For optimal oral health, we strongly recommend visiting our Leawood dental office at least twice a year. That means seeing us for a checkup and cleaning at least every six months. Dr. Dennis C. Ayer received his bachelors degree in biology from Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. Then, after a brief three-year stint in as a representative with Pfizer, Inc., he began his dental studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. In 1984, the same year he graduated, Dennis C. Ayer, DDS was founded with the goal of providing comprehensive, advanced dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.
Since earning his DDS, Dr. Ayer has attended numerous post-graduate continuing education courses, logging over 3,500 hours. In these classes, he focused primarily on the medical and cosmetic aspects of dentistry. As an active member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, hes had extra opportunities to sharpen his skills with Botox and dermal fillers.
Dr. Ayers post-graduate education has also included programs sponsored by the Las Vegas Institute, Dr. Omer Reeds Study Group, and the Madow Study Group. Furthermore, he is certified to offer dental implants, Invisalign, Botox, dermal fillers, and SomnoMed.
Dr. Ayer has always been a huge advocate for service. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 2016 from the United States Army and the 'Cross of St. Benedict' in 2014 for his lifelong efforts dedicated to Benedictine College. He is currently a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve serving as the IMA Dental Corps DENCOM Director. Dr. Ayer is also an active member of St. Josephs Parish, The St. Joseph Knights of Columbus, the Leadership Lenexa Program, and The Greater Kansas City Sports Commission. Additionally, a Dr. Ayer Co-Founded a 501C3 Charitable Corporation. This organization is the Benedictine Raven Soccer Booster Club (BRSB). He was the recent 20 year past President of BRSB. Dr. Ayer was also issued the first U.S.S.F. soccer coaching license in the state of Kansas (it is an active C License since 1979).
Dr. Ayer and his spouse Ginny were married in 1981. Together, they have three grown children. When hes not helping patients create beautiful smiles he enjoys family, friends, exercise, lake activities, some golf, rock and roll music, and viewing various sports like soccer, baseball, football and hockey.

Scaling and root planing can essentially be thought of as a professional cleaning thats been elevated to the next level. Our hygienist will specifically target the areas around and underneath the patients gum line, removing buildups of plaque and tartar with special instruments. Then, they will pay special attention to the tooth root surfaces, which can develop rough spots over time that are notorious for attracting dangerous bacteria. By smoothing these surfaces gradually, we can minimize the risk of further inflammation.
The use of ARESTIN is often recommended as a helpful supplement following traditional scaling and root planing. The antibiotic will be placed directly in the infected pockets of the gum tissue so that it can continue fighting infectious bacteria that may have been accidentally left behind during the initial procedure. Its effective for up to 30 days and has even been shown through studies to help reduce the size of the periodontal pockets over time.

The office is beautiful. The employees were all very pleasant, they seemed happy to be there. I hadn't been to the dentist in awhile and I was nervous but it was made to be a very pleasant experience and my teeth feel fantastic, it was a great cleaning.

I recently had my first dental visit at the office of Dr. Ayer, having just moved from Colorado. I am retired and have lived in 7 States during my career and have had exposure to at least 10 different dentist offices in that time. I was amazed at the professionalism, friendliness, and attention to detail from both the office staff and in particular, Dr. Ayer. He was thorough in his explanation to me of my current dental needs, and his positive attitude was a welcome change from previous dentists. I walked into Dr Ayer's dental clinic as a new patient needing several crowns. Dr Ayer was going to repair terrible work I'd had at a dental clinic in Overland Park a few weeks prior. I was apprehensive and very anxious about the crowns because of the negative experience I'd had at a different clinic. However, from the moment I walked in I was greeted politely. Dr Ayer's dental assistant Leslie, helped me feel at ease after actively listening to a brief description of why I was there. I voiced my anxiousness and sensitivity to pain and both Leslie and Dr Ayer made sure to calm my nerves and provide the appropriate pain relief before beginning the procedure. One thing I highly appreciated about my experience at Dr Ayer's clinic was the attention to detail. For example, during the procedure Dr Ayer would occasionally ask if I was in pain and doing okay. He would also smother lip balm which was a first for me and very much appreciated after having my mouth open for a long period of time. Both Dr Ayer and Leslie made me feel heard when I expressed a concern about the procedure. Communication is an important role in patient comfort and the painless, quick, and professional procedure made me feel like less anxious and wanting to come back again. Thank you to the treatment team at Dr Ayer's office for your exemplary professionalism. Job well done.

Dr. Ayers and his staff have always provided me with a great experience when visiting his office. On more then one occasion he has re-arranged his schedule to meet with me for special treatment (broken tooth, loose crown etc.). I have followed him thru 3 locations and will continue to do so. Dr Ayer has been our family dentist since 2010. A couple of my kids were going to a pediatric dentist back then, but as they got older, we all go to him now. Great care and his staff are so nice and accommodating. Always a good outcome!
