dentures. I am confident I will have a set of dentures that will look real and natural! Dr. Tu, Beth and the entire staff make it so welcoming and the service is top notch and I would never go any where else!!!

This place is beyond amazing! I have hated going to the dentist because it's always been so uncomfortable but with Design Dental it's the complete opposite their staff takes such good care of you and makes you feel like they've known you for years. I had a cavity filled and Dr. Schminke & Avery did such a wonderful job! They truly care about their patients and I HIGHLY recommend going to Design Dental for all of you dental needs.

I have been a client of Design Dental for about 5 years now. After moving to U.S. i thought it would be difficult for me to find good dentist, but after the first visit i knew I was gonna come back. I have my regular teeth cleaning done here and now Dr. Tu and Beth are working on putting four(!) crowns on. This is the first time I'm getting crowns put on and I cannot be happier with the results! Staff is highly professional, responsive to any needs and at the same time personal enough with you to make the entire visit less stressful. Design Dental also responded quick to COVID-19 pandemic, making appropriate adjustments to the way office operates. You can make sure your safety is taken seriously. I also want to note how quick the computer system is that's running the whole thing. You can be sure your X-rays will be almost instant and you will receive appointment reminders the second you set one up. One thing I could recommend is developing a smartphone app and implementing it into the existing system, that could make scheduling, payments and reminders much easier.
