Dr. John Thousand, IV received his bachelors degree in molecular, cellular, and developmental Biology from the University of Colorado Boulder before attending the Anschutz Medical Campus, School of Dental Medicine for his graduate dental degree. As a student at the School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Thousand accelerated in surgical aspects of dentistry with a concentration in implantology. In his senior year, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry awarded him the Student Research Grant, which he used to study the effects of inflammation around implants.

Dr. Thousand completed his specialty training in periodontics at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine, where he received a masters degree in periodontology. As a resident, he researched the effects of bone grafting materials on the sinus floor topography, the variability in root volume as it relates to bone grafting, and the effect of various cementing techniques on residual cement around implant restorations.

After successful completion of his masters residency, Dr. Thousand was accepted into the Implantology Fellowship program, where he pursued additional research in bone grafting techniques and expanded his skill set in complex regenerative and prosthetic implant dentistry. During this time, he was awarded the John F. Prichard Graduate Research Award for his research on the changes in sinus floor topography after the extraction of teeth with or without bone grafting.

Dr. Thousand is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, Associate Dental Surgeon at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgical Dentistry at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine. He has lectured internationally on the topics of periodontal plastic surgery and implant dentistry with an emphasis on final aesthetic outcomes.

Dr. Thousands specialty practice includes the complete spectrum of periodontal therapies, including minimally invasive microsurgical approaches for the treatment of periodontal diseases, dental implants, bone grafting, gingival grafting, full-mouth rehabilitation with implant supported prosthetics, dental laser treatment, periodontal plastic surgery, IV sedation and a ton of cheesy dental humor.

Dr. Thousand and his wife, Jenni, moved to St. Augustine from Denver, CO, where they fell in love with the coastal lifestyle and the rich history of the area. Dr. Thousands interests in the outdoors have transferred his daily Colorado activities of rock climbing, hiking and snowboarding to Floridas wakeboarding, kite boarding, and surfing.

Dr. Michael Romani received his bachelors degree in human biology with a minor in chemistry from California State University in Fresno. Upon graduation, he was admitted to the Anschutz Medical Campus, School of Dental Medicine to begin his graduate dental degree. Early in his dental education, Dr. Romani and Dr. Thousand became great friends and worked on several research projects together, including topics that covered the effects of bone grafting on sinus pneumatization and techniques to reduce retained cement around implant-supported prostheses. Dr. Romani accelerated throughout his dental education, quickly showed an interest in surgical dentistry and committed to pursuing a career in periodontics.

Dr. Romani attended his three-year post-graduate training at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. During his residency, he received extensive training in IV sedation, surgical extractions, complex implant placement, regenerative surgical dentistry including bone, sinus, and soft tissue grafting, and the prevention and treatment of advanced periodontal disease. He served as the chief resident during his last year and completed research in the MUSC Pathology Laboratory on gingival cysts of the adult. During his three-year program, Dr. Romani volunteered at the East Cooper Community Outreach clinic weekly, where he provided free dental care to the underserved community of Charleston, South Carolina.

After successful completion of his masters residency in periodontics, Dr. Romani joined Dr. Thousands practice in St. Augustine and Palm Coast, Florida. He is passionate about periodontics and strives to be a leader in the field of surgical dentistry. Dr. Romani will work closely with your restorative dentist to ensure total comprehensive dental health.

Dr. Romani is in the process of becoming a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and an associate dental surgeon at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine. He will also serve as an adjunct clinical professor in the Department of Stomatology at the Medical University of South Carolina. During his free time, Dr. Romani enjoys live music, traveling, surfing, kayaking, skiing, and fishing.

My name is Hailey Wilson McKinley, I received my bachelors degree in biology with a minor in chemistry and psychology from Indiana University in Bloomington. Similar to my parents and both grandfathers, I attended the Indiana University School of Dentistry. While in dental school, I developed an interest in Periodontics after receiving a soft tissue graft in my own mouth. I shadowed the periodontal residents throughout the four year of my dental school curriculum and my interest in periodontics was confirmed. I quickly found that I enjoyed periodontal surgical procedures and oral pathology.

Upon graduation from dental school in 2018, I matriculated into the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC (MUSC) for my periodontal residency. While there, I had the privilege of serving as Chief Resident in a program that is renowned for its focus on clinical exposure and case difficulty. Residency allowed me to expound upon the techniques that I began to develop in my dental school education. Through my extensive training, I am now confident and proficient with immediate implants, implants in the esthetic zone, ridge and sinus augmentations, soft tissue grafting, traditional and laser periodontal surgery, periodontal regeneration, and IV sedation. I earned my Master of Science in Dentistry and Periodontics in 2021 after defending my thesis on lateral periodontal cysts at the MUSC Oral Pathology Laboratory.

