The Community Health Center of the New River Valley is a non-profit healthcare organization that serves uninsured individuals, as well as people who are insured with Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance like Anthem.

We offer competent, committed care with a goal of providing an affordable, long-term medical home to people of all ages.

The Giles Center, located in Pearisburg in Giles County, is a satellite clinic of the Community Health Center of the New River Valley and has been in operation since 2007. We are committed to providing valuable healthcare services to the uninsured, as well as those who are insured with commercial insurance, Medicare or Medicaid.

The Giles Center is open Monday Friday, providing family practice, GYN, mental health and dental services. Our full-time nurse practitioner, Morgan Akers, N.P., provides an all-encompassing family practice atmosphere to include: wellness visits, acute/sick visits, school and work physicals, and gynecological care.

Our talented dentist has a background in family and pediatric dentistry, providing full-service dental care to all ages.Dental services which include: exams, x-rays, cleaning, fillings, and prosthetic work, are performed on-site and with high quality care. Dental costs are based on the procedures performed, but all procedures qualify for the Discount Fee Program which also includes dentures.

The Radford/Pulaski Center is the most recent office to open of the Community Health Center of that New River Valley. Opening in April, 2017 and located in the Town of Dublin, the Center serves to continue our mission in providing affordable and high quality healthcare in a more convenient location for residents of Pulaski County and the City of Radford.

This Center offers Family Practice, GYN, Mental Health and dental services to patients of all ages including those who have no insurance as well as those who have commercial insurance, Medicaid and Medicare.

Our dental offices provide full-service dental care to include: exams, x-rays, cleanings, fillings, extractions, and prosthetic work such as crowns, and full or partial sets of dentures. Our dentists are committed to the best course of treatment for our patients, and all procedure costs are based on a discount feescale.

Dr. David Roberts is the Chief Medical Officer of the Community Health Center of the New River Valley. Dr. Roberts has over two decades of experience treating patients in our community.He focuses on womens health services.

Specializing in Family Medicine, Dr. Guerra received his medical degree from University of Central Florida College of Medicine where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He then completed his residency at Southern Regional Area Health Education Center, Cape Fear Valley Hospital where he received numerous academic and teaching awards.

Dr. Rebecca King-Mallory comes to the Community Health Center of the New River Valley in Dublin from Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. King-Malloryis the Medical Team Lead at CHCNRV. Specializing in family medicine, Dr. King-Mallory most recently completed her residency at Trident Family Medicine Residency Program where she also served as Resident Clinical Director.

A native of West Virginia, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Marshall University Honors College and went on to receive her medical degree from Marshall University Medical School in Huntington. Her background includes extensive research, award-winning academics, numerous awards including honors in surgery, and recognition for her commitment to volunteerism and community service.

A graduate of Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Thomas has extensive experience as a practitioner, teacher, speaker, and mentor. She completed an Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. Dr. Thomas then returned to Montgomery County, serving as Core Faculty by supervising residents in the Internal Medicine Continuity Clinic at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery in Blacksburg, and serving as the Chair of Internal Medicine at VCOM. Throughout her career, she has mentored hundreds of students and interns and earned multiple teaching awards.

Morgan Akers is board-certified Family NursePractitioner. She received her Masters of Science in Nursing/ Family Nurse Practitioner degree from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. She provides primary care to patients of all ages.

A Womens Health Nurse Practitioner graduate of Frontier Nursing University in Hyden, Kentucky, Melissa has more than 15 years of experience working in Western Virginia. Her diverse background in womens health includes working in labor/delivery, well-woman exams, postpartum, and episodic visits. Melissa has experience in both large hospital settings and midwifery practices.

Dr. Joshua Pennington works in the Dublin Center. and is our Dentist Team Lead. He is a graduate of Midwestern University. He is originally from the New River Valley. He and his family have come back to the area to serve the community.

Dr. Tahsin Anwar is a graduate of Virginia Tech and Roseman University of Health Sciences in Utah. Dr. Anwar completed her residency at Carilion Clinic General Practice and joins us after several years working in the community health center setting.

Dr. Anwar is fluent in English and Bengali and speaks Spanish conversationally. Her treatment philosophy focuses on treating her patients without judgment, providing quality care regardless of the circumstances. She has an extensive background in service and leadership positions. Her interests include yoga and wellness.

Dr. Berndt received her DMD from University of New England after attaining her undergraduate in Biology from Ferris State University. Prior to joining Community Health Center of the New River Valley she was Resident Dentist for Carilion Dental Care in Roanoke.

She was a member of Carilion Clinics GMEC Trauma Peer Review Committee and Treasurer of UNE American Association of Women Dentists. Dr. Berndts has also volunteered for the Rescue Missions Dental Clinic, The Autism Society of Maine, and Special Olympics.

We welcome Chao Yi Zhang, DDS, back to The Community Health Center of the New River Valley. Dr. Zhang served as a volunteer dental assistant at The Community Health Center before a distinguished academic career at VCU and successful dental practice in Richmond and the New River Valley.

In addition to family dentistry and preventive care, his experience includes comprehensive dental procedures such as operative dentistry, endodontics, digital crown and bridge, removable partial/complete dentures, and implant restorations. He enjoys working with patients of all ages.

Erin Shaffer, LCSWjoined the CHCNRV team in 2017 and is our Director of Behavioral Health Integration. Erin received her Masters in SocialWork from Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, NY. A native of Pulaski County, she has returned to the New River Valley as a place to raise her family. Erin provides psychotherapy to adolescents and adults. She specializes in trauma, particularly traumatic reactions in first responders. She enjoys helping people overcome obstacles and identify ways to live a healthier and happier life! When shes not in the office, shes often spending time with her family and her rescue horse.

Laura Hayes, MSW, Supervisee in Social Workjoined the Center in 2020. She completed her Master of Social Work degree from Radford University and has been working in the field of addiction treatment for over six years. Laura provides psychotherapy for adults and adolescents for a wide range of behavioral health needs with a treatment focus in rational emotive behavior therapy and mindfulness. Outside of work, you can find Laura curled up somewhere comfortable with a good book, a hot mug of tea, and a couple of animals.
