Dr. Anushka Prabhu, a native of Plainsboro, NJ comes from a family of dentists. However, she discovered her interest in dentistry after volunteering in the local hospital clinic during high school. She enjoyed the artistry required to make a beautiful smile. She thus began her educational path. Dr. Anushka graduated Magna Cum Laude from Binghamton University where she majored in Biology and minored in Africana studies.

After enduring the frigid winters of Upstate New York, Dr. Anushka moved to sunny Florida to pursue her dream of becoming a dentist. At Nova Southeastern University, she enrolled in a dual degree program where she pursued her dental degree during the day and her masters in public health at night.

It was during her community rotations in local elementary schools where she realized she wanted to continue her training and specialize in pediatric dentistry. She loved chatting with kids, making them feel comfortable in the dental chair while also teaching them how to keep their teeth healthy for the rest of their lives.

Missing her four seasons and her winter sports, Dr. Anushka moved to The Bronx to continue her education at Jacobi Hospital. There, she learned techniques to treat children of all ages and people with special health care needs.

Invisalign is the brand name for a set of aligners that patients can remove to eat and brush their teeth. Theyre also clear, making it possible to disguise orthodontic treatment. Clear and metal braces, the more traditional options, involve placing brackets on the teeth and connecting them together with wire. The difference is the type of brackets used. All types of braces place pressure on the teeth to move into the desired position.

Treatment with Invisalign involves receiving a set of clear plastic aligners to last the duration of your treatment time. After Dr. Yoni Cohen fits you with the first aligner, you wear it for approximately two weeks before exchanging it for the next aligner in the set. Our dental laboratory in Yorktown Heights creates the set of aligners after receiving specific information about your teeth, gums, and jaws from your dentist. Each aligner gets you just a bit closer to your goal of attractive and properly aligned teeth.

You should plan to wear your aligners from Invisalign all the time except when eating or brushing your teeth. Even though you can remove them whenever you want to, doing so only extends the total time that you must wear them. Be sure to clean each Invisalign clear aligner to avoid the possibility of introducing bacteria back into your mouth. Its also important to exercise caution when wearing the aligners to prevent them from breaking.

As the oldest form of orthodontic treatment, braces made from metal still work very well to bring the teeth into proper alignment. The first thing Dr. Yoni Cohen does when you receive standard braces is to place strong dental adhesive to each of your teeth. This is necessary to allow your dentist to place an individual bracket on each tooth and then connect the top and bottom rows of brackets together with a single thin wire. You will need to return to Cohen Family Smiles approximately once a month throughout your treatment to allow our dentists to tighten your brackets and wires.

Traditional metal braces are still popular among teenagers. One reason is that people expect to see people in this age demographic with a mouthful of brackets and wires. This makes them feel less self-conscious, especially if they have friends receiving braces around the same time. It usually isnt until a young adult has settled into a career that they begin inquiring about Invisalign or clear braces to fix their smile without anyone else knowing about it.

Clear braces can make a good compromise between Invisalign and traditional metal braces. While your teenager might want to receive Invisalign treatment, standard braces are more typical. We encourage you to check with your dental insurance provider regarding you or a family member receiving braces. The insurance agent can verify coverage amounts for the different types of braces, which should make it easier for you to decide on a specific course of treatment. Although we use brackets and wires for clear braces, they match the color of your teeth to the point where people might not realize youre wearing braces at all.

Working as an orthodontist is far more involved than working as a general dentist. This is the reason orthodontists complete additional training lasting up to three years after graduating from dental school. Orthodontist also need to complete a board-certified examination before receiving a license to practice in their state. Both of our dentists have completed this training and certification. Read what some of our patients parents have to say about their experience with orthodontics at Cohen Family Smiles.

People sometimes assume that braces are only for cosmetic reasons. While that is important to a lot of patients, braces also help to improve tooth alignment as well as correct the following types of issues:

  • Spacing: This issue presents the opposite problem of teeth crowding. A patient may be missing a tooth, which leaves too much open space in the mouth. He or she could also have an unusually large jaw and desires to bring the teeth closer together.
  • When these issues go untreated, it increases the likelihood of gum disease, tooth decay, earaches, and headaches as well as the ability to speak and chew food properly. Poorly aligned teeth can also affect self-esteem.

I am extremely happy with the services at this pediatric dentist. Everyone that I encountered were so friendly. My two year old loved the office and the staff. She is usually nervous going to see any type of doctor but from the moment she stepped into the office she was put at ease with the staff and the look of this beautiful office. So glad to have been recommended to come here by my pediatrician. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a pediatric dentist.

The experience at this office was a great one. They were attentive and gentle with my 2 year old who hates going to the dentist. The staff were all really nice. The office itself was beautiful. It was a bit odd not being in an private room, since it was all out in the open but I did see they had some private rooms in the back. Overall, I loved it and will continue bringing my children.

My 3 year old son recently had his first appointment at Cohen Family Smiles. Our visit to their office exceeded my expectations. From the minute we walked in, the environment and staff were warm, welcoming and made my son feel more than comfortable. He even got to pick out a toy from the cute arcade game once he was finished. Thank you again!

Very satisfied with COHEN ,Hello everyone, I hope this information I share with you helps you find the right care ,doctor and facility for your child! The following it's my personal opinion and experience. Been that said. I have been going around for months now looking for a pediatric dentist for my child , we ended up in 4 different locations and doctors some with minimum experience, others with plenty but not with the right resources or equipment as to for what my child needed. We have been charge crazy amount of money in several occasions for a visit! At the end they don't really do anything but take your money. I was really tired of looking for the right place and we came across COHEN and gave them a call hoping to finally find people that care beyond money, so glad we did!!! Very friendly personal and doctors, the facilities are clean and modern, the charges are to me very accessible and fair, having in consideration that I have always been overcharged, I'm very happy with Cohen dentistry and we have made and setup an appointment for my child to get his treatment done. I will be posting an update on how everything went. But so far I'm beyond happy with them and yes I will recommend my friends and family! As well as people that are looking for professional care, affordable and trustworthy. Be safe and thanks

My kids go to Cohen Family Smiles for both dentistry and ortho. The staff is all incredible. From the administrative people at the desk, to the hygienists, dental assistants, and most of all Dr Yoni and Dr Angie, they are all a lovely group. They are thorough, patient and very kind with my kids and with me. The office is always clean and cheery, and makes everyone feel comfortable! Wish they were around when I was a kid. I cannot possibly recommend them enough! Highly recommend bringing your kids to see them.
