Everybody gets a dry mouth from time to time. Temporary mouth dryness can be brought on by dehydration, stress, or simply the normal reduction in saliva flow at night. But persistent mouth dryness, a condition known as xerostomia, is cause for concern.

Xerostomia occurs when your salivary glands, which normally keep your mouth moist by secreting saliva, are not working properly. A chronic lack of saliva has significant health implications. For one thing, it can be difficult to eat with a dry mouth; tasting, chewing and swallowing may also be affected. This could compromise your nutrition. Also, a dry mouth creates ideal conditions for tooth decay. That's because saliva plays a very important role in keeping decay-causing oral bacteria in check and neutralizing the acids these bacteria produce; it is the acid in your mouth that erodes tooth enamel and starts the decay process. A dry mouth can also cause bad breath.

  • Medications. For most people suffering from dry mouth, medications are to blame. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, there are more than 500 medications (both prescription and over-the-counter) that have this side effect. Antihistamines (for allergies), diuretics (which drain excess fluid), and antidepressants, are high on the list of medications that cause xerostomia. Chemotherapy drugs can also have this effect.
  • Disease. Some systemic (general body) diseases can cause dry mouth. Sjgren's syndrome, for example, is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack its own moisture-producing glands in the eyes and mouth. Other diseases known to cause dry mouth include diabetes, Parkinson's disease, cystic fibrosis and AIDS.
  • If you are taking any medication regularly, it's possible that your physician can either suggest a substitute or adjust the dosage to relieve your symptoms of dry mouth. If this is not possible or has already been tried, here are some other things you can do:

  • Sip fluids frequently. This is particularly helpful during meals. Make sure what you drink does not contain sugar and isn't acidic, as these will both increase your risk of tooth decay. All sodas, including diet varieties, should be avoided, as they are acidic and attack the tooth surface.
  • Chew sugarless gum. This will help stimulate saliva flow if your salivary glands are not damaged. Choose a variety that contains xylitol, a natural sugar substitute that can be protective against tooth decay.
  • Have an exam/cleaning.If you have dry mouth, it's more important than ever to maintain your regular schedule of visits to the dental office. Please be sure to let us know what medications you are taking, particularly if there have been any changes recently. We will do our best to help relieve any dry-mouth symptoms you are experiencing.
  • Dry mouth, caused by insufficient saliva flow, is more than a minor annoyance to the millions who suffer from it. That's because saliva helps maintain oral health in a variety of ways. If your mouth is persistently dry, here's what you should know...Read Article

I'm sorry, but this is a horrible dentist's office. My wife had a procedure here not long ago. They've provided her with absolutely nothing, no medication for the pain, and removed a wisdom tooth that did not need to be released until they corrected a previous procedure. No, returned phone calls back or checking to ensure she's ok. We had to visit the emergency room due to the pain. While she was in the middle of the procedure already terrified they came and asked her about her bill and actually had her sign acknowledging her co-payment, IN THE MIDDLE OF HER PROCEDURE!!!!! Extremely unprofessional and a lack of disregard for patient care and consideration. I do not recommend them.

I have been struggling with my insecurity towards my teeth. They have been so messed up and I was embarrassed to actually be seen. The entire staff at Crystal Dental are so warm and kind! I was put to ease immediately. I've had several treatments now and I can honestly say my smile hasn't looked this good in years! They are also so accommodating with their schedule and I never have to sit and wait to be seen! I definitely recommend anyone looking for a great dentist to come here!

If you have any fear or dread of going to a dentist, Crystal Dental is the place for you! Every person in there is extremely nice and makes you feel comfortable and at ease. The atmosphere is very relaxing. I cannot say enough about Dr Correa-Velosa. I have always dreaded going to the dentist but she is so very outstanding I do not mind any more. Every time I have had a cavity filled or any work done, she is finished while I am still waiting for the worst to come! She is very mindful of how you are feeling and will stop any time you need a break. She is extremely highly skilled and very concerned with the perfection of her work. I was very upset when my previous dentist had to leave. I should have known he would bring only the best in to replace him! You would have a hard time finding a more skilled, more caring dentist! Once again Dr. Correa-Velosa was wonderful when I had to go see her. She is so careful and thorough and always concerned about my being in any pain. She is excellent!!! Just went in to have a crown replace an old filling. She had the old filling out and a temporary crown on and me out of there in no time at all, and that was after making sure it fit and felt comfortable! Once again it was completely painless. Dr Correa-Velosa is just the best!!!

This company is out to scam people. Had to get Groupon involved to get my money back. Groupon is going to be investigating the scam they tried to pull. Would never use them based on the incredible poor customer service I got from the person that called me.

Always very nice and good to explain what's going on with treatment, or in this case, the installation of my bridge. I appreciate her professionalism and that of her staff as well. So glad I found Crystal Dental of Fresno! I also appreciate the office staff's helpfulness and patience when I need to change my appointments due to work. It's good too when a tooth problem that I thought couldn't be fixed has a simple solution; my former dentist didn't mention such a fix.

The staff at crystal dental couldn't be more helpful and kind. I have a severe spinal degeneration and the staff goes out of their way to make me as comfortable as possible. Dr. Correa-Velosa has the best touch giving oral shots as any dentist I have ever known.
