In 1966, Dr. Ben Smith, Jr., affectionately known as Big Ben established Smith Dentistry, after two years of dental service in the Navy. His warm sense of humor and gentle care helped him grow his modest family dentistry practice quickly.
Dr. Smiths son, Little Ben, started helping out his fathers practice at an early age. However, he didnt always want to follow in his fathers footsteps, having also picked up Big Bens love of Gulfstream fishing. After three years or working as a mate on a swordfishing boat, that seed of dentistry took root, leading him to pursue his Doctor of Dentistry.
Little Benobtained his degree from UNC-Chapel Hills School of Dentistry in 1994 and joined the family practice. He was blessed to get to work with his father, a skilled master dentist for seven years. Although Big Ben, passed in 2001, young Dr. Ben is continuing his legacy by bringing gentle and high-quality dental care to the Wilmington, North Carolina, area.
We also recognize that good dental care should go beyond the treatments. Thats why we provide all of our services in a comfortable setting so that you can relax throughout the duration of your treatment.
A native of coastal Wilmington, North Carolina, Dr. Smith received his degree in dentistry from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He immediately joined the practice his father, Dr. Clayton B. Smith, Jr. started in 1966.
Dr. Smith is forever the student, seeking out the latest technologies and treatment options for his patients. He has pursued advanced education in endodontics, oral surgery, bone grafting, cosmetic dentistry, implant placement, and restoration, occlusion and TMJ, and most recently oral appliance therapy for bruxism.

My visit at Dr Smith's office was excellent I was greeted and a friendly family like manner. My hygienist was polite caring and made sure I was comfortable throughout my cleaning process, Dr Smith came in greeted me inquired about my health and my family as usual and was very polite and patient when he examined me. I love Dr Smith and his staff we have been going to them for over 40 years. We started out with his father and Dr Smith came in and he's just like his father loving and caring.

Dr. Smith is very professional and informed in his field; however, the office staff needs to improve their client-focus. Before I even was directed to his office, the staff member who greets patients allowed two people who had arrived 10 minutes after me to enter before me. I had even arrived early, so I was irritated. Then following the procedure and cleaning, the check-out staffer made me wait, then proceeded to chat with a patient she knew well and I had to wait for her to do her job. I am thinking about changing dentists because of these issues. Dr. Smith apologized for his staff, but what I really needed to hear was that he would speak to his staff....

I have been a patient at this dentist office since age 3 yes age 3. That equals to 50 years of coming to the same practice. It has always been a wonderful experience. A very professional group. Dr. Smith and his entire staff...hygienists, assistants, receptionists, insurance staff....are professional in every way and treat you like part of the family. Decades of dentistry experience in a friendly, caring, casual atmosphere. New to town I had tried a different dentist and left their office after about a year. Just wasn't pleased with the dentist's work and attitude. Happy to have found Smith Dentistry. Look forward to the appointments a couple times each year. If you're looking for a family dentist...look no further!
