Dr. Spencer Hornsteins father practiced dentistry in New York City while he was growing up. Dr. Hornstein appreciated oral health, as well as the science and art of dentistry, from a young age. In 1981 Dr. Hornstein graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. After graduating from Howard University Dental School in 1985, Dr. Hornstein completed a General Practice Residency at Sydenham NFCC/Harlem Hospital Center at Columbia University in New York City.
Dr. Hornstein is a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). Less than one percent of dentists achieve this honor, which requires meeting a stringent set of requirements outlined by the AGD. To obtain a mastership, Dr. Hornstein first had to become a Fellow, which requires three years of continuous AGD membership, 500 hours of continuing education (CE) credits, and passing a 400-question exam covering all disciplines of dentistry. Mastership in the AGD requires an additional 1,100 hours of CE, 400 of which must be hands-on courses and 600 of which should be in specific disciplines of dentistry. Dr. Hornstein was also required to present examples of certain cases completed in his office to colleagues who are Masters. Upon achieving Mastership, he was awarded a Governors Citation from the State of Maryland and a Declaration by the State Senate for achieving this prestigious title.
Well-known throughout the state of Maryland for his dedication to special needs dentistry, Dr. Hornstein is equipped to handle cases many dentists cant or wont. These cases range from patients with extreme dental fears to those who face physical, developmental, or psychological challenges. One of the only dentists in the Bethesda area to see special needs patients, Dr. Hornstein treats patients three and up, including seniors with Alzheimers disease. Dr. Hornsteins gentle and compassionate nature puts patients at ease, and over two decades of service has provided him with the skills and experience to intuitively know what each patient needs in order to feel comfortable and safe in his care.
He continues to expand his knowledge and skills by attending classes, seminars, and hands-on training events. He is also on the board of the Maryland foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped, which provides free dental care to mentally or physically challenged patients in the state of Maryland.
Vickie has been with Dr. Hornstein since 1991. She received her certification in Dental Assisting from Allegheny Community College. Vickies knowledge of dentistry is vast and her skills are excellent. Patients love her kindness and the ability she has to make you forget where you are. In her free time she enjoys her family, her garden, the STEELERS, and the Washington Nationals!
Jamilette Jami Vasquez, started working in a dental lab at the age of 18. She moved to a career in dental assisting. Jami joined the Dentistry of Bethesda family in 2020. She, loves challenging dental cases and making temporaries, She takes her time and make sure all temporaries are aesthetically pleasing to the patients. Jami has two daughters, Melanie and Ava, a dog and cat. In her spare time she enjoys travelling, spending time with friends and family and modelling in photo shoots.
Melissa is our Front Desk Manager. She has been in the dental field for over 15 years holding various positions. Melissa has a wealth of knowledge about dentistry and various dental insurance coverage and options.She works diligently to make sure all patients get their maximum benefit from their Dental Insurance. Melissa,attended The American University and has received her expanded functions dental assisting and X-ray certification from the Southern Maryland Dental Society. Melissa loves spending time with her sons and her grandson. She enjoys golfing, hiking, and the Washington Nationals.
Natthavee Golf Khamphong grew up in Thailand. Golf, graduated from Thammasat University in 2000 with a major in Social Work Administration. Arriving in 2001 to Bethesda she worked as an AuPair. In 2004 she graduated with a finance degree from Southeastern University. Golf joined Dentistry of Bethesda in 2019. She has spent 15 years in the dental field. Golf loves working with people to assist them any way she can. In her spare time she and her husband love food adventures,hiking and all sports.
Barbara has worked for the office since 1993. She started out as the front desk receptionist and currently takes care of many of the behind the scenes jobs. In her spare time she enjoys interior design and spending time with Dr. Hornstein and enjoys spending time with family and friends.

On my first visit to Dentistry of Bethesda, the hygienist Dee Dee impressed me with her attention to detail. Also impressive was the efficient and friendly front office. Because Dr. Hornstein felt it was important to meet with me to follow-up on the X-rays and photos taken, I was back the next day. I've had more dental work done than most people, and so I can say with certainty tha I never had a more thorough exam from a professional. Dr. Hornstein was with me for a full 45 minutes reviewing every issue he felt needed to be addressed - even though he knew the work would be done back in Florida rather than in his office. He sent all the images and his notes to my Florida dental practice. Now THAT and the time spent with me is impressive.

The staff were very friendly. My son has autism and Dr Hornstein was very respectful and patient. He spoke directly to him and waited for him to do things for himself. He was very thorough in gathering information and took the time required. We are going back for further care.

The staff is friendly and easy to work with. The office is state of the art in terms of equipment and and covid protection. Dr. Hornstein does a great job with my dental care but more importantly he understands my anxiety from past dentists. He and the staff do everything to make sure I am comfortable and not in pain. I highly recommend them!!!

The staff is highly competent and friendly, and their technology is very up to date. They have been extremely careful about protecting everyone from Covid. They don't push cosmetic procedures like some practices. I am confident that I am getting excellent dental care here.

Across the board I believe this is one of the premier dental offices in the Washington area. The entire staff from the front desk to the oral hygienist to Dr. Hornstein is patient oriented and highly professional. Due to special needs dental visits were becoming very difficult for a family member until we were referred to Dentistry of Bethesda. From the first visit on we were able to restart a serious dental program for our loved one with little difficulty. Under the leadership of Dr. Hornstein this office promotes patience, flexibility and understanding and is making a great contribution to good dental health. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

This was my first visit back to the office since Mach 2020 and I felt extremely comfortable and safe! The precautions that DOB have taken to ensure the safety of patients and staff is truly exceptional! Seriously, like they even have an external suction system on top of a room light and air purifier to help with keeping the room sanitized! The staff is amazing and Dr Hornstein is the best at providing outstanding care with compassion and patience. Now you may read this and say, "This is a little over the top!" But, that was how great my experience was today. I don't usually do google reviews, but felt the need to share my experience for those who may be looking for a excellent dental office. I hope this review helps with making your decision!

First visit with my husband. Staff was welcoming and friendly. We did not feel rushed and the doctor was patient and asked a few times if we had questions or concerns. We feel very comfortable and confident about returning for additional treatment.

My husband and I have been going to Dr. Hornstein for 10+ years. He has always taken wonderful care of us and made every procedure, be it a routine cleaning or root canal, easy and stress-free. His entire office staff is incredibly kind, attentive, and hyper diligent about Covid precautions and cleanliness. I feel very comfortable in their care and highly recommend!
