Dr. Rainer Bergmann, while a youth in his native Germany, chose dentistry for his profession as a way to combine his passion to help people with his love of both science and the arts. Thus, after earning his dental degree magna cum laude at the Free University of Berlin in 1978, he fully trained in two dental specialties at the University of Pennsylvania. These were prosthodontics (the technology of restoring natural teeth and replacing missing teeth) and periodontics (the technology of treating the gum and other structures surrounding the teeth,and placing dental implants). Dr. Bergmann decided to focus his career on prosthodontics and has been practicing in this field for over 30 years.

Dr. Bergmann met Dr. Carolyn Izu at the University of Pennsylvania while she was studying for her dental degree. They were married and eventually settled in Palm Desert, where they have been providing state-of-the-art dentistry since 1985.

Dr. Bergmann attended the Free University of Berlin School of Dentistry in his native Germany, where he earned his dentist degree (Dr. med. dent.) magna cum laude in 1978. At the University of Pennsylvania, he was accepted to the combined dual specialty program that was offered to only two dentists a year. He subsequently earned his periodontics specialist degree, his prosthodontics specialist degreeand his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. He received extensive advanced training in how to treat gum disease to save teeth and deliver fixed, optimally aesthetic and functional restorations with a stable bite. This was the perfect foundation for implant treatment where the design of an optimal bite is key to long-term success. Dr. Bergmann completed an advanced, multiyear residency program in order to receive his two specialist degrees.

During his formal education in dentistry and advanced dental specialties, Dr. Bergmann alsoserved as a clinical instructor in the schools of dentistry at both the Free University of Berlin and the University of Pennsylvania. He taught on numerous subjects, including dental anatomy, restorative procedures for broken-down or missing teeth, periodontics and prosthodontics.

Dr. Bergmann regularly lectures to his colleagues on advanced dental, periodontal and prosthodontic procedures and how to work with a microscope in prosthodontics. He has lectured repeatedly at professional societies, advanced training academies and continuing education classes for over 30 years. He has also written and published numerous technical articles, some of which have appeared in top professional publications such as Inside Dental Technology and the Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry.

Dr. Bergmann is well-recognized for his outstanding skills and achievements as a prosthodontic specialist and has been chosen by his peers to be included on several rosters of top dentists. He has appeared on the list of the Best Dentists in Americaand in the annual Best Dentists and Specialists section of Palm Springs Life magazine.

Dr. Bergmann is a member of numerous professional organizations and societies, including some that have very rigorous requirements for acceptance. Prominent among these is the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry.

The AAED is an invitation-only organization that is limited to only 110 fellows, top practitioners from around the world. Members and designated guests are taught the latest advancements in cosmetic procedures at annual conventions. Dr. Bergmann has attended over 25 annual meetingsand has served as a lecturer at several of them.

Dr. Carolyn Izu, a native of Indio, decided to enter the health carefield while a student at Indio High School. She decided to become a dentist after she saw the results that could be achieved in improving patients health, looks and confidence. She also saw dentistry as a way to take her artistic talent and make it a valuable tool in how she helped someone.

It was at the University of Pennsylvania that she met Dr. Rainer Bergmann, who was training in the dental specialist fields of prosthodontics and periodontics. They married and eventually settled in the Coachella Valley.

Dr. Izu has maintained an aggressive schedule of continuing education since she first began practice. In addition to regular continuing education courses in general dentistry, she has accompanied Dr. Bergmann for more than two decades to annual specialty training conventions of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistryand the Pacific Coast Society for Prosthodontics. She therefore has a special insight and understanding in aesthetic and restorative procedures, as shetrains on new developments in prosthodontics (the science and art of designing and making dental restorations). Prior to any cosmetic treatment, our doctors will make sure your teeth are healthy so you have a solid foundation for long-lasting cosmetic results. You will be informed of any dental health issue needing to be addressed as part of your smile makeover plan.

Yourdoctor will take photos of your smile and then take impressions of your teeth. From the impressions, a study model of your teeth and bite will be made. From your X-rays and study model, he or she will design your new smile.

If the changes to your smile are going to be extensive, yourdoctor can have a wax model made of your new smile as it will look after all procedures are completed. You will be able to preview and approve the proposed changes to make sure you are completely happy with them before starting your treatment.

If you are receiving crowns, veneers or a bridge, yourdoctor will prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of tooth structure to make room for your restorations. We will then take an impression of your prepared teeth that will be sent to ourlab.

Your doctor will place temporary restorations for you towear while your final restorations are being crafted. All our extensive temporary restorations are lab-made and will resemble your final restorations, so that you can already get a good idea of what your new smile will look like.Our patients tell us that their friends cant believe that these are temporary restorations, mistaking them for final restorations.

Your doctor will consult with you and make notes of any adjustments that need to be made so that you will be completely happy with how your final restorations will fit and look in your smile. Once your permanent restorations have arrived at our office, yourdoctor will try them out on your teeth with a gel that will temporarily hold them in place. Dental Bonding is a tooth-colored resin that is used to make minor cosmetic changes to your teeth. It can be used to fix chips, fill in a cavity, change the shape of your teeth or close gaps between teeth. It can even be used to give your teeth a new coating free of blemishes or discoloration. It is a faster and more economical solution than porcelain veneers but is less stain-resistant and chip-resistant.

A dental implant is a titanium post inserted into the jaw to function as a replacement root for a missing tooth. Dental implants are the strongest, most lifelike and longest-lasting tooth replacement option, and are considered the modern solution for missing teeth. With dental implants you can have replacement teeth that look and function just like natural teeth.

Although our doctors will generally recommend dental implants for eligible candidates, a traditional dental bridge is an option for replacing a missing tooth in cases where dental implants are not feasible. Our bridges are strong and very aesthetic.They are made to be well-fitting and to align perfectly with the rest of your bite.

We make custom trays for you to whiten your teeth at home. Our bleaching trays are made in such a way that you can apply the bleaching gel to your natural teeth only and not onto crowns or veneers. We use Opalescence bleaching gel and offer severaldifferent strengths.

If you have an uneven gumline, excess gum tissue can be removed to make your smile look more symmetrical or less gummy. Also, gum grafting can be performedto replace anygum tissue that has been lost and may be affecting your appearance. Our doctors refer these procedures to a competent specialist who will perform these parts of your smile makeover as part of your overall treatment plan.
