Cosmetic & Family Dentistry is a Stamford based family dentist practice that treats patients of all ages. We are committed to delivering the highest quality dental care and do so using advanced dental equipment. Dr Rachel Messinger received a DDS from the University of Michigan School Of Dentistry and completed a General Practice Residency at Jamaica Hopsital in Queens, NY, Dr. Messinger received a fellowship for Advanced Esthetic and Advanced Restorative Dentistry at The Pankey Institute, Kep Biscayne, FL. She taught and lectured at The New York Univesity School Of Dentistry. She is a current member of The American Dental Association, The Connecticut State Dental Association, The Academy of General Dentistry and The Spear Study Club. Dr Messinger has been in practice for over fifteen years and brings her advanced skills and extensive experience in all areas of cosmetic dentistry to help create the healthy and beautiful smiles that each patient deserves. Outside of the profession, Dr Messinger enjoys spending time with her husband and three children, travelling, skiing, hiking and volunteering.
Mangala is an experienced and skilled dental hygienist and has been with the practice for many years. She brings to the practice a wealth of knowledge and is happy to provide outstanding care for each of her patients.
Alyssa is a native of Stamford. She began working in our office in 2006 as a receptionist for Dr. Orlow. Today, she oversees the daily office functions and is the treatment coordinator. She helps keep our office atmosphere warm and fun, while making sure things run smoothy for patients. She's always looking to provide a personal touch that can make each patient's experience special. In her free time, she enjoys her family, especially her two young children. Alyssa has a culinary arts degree and enjoys cooking for family and friends.
The team at Cosmetic & Family Dentistry believe in the importance of preventative care. We focus on keeping patients in good oral health so that they can live a full, healthy, and enjoyable life that is free from oral pain. This starts by educating our patients on what they can do to stay healthy at home. In our family dentist office we recommend that patients eat a healthy diet that consists of green leafy vegetables, lean protein, nuts, dairy products, and crunchy fruits and veggies. Eating these foods along with drinking water can help to keep teeth healthy and make them stronger. By simultaneously reducing sugar intake, patients can also reduce their risk of cavities.
It is also important to brush and floss throughout the day. Instead of waiting for bedtime to brush teeth, carry a small toothbrush and use it after meals and snacks. This makes it possible to remove sugar and bacteria from the teeth and gums before it has the opportunity to turn into acid that can attack the teeth. This preventative step can greatly reduce a persons' risk of getting a cavity or gum disease. We understand the importance of taking these steps at home and will spend the time necessary to educate and inform patients so that they can stay healthy overall. Education, after all, is essential for living a long and healthy life.
Understanding the importance of these regular dental exams, the staff at Cosmetic & Family Dentistry work to make each patient extremely comfortable. This includes being welcoming and kind while performing dental treatments in a way that is painless and relaxing. Patients visit our dentist office because they trust us to do just that take care of their teeth and gums, gently. The majority of our patients are local and come from the greater Stamford area, we also see patients that are looking for gentle dental care.
Seniors, on the other hand, often struggle with gum disease and oral infections. As people age, their teeth can become weaker and infected more easily. Bone loss is incredibly common with seniors and by conducting regular dental exams, the team at Cosmetic & Family Dentistry can help seniors to have strong teeth and reduce the risk of them falling out. Since over seventy percent of U.S. adults suffer from tooth loss, preventative care is important.
A. Primary, or 'baby,' teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to come in.
A. First, rinse the irritated area with warm salt water and place a cold compress on the face if it is swollen. Give the child acetaminophen for any pain, rather than placing aspirin on the teeth or gums. Finally, see a dentist as soon as possible.
A. Sealants work by filling in the crevasses on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This shuts out food particles that could get caught in the teeth, causing cavities. The application is fast and comfortable and can effectively protect teeth for many years.
A. Have your family dentist evaluate the fluoride level of your child's primary source of drinking water. If your child is not getting enough fluoride internally through water (especially if the fluoride level is deficient or if your child drinks bottled water without fluoride), then we may prescribe fluoride supplements.
A. Soft plastic mouthguards can be used to protect teeth, lips, cheeks and gums from sport related injuries. A custom-fitted mouthguard will protect your teeth from injuries and even provide protection from severe injuries to the head.
A. There is very little risk in dental X-rays. Family dentists are especially careful to limit the amount of radiation to which you and your family are exposed. Lead aprons and high-speed film are used to ensure safety and minimize the amount of radiation. Digital x-rays provide an even greater level of protection by using up to 90 percent less radiation.

Rachel A. Messinger DDS & team are the best! Alyssa is so friendly and helpful. She assisted me with scheduling my dentist visit, my husband's visit and also my son for his very first dentist visit. When I arrived at the office with my son, Peter, Mangala was very friendly and welcoming. She is knowledgeable and I didn't feel rushed at all. Mangala took her time with me and my son and made my son feel comfortable and happy at his very first dentist visit. Mangala gave my son toys and a bouncy ball too, which was so caring of her. Dr. Messinger and her staff are the best. I haven't had a smile like this in forever. I cracked my right front tooth in half and Dr. messenger totally repaired the tooth and gave me a whole new smile!

I recently moved to the area and luckily found this dental office. The office is clean/safe and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Mangal was terrific for my cleaning and made it a stress-free experience. I also had a chipped tooth issue that I had visited a few dentists about in NYC and nobody could figure it out. Dr. Messenger took the time to listen and figured out the issue and repaired it with a meticulous approach. I felt very well taken care of and would highly recommend this dental office.

Dr Rachel Messinger and her staff are professional and gave me a lot of confidence as a terrified skeptical patient towards dentistry. She crafted a nightguard for my TMJ and teeth clenching that actually gave me relief! I had been to a handful of dentists over the past seven years in Stamford and she is the only one that actually helped me and created something that gave me relief. Great experience can't recommend highly enough! I hadn't been to the dentist in a long time and had a ton of anxiety about going in. Dr. Messinger was very helpful and kind as soon as I entered the door. Mangala helped me with my X-rays and scans and was a pleasure to deal with. Dr. Messinger was informative and I really appreciated how she went into depth to make sure sure I understood my care plan. My cleaning was so gentle and I had zero discomfort! I'm so happy I've found a Dental office that I can feel comfortable going to. Highly recommended!! Thank you all!

I've been going to this Cosmetic & Family Dentistry for over 30 years. They are absolutely the best. I am greeted and welcomed every time I visit. My hygienist Mangal is amazing. She's happy, enthusiastic, and performs her job with such efficiency with amazing stories during the entire time. Time flies. I highly recommend the entire team there.

I've been going to Dr. Orlow for over 30 years. I have to admit I was so worried when he announced he was retiring. But he has left us in great hands! Dr. Messinger is very friendly, she listens to her patience and I feel so comfortable going to an appointment.
