Laren J. Garfield, D.D.S. was born in Chicago, Illinois. He has been married for the past 30 years to Marlene and they have two children, Jennifer and Jared. In 1974, Dr. Garfield graduated from the University of Illinois Champaign with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He then went on to the University of Illinois Dental School from 1975 to 1979.
Dedicating his professional life to dentistry, Dr. Garfield has participated in over 1,000 hours of continuing education courses to enhance his practice in the areas of crowns and bridges, veneers, implants and cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Garfield believes education is of paramount importance in order to provide the highest standard of dental care. Dr. Garfield is an active member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentists, Chicago Dental Society, Illinois State Dental Society as well as the Seattle Study Club.
Dr. Gelman earned his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine where he was awarded the Academy of Dental Materials Award for Excellence in Scholarship in Dental Materials and the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity Award for Undergraduate Scholarship. He continued his post-doctorate training in a General Practice Residency at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center, an affiliate hospital of The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, where he gained extensive experience in dental implantology and prosthodontics. Prior to attending dental school, Dr. Gelman graduated summa cum laude from Yeshiva University with a B.A. in Biology.
Dr. Gelman has conducted research in modern aesthetic dental ceramics and presented that research before the International Association of Dental Research. His techniques have been published in the peer reviewed Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Drawn to dentistry both for its creative and technical aspects, Dr. Gelman has a passion for cosmetic and implant dentistry. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Illinois Dental Association, and the Chicago Dental Society, and is committed to lifelong learning through continuing education.
Originally from New York, Dr. Gelman now lives with his family on the North Shore. In his free time he enjoys playing guitar, brewing beer, discussing super heroes with his 8 year old son, chasing after his 5 year old daughter, or playing with his 2 year old daughter.
Dr. Glenn was born and raised in Chicago and its northern suburbs. He currently resides in Buffalo Grove with his wife, Janice and their son, Bradley and daughter, Amanda. Dr. Glenn is the eldest child of Dr. Neil Shulkin. He received his Bachelor and Doctorate Degrees in dental surgery from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry, after attending Indiana University majoring in Chemistry. He also served as an assistant at two major dental laboratories in the Chicago area Major-Monroe Dental Laboratory and Summit Dental Laboratory. After graduating, Dr. Glenn joined his father and later took over his fathers practice.
Dr. Glenn was one of the first American dentists to be formally trained and to be certified as a trainer in the use of YAG laser. He has presented seminars and training on laser technology and implementation at his practice to hundreds of dentists, and has lectured at universities, professional, business and community groups. Dr. Glenn was the first dentist in the U.S. to utilize the Nd:YAG laser following FDA approval.
Dr. Shulkin was charter member of the Board of Directors and a member of the Finance Committee of the International Academy of Laser Dentistry (1990). He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Laser Dentistry, a member of the American Society of Lasers in Medicine & Surgery, the American Dental Association, the Chicago Dental Society, the Illinois State Dental Society, Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity, the International Society of Laser Dentistry, the American Academy of Dental Group Practice, the Academy of General Dentistry, the Greater OHare Association, and a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Institute. He has earned hundreds of hours of continuing education.
Dr. Glenn Shulkin is co-author (with Dr. Neil Shulkin) of a textbook titled, Professionally Speaking: A Marketing and Management Handbook for Dental and Medical Professionals which is now in national distribution. He has appeared on several television programs, including WCIU-TV, American Medical TV, and the American Airlines TV. He has also been subject of several newspaper reports internationally.

Had been going here since the past 4 years. This dentist is next to impossible to get an appointment with anymore. Plus their upsell is really bad and hard. They want to put anything possible that is not covered by insurance. If you cancel an appointment, 50$ charge. The doctor rarely listens to any concern. He would take a quick glance for a few seconds and run away.

I can't say enough about my experience with everyone at Dental Design. Dr Gelman is kind and an excellent dentist. He listened to my concerns and offered me several options. The administration staff couldn't be better. They were very accommodating and genuinely cared that I left happy. I've moved out of state but WILL be coming back to go to my new dentist! What a great team!

My biggest fear is the dentist, not at Dental Design. I am more than comfortable with everyone I have come in contact with at this office. Always polite, patient and willing to help with whatever questions and concerns I have had on the phone and in the office. Would I recommend Dental Design, Absolutely.

My wife and I have the oldest open patient account at this practice. In fact, three generations of our family are patients there. As usual, my dental hygienist was Suzanna who does an amazing job without any discomfort at all. I often take a nap while she works on my teeth. Be sure to request Suzanna for your next cleaning. You'll be more than pleased with her caring demeanor and the results.

Dr. Gelman & staff are always superb! Knowledgeable, personable, precise, reasonable, listeners & educators. All personnel from front desk, hygienists and doctors are excellent at their respective areas of expertise. They work seamlessly as a team to deliver a personally unsurpassed dental experience. Having come to know Dr. Garfield & his crew & now Dr. Gelman and his, there has been no drop off in care or quality. So long as I reside within reasonable driving distance Dental design will continue to be my dental office; 11 years & counting.

They saved a tooth that was barely salvageable next to my front teeth. The tooth had a root canal 2 years ago, and half the tooth was a filling. Thankfully Dr. Garfield was able to put a crown on it. All 3 doctors honestly do the best dental work I have ever seen. They provided a treatment plan to get my whole mouth in better shape. When I was between insurance and had to pay for an expensive procedure, they allowed me to pay on an installment plan. These dentists and their hygienists are fantastic!
