DeSalvo Dental is a Englewood based family dentist practice that treats patients of all ages. We are committed to delivering the highest quality dental care and do so using advanced dental equipment. In addition, the practice uses digital x-rays, which provide less radiation and more comfort to the patient. She provides pain-free laser dentistry with a state-of-the-art BIOLASE laser system. Dr. DeSalvo also believes that every patient should be routinely screened for oral cancer and has equipped the office with a non-invasive oral cancer screening system called VELscope.

Dr. DeSalvo is a graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, with subsequent training at Hackensack University Medical Center. She is a familiar figure in local school districts, where she often volunteers to convey the importance of daily preventive care.

Congenial, patient and supportive, the mother of three is especially adept at addressing the apprehensive patient and working with them to provide a positive dental experience. Being a mother, she also realizes the need for protection and safety among young athletes and provides custom sports mouth guards.

Dr. DeSalvo relishes both the challenge and satisfaction of improving a person's appearance through cosmetic dentistry. Her new facility provides patient entertainment from the reception area to the treatment room; relax and watch television while having any dental procedure, and use the massage and heat features provided on every dental chair.

Dr. Kei Lam graduated from Kalamazoo College in Michigan where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. She received both her Doctorate in Dental Medicine and Masters in Public Health from Harvard University in 1991. Upon graduation, she was given several awards including: Excellence in Undergraduate Periodontics from the Northeastern Society of Periodontists; Merit for Achievement from the American Academy of Oral Medicine; and the Law and Ethics in Dentistry Award from the National Society of Dental Practitioners. Dr. Lam received her Certificate in Periodontics from Columbia University where she received the Melvin L. Morris Periodontics Research Fund Award for Excellence. Dr. Lam served as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontics at Columbia University from 1993 to 1999. She was also a Clinical Instructor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY from 1993 to 2000. Dr. Lam is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Dental Association.

Dr. Hargaden graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1985 with a B.A. in biology. She graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1991. She completed her three year orthodontic training program at UMDNJ in 1994. She also received an M.S. in oral biology from the Graduate School of Biomedical Science at UMDNJ in 1994. In addition to her orthodontic training, she completed the two year course in TMJ diagnosis and treatment at UMDNJ. Honors include: Omicron Kappa Upsilon Valedictorian Award; NJ Top Dentists; Alpha Omega Fraternity award for highest G.P.A.; Publishers IEA award presented for outstanding achievement by a senior dental student; American Association of Orthodontics award; Oral Pathology award; Proctor and Gamble Periodontics Award; American Association of Women Dentists Award.

Dr. Johan The' has worked with Dr. DeSalvo for 20 years. His gentle nature, caring demeanor and attention to detail, make our patients feel relaxed and confident. He is meticulous in his work and believes in both patient comfort and patient education. He earned a dental degree from the University of Amsterdam. He received an endodontic certificate from Forsyth Dental Center.

Peggy Ty graduated from Bergen Community College in 2001 with an Associates Degree in Applied Science. She has been working in the dental field with Dr. DeSalvo for 21 years/ 12 years as a registered dental hygienist. Peg is experienced in many aspects of dentistry including periodontics, pediatrics, oral surgery and orthodontics. She is dedicated to patient education and specialized individual care. Peggy's commitment to dentistry is evident through her work. She is conscientious, compassionate and strives to make every patient comfortable. Peg is sweet, pleasant and an excellent hygienist. She is certified in CPR/BLS training, and trained in ZOOM bleaching. She keeps up with new advancements in dental hygiene to provide the best quality dental care to all our patients.

Armine and Dr. DeSalvo have worked together for over 10 years. She is a certified x-ray technician. Armine has a bright and bubbly personality that helps make patients of all ages feel at ease. She is smart, enthusiastic in her work and professional. Armines attention to quality makes her an outstanding clinical coordinator. She is fluent in Armenian and Russian.

Nara is a wonderful addition to the team. She is warm and compassionate and strives to meet the needs of every patient. Her attention to detail helps the clinical area run smoothly every day. Nara is fluent in Armenian and Russian.

Lilliana has worked together with Dr. Hargaden, our orthodontist, for many years. She is extremely knowledgeable in the orthodontic field. She is pleasant, vibrant and works wonderfully with all our patients. She is fluent in Croatian.

Yukiko is experienced in many aspects of the dental field. She earned a college degree in applied psychology from Pace University. She is a certified dental assistant and x-ray technician. Yukiko is sweet and intelligent and will work to answer any insurance and financial questions. She is fluent in Chinese and Japanese.

Alex started working with Dr. DeSalvo when she first opened in 1994. She was both an assistant and front desk manager. She stayed with Dr. DeSalvo for many years before going back to school. She obtained a degree in Forensic Science from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Alex currently works full time in her profession but helps out part time at the front desk. She is a pleasure to be around and always an asset to the office.

Many people may try over the counter solutions like whitening trays or strips. These treatments work but not as well as professional solutions. As with most things, what you buy in the store is simply not as strong as what you can get from a medical professional. Additionally, store bought whitening trays are designed to fit everyone's teeth, not your teeth specifically. This means that they can become loose, and the solution can leak, leading to gum irritation.

In our dental office, we also recommend whitening trays. This type of procedure is effective and puts patients in control over how white their teeth become and how often they are whitened. We start by taking an impression of a patient's teeth. We then use this impression to create customized whitening trays in a dental lab. They fit securely around teeth and will not leak solution into the mouth. This is an ideal way for patients to whiten teeth because once they are created, they can be used at any time. Patients are provided with a whitening solution to use at home, and the trays need to be worn for a couple of hours every night for a week or more. Once teeth have reached the perfect shade of white, a patient can stop wearing the trays. This portable solution can be taken anywhere, making it possible for people to whiten teeth while on vacation, business trips or after moving to a new city.

When a whitening solution is applied to the teeth, the hydrogen peroxide inside of the solution penetrates through the enamel. It then starts the oxidation process where molecules are transformed to reflect less or no light. This makes them appear colorless, and teeth appear white. This process is typically extremely effective for eliminating stains and can be repeated frequently.

On occasion, the stains are too strong for a teeth bleaching procedure to work. When this happens, we can provide an alternative treatment. For example, patients in Englewood can have dental veneers placed on the surface of teeth in order to cover dark stains. This is often preferable for patients that smoke since veneers are stain resistant and won't yellow quickly like natural teeth. Most of the materials that are used in dental restorations or for cosmetic purposes are stain resistant and bleach resistant. For example, a dental crown won't stain or bleach but should maintain its initial coloring with time. When a crown, veneer, bridge, or implant is created in a dental lab, they are created to match the shade of the surrounding teeth. If the surrounding teeth are yellow, these restorations will be created in a yellow shade. If the surrounding teeth are a brilliant white, the restoration will be as well.