MUSC is where I had the distinct honor of meeting Dr. Michael Romani. Dr. Romani introduced me to Drs. Bob and John Thousand and the amazing team they have created at Dental Specialists of North Florida. I was honored to join the practice and couldnt be more excited to be a part of this exciting and humbling opportunity. I look forward to treating you in an honest, respectful, and professional manner while providing you and your patients with exceptional surgical results.

I am currently in the process of becoming a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, while maintaining my status as Clinical Associate Professor at MUSC. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and daughter, running, painting, baking, going to the beach, playing pickleball, and trying new restaurants.

I was terrified about getting an implant but the experience from beginning to end was amazing and totally painless. I was pain free from the procedures, even when I got home and the surgical anesthesia wore off. Dr. Romani is absolutely the best. The entire staff is so compassionate and professional. After hearing horror stories from friends who had gone to different dental offices, I was extremely grateful that I chose Dental Specialists!

Dr. John Thousand, IV is the best Perio in Florida! I saw him for a crown lengthening and had a few healing hiccups along the way. He made sure to take great care of me, was accessible and made me feel like everything was going to be okay. I healed perfectly from the procedure and would recommend him and his staff to anyone!

Dr. Thousand"s staff was both professional and easy to work with simultaneously which is no small feat. However the caring and skill that Dr Thousand himself demonstrated impressed me even more. I have had dealings with 3 Dental Surgeons and the job he did was so far above what I had previously experienced that it shocked me. Not certain of the technical terms for the procedure but he extracted the remnants of my front tooth and inserted the base for my implant with amazing results. The only pain I experienced during the entire procedure and during the first two weeks following surgery was the injection of the local anesthetic prior to beginning the procedure. I felt no pain at all during the procedure. As I arrived home I took one pain pill in anticipation of the local anesthetic wearing off. The funny part is I never again felt any discomfit....ever. When the procedure was completed the dental assistant applied the standard gauze pad to the area and asked me to keep it in place or replace it periodically until the bleeding stopped. When I removed the first pad upon getting home their was no more than one or two drops of blood in evidence and I had no need to replace it. My post op follow up was a piece of cake and all was " looking great". I will, recommend this office to anyone I know and they will be my go to office for any future need.

I'm from Boston and had to get my wisdom teeth pulled while I was down in Florida. I ended up going here and my mine was blown. From Boston to Florida I've never seen a more professional dentist's practice with state of the art equipment. The staff is so nice and will make your experience a positive one. Everyone I've spoken to that have had their wisdom teeth out went through a nightmare, I was feeling fine the next day. Go here for all your dental needs, you will be blown away.

I had to get gum disease removed before heart surgery, Dr Romani chiseled my teeth so bad that I have nerve damage and very big gaps between my teeth. I literally need to take floss everywhere I go !! They called my surgery a success !! It was a total failure, I would have never got it done with them knowing this could be the outcome. They will not respond to my emails to help me. I do not recommend them...

Faced with a denture, bridge or up to three implants, after a reasonable amount of research, I chose the latter. While my long time dental professional was capable of providing this service, he instead deferred to Dr. Thousand for the actual implants and he in turn would provide the abutments and crowns. He saw this as a team effort all the while praising Dr. Thousand for the exceptional reputation he is known for promising nothing less than a positive experience. Next came my first sit-down with Dr. Thousand. While I essentially knew what to expect, I wasn't necessarily prepared for what followed. After being introduced to his assistant and finding a place in one of his chairs, he arrived, hand out, smiling and sat down right next to me. Looking straight into my eyes, he asked me to tell him about myself. It seemed important to him, that we get acquainted not just as a new patient, but, as a new professional friend. I was taken aback and very much impressed all the while confirming I made the right decision and can confidently look forward to the very finest care. As a retired manufacturing executive, he immediately began to speak in my terms including a detailed description of what to expect, the technology involved and the origin of the tools and equipment that he would be using. All the very finest the industry has to offer. Then came the first session including a single implant followed a few weeks later with two additional ones. From beginning to end, I experienced virtually no pain and can only describe my experience as slightly uncomfortable. In fact aside from knowing there had been work earlier in each of the days of my appointments, I moved on with my day only slightly modified to ensure I was taking the proper care completely forgetting the work that had occurred just a few hours before. The entire team from the office to Dr. Thousand's assistants left me impressed and very much pleased. A wonderful and necessary experience for which I will be forever grateful. My compliments for an all around excellent experience. A job very well done.
