Advancements in dentistry have not just made treatment more efficient and effective. Many of these systems address common concerns that often keep patients away from the dentist, such as a fear of pain or confusion over how to best manage their condition. Common tools include:

  • Digital Impressions: Impressions are required to create customized restorations like dental crowns, but traditional putty is uncomfortable, to say the least. Digital scanning makes modern impressions a breeze.
  • Some dentists no longer need to rely on noisy drills and use precise, minimally invasive lasers or other alternatives. Furthermore, certain offices usesame-day restorations so that you can receive yourcrown or veneer as soon as possible.

General dentists are often referred to as the 'quarterbacks' of an entire team of doctors who might care for your oral health throughout a lifetime. Trying to determine on your own exactly who you need to see for a toothache, for example, can not only be costly: it can also have serious and lasting repercussions on your health.

Your general dentist will also get to know your (and your family's) unique health risks over the years, anticipating concerns that might arise. For these reasons, biannual checkups really are the most effective way to keep your smile in top shape.

It is important to note that crowns require a certain amount ofhealthy dental tissue for support. For this reason,an extraction might be necessary if your tooth is too compromised to support a dental crown. If this is the case, your doctor can replace your tooth with a dental implant and custom crown.

If decay has reached the inner portion of your tooth, your doctor may recommend root canal treatment. Following a root canal, your doctor will typically cover your tooth with a dental crown to protect the remaining tissue.

Dental crowns can conceal cosmetic imperfections such as intrinsic stains and disproportionately sized teeth. Although porcelain veneers and dental bonding also hide flaws, they may not provide enough coverage in some cases.

Single missing teeth can be replaced with implant-supported dental crowns. Unlike traditional dental bridges, implant-supported crowns do not require modification of your adjacent teeth. Implants also prevent jawbone recession following tooth loss.

In most cases, yes however, they may not be the best solution for your needs.Fillings, inlays, or onlays can be used to replace a decayed or damaged portion of a tooth. While these solutions may be a suitable option for minor cavities or trauma, a dental crown is needed for more severe issues because it can provide much greater protection.

The dentist will place your crown over thetooth and make sure it fits comfortably. Your dentist can make any necessary adjustments to achieve a proper fit. Then they will secure the crown in place with dental cement.

Althoughcrowns are made with high-quality materials, they are notindestructible. You will eventually need to replace the restoration, but there are a few things you can do to help your crown last, including:

  • Practice good oral hygiene: For the most part, you can care for a dental crown much like your natural teeth. However, be sure to use a non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid scratching the porcelain. Floss front to back rather than up and down so that you do not dislodge your crown.
  • Minimizewear and tear: If you grind your teeth, be sure to wear a nightguard to avoid excessive wear on your crown. You should also avoid habits such as opening packages with your teeth and biting your nails.
  • Poorly manufacturedcrowns are also more likely tobreak early on, which is why it is importantto choose a reputable dentist. Your dentist should also ensure that your crown fits properly in your smile. Crowns are not designed to bear the brunt of your bite. If your bite force is notevenly distributed across your dental arch, your crown can sustain irreparable damage.

Modern dental crowns are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. After receiving a permanent crown, many patients find they are able to speak more clearly and chew more comfortably. If you received a dental crownto achieve a cosmetic upgrade, the results can provide improved self-confidence.

A bridge renews your ability to chew andspeak properly. A bridge not onlyimmediately improvesyour quality of life, butalso prevents surrounding teeth from shifting. Thislowers your risk of misalignment in the future.

Prior to placing your bridge, your dentist will conduct a bite assessmentto ensure that your new prosthetic fits comfortably in yoursmile. There are a variety of materials that can be used to craft bridges, including porcelain, zirconia, and porcelain-fused-to-metal.Your dentist can help you choose the besttype for you based on your budget and goals.

If you need to replace a single tooth, you may consider the benefits of an implant-supported crown. However, if you are missing several teeth or an entire arch, you may qualify forimplant-supported dentures.
