Hi, Im Dr. Derek and I would like to welcome you to Busciglio Smiles. Having grown up in Brandon, I take great pride in creating gorgeous smiles for my friends and neighbors in the community. I am a board-certified orthodontist, and Ive been practicing for over 15 years.

I began learning the field from my father, Dr. John Busciglio, who was also a board-certified orthodontist and started the practice in 1972. Our training (both at Tufts University in Boston) and our time practicing together have made a huge difference in the quality and level of care Busciglio Smiles provides. Our orthodontic and pediatric care is second to none!

Our practice has been beautifying smiles in the local community for nearly 50 years, and we continue to grow and deliver orthodontic and pediatric dentistry care to the patients of Hillsborough County and beyond.

As an orthodontist dedicated to my craft, I am constantly striving to stay abreast of the latest technology through continuing education. Not only am I a Diamond+ Invisalign provider, I give lectures throughout the country teaching other orthodontists to provide above-and-beyond Invisalign treatment. Teaching others while simultaneously learning from their experiences has been an invaluable experience, which has allowed me to provide the best care possible to each and every patient that walks through my doors.

My wife, Katie, and I have one beautiful son named Rocco, and we adopt lots of pets! Currently, we have two dogsGordan (the grump) and Blondieand three catsPeanut, Lola, and Tella. When Im not at work, you can find me at dinner with my wife, on the tennis court, or playing with Rocco. I also enjoy supporting USF Bulls football. I played for the inaugural team back in 1997 and have very much enjoyed remaining involved with the evolution and growth of the program.

People ask me what else I would do if I couldnt do orthodontics any longer; the real answer is I havent a clue. I grew up idolizing my father and playing in his orthodontic office as a very young child. I began saying I wanted to be an orthodontist for as long as I can remember. This profession was destiny for me. Im so happy I was fortunate enough to make it my reality.

I learn something new, funny, or different every day. I am fortunate enough to cross paths in my practice with people from all over the world, and they have great stories to tell if you take the time to listen.

When we finish treatment, I always love to see the difference in the photos from start to finish. The final set of pictures always seems to have a smile a bit bigger and brighter than the initial set. That makes me smile, too.

At your first visit with Busciglio Smiles, a complimentary panoramic x-ray and a set of photos will be taken. These diagnostics provide the necessary information for Dr. Busciglio to assess your orthodontic needs and discuss treatment options. If you decide you would like to pursue treatment, a complete set of diagnostic records will be taken.

This typically includes photos of the patients face and teeth, panoramic and cephalometric x-rays, and study models. This information is used to develop a customized treatment plan for each individual patient. If necessary, these records may also be taken at intervals during treatment to assist in tracking progress as the teeth and jaws move.

The Invisalign System is a series of clear overlay templatescalled alignersthat have been generated by computer simulation to gradually move the teeth. This system is available to adult patients with certain orthodontic bite problems. Ask us if you are a candidate for the Invisalign system.

Ceramic braces are made of translucent (clear) material. They are most popular with adult patients, due to their cosmetic appeal. The only drawback to ceramic brackets is that they are more fragile, and the elastic ties can discolor between orthodontic visits.

Self-ligating braces utilize sliding-door technology known as self-ligation that allows the wire to slide back and forth within the bracket. No elastic or steel ties are used with these brackets. This technology creates less friction and results in greater comfort for the patient. In addition, self-ligating braces often reduce both treatment time and the number of adjustments that are usually performed.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children be seen by the age of seven to evaluate the need for orthodontic treatment. This may seem early, but at this age, Dr. Busciglio can identify and address many problems that if left untreated, may make later treatment far more difficult on both the child and the orthodontist. By the age of seven, most children will have the front four adult teeth on the upper and lower, as well as the first permanent molars erupted. With these teeth erupted, we can evaluate if there is adequate space for the other teeth to erupt.

In addition, we can evaluate the growth of the jaws to determine any bite discrepancy, check for crossbites, arch width, and dangerous protrusions of the front teeth. Often, an early phase of treatment to address one or more of these issues can reduce the likelihood for extractions of adult teeth, simplify later treatment, and improve the childs self-image during the formative years.

Discomfort with Orthodontic Treatment During the first week after your braces are in place and routine adjustments are complete, you will likely feel some pain, soreness or discomfort. You may take acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers while you adjust to your new braces. A warm wash cloth or heating pad may reduce the soreness in your jaws.

Upon arriving, each patient and parent will be seen by the staff and doctor who will acclimate you to our office and prepare for the initial exam. We will take the necessary photographs and X-rays to allow us to make a proper diagnosis. The doctor will then complete a brief, but thorough, exam.

Treatment time obviously depends on each patients specific orthodontic problem. In general, treatment times range from 12 to 30 months. The average time frame a person is in braces is approximately 22 months. We also offer Acceledent, an accelerated treatment option, which can shorten your time in treatment by up to 50%.

It is impossible to give an exact cost for treatment until we have examined you. We will cover the exact cost and financial options during the initial examination. Yes. We understand your busy schedule, and we are happy to help you make the most of your time. On some occasions, we may request to speak with a parent when they return, so we ask that parents check in with their patient manager before dropping off their child.

Generally, braces do not hurt. After certain visits, teeth may be sore for a few days. In these situations, pain medications such as Advil or Tylenol will ease the discomfort. However, after most visits, patients do not feel any soreness at all! We often remind our patients, It does not have to hurt to work!

Patients should brush their teeth at least four times each day after each meal and before going to bed. We will show each patient how to floss their teeth with braces and may also provide a prescription for a special fluoride, if necessary.

Phase One treatment, if necessary, is usually initiated on children between the ages of 7 and 10. Phase One treatment lasts about 12-21 months. The primary objective for Phase One treatment is to address significant problems to prevent them from becoming more severe and to improve self-esteem and self-image.

It is best to assume that your child will need full braces even after Phase One treatment. The period following Phase One treatment is called the resting period, during which growth and tooth eruption are closely monitored. Throughout this period, parents and patients will be kept informed of future treatment recommendations.

Teeth, and sometimes entire facial structures, are permanently changed by orthodontic treatment. It is important that the treatment be appropriate and properly completed. Orthodontic specialists have extensive and specialized training that enables them to provide their patients with professional, personalized treatments.
