Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the surgical specialists of the dental profession, undergoing extensive training that begins with dental school and continues with at least four years of hospital-based surgical residency. An OMS is truly an expert in face, mouth and jaw surgery. Procedures performed by Drs. Clark, Holmes, and Smith include: Dental implants, Wisdom teeth management and extraction, Tooth extractions, TMJ and facial pain, Facial cosmetic surgery, Corrective jaw surgery, Facial injury and trauma surgery, Oral, head and neck pathology, Cleft lip/palate and craniofacial surgery, Obstructive sleep apnea, Common oral surgeries (e.g., frenectomy, expose and bond, bone grafting), and Administration of anesthesia
Clark Holmes Smith Oral Facial Surgery has an incredible team of individuals who share the goal of providing the best possible surgical care in a friendly, welcoming, and clean environment. The surgical staff are experienced certified oral and maxillofacial surgical assistants who assist in administration of IV sedation and surgery. Their backgrounds include experience in dental assisting and registered nursing. All staff are informed administrative personnel, well-versed in health and insurance policies, and all are CPR certified.
Oral and maxillofacial surgery requires up to 6 additional years of hospital based surgical and anesthesia training. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Dr. Holmes, Dr. Clark and Dr. Smith and Dr. Charles R, IV treat a wide variety of problems relating to the mouth, teeth and facial regions. Our surgeons practice a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with expertise in corrective jaw surgery, wisdom tooth removal and oral pathology. They can also diagnose and treat facial pain, facial injuries and perform a full range of dental implant procedures.
Our staff is trained in assisting our surgeons with IV sedation within our office setting. Patients are continuously monitored during and after surgery. In addition, general anesthesia provided by a board-certified anesthesiologist is available within our facility.
Dr. Mark Clark graduated Pi Tau Sigma with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama in 1972. He then attended dental school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry and graduated with honors in 1976. After earning his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1980, he served his general surgery internship from 1980 through 1981. He completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery, at which time he held the position of chief resident, in 1982.
Dr. Clark opened his private practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery in 1983 in Birmingham. He previously served as Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at St. Vincents Hospital for nine years. He maintains a position of clinical assistant professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry. He serves on the board of the McCallum UAB Alumni Society. He is a Fellow and member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a member of the American Dental Association, American Medical Association, and Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as well as many local organizations.
In July 2002, he and Dr. Holmes joined practices at a state-of-the-art outpatient surgery facility located in the historic Southside neighborhood of Birmingham. They have since opened other locations in downtown Trussville, Gardendale, and in the community of Inverness. In July 2019, Dr. Smith joined the practice and the trio opened a fifth location in Alexander City soon after. The group offers a wide range of treatments including extractions, orthognathic surgery, dental implants, cosmetic, and reconstructive procedures.

They are awesome went in today to have a procedure done i was in so so much pain I mean hadn't been able to eat or sleep in a week now and my normal dentist referred me to them becuse he couldn't preform it his self and so I went in to see Dr Smith he reassured me everything was good took me back and I felt nothing he was so friendly and confident in what he does that it made me feel better I couldn't of asked for anyone better I was truly blessed to be referred to them

Clark and Holmes are wonderful! My son had his Wisdom Teeth removed and they were all so kind! They called when we got home to make sure my son was doing ok! I highly recommend their services!

It's been 4 years since these folks stole my wisdom teeth, and I still haven't gotten over it. They were my teeth, and I asked up front to keep them! I have literally told so many people not to go here because they didn't respect my religious beliefs, and they were also not very professional while discharging me. They treated me like a child, and wouldn't even speak directly to me when providing my after care directions. Worst dental experience ever!

I brought my mother Angelina Gossett to this Gardendale location. Great receptionist and from what I understand from my mother she was very satisfied with the concern, kindness and professional help and work she received from the dental doctor and staff. The staff and doctor was great. I was not put to sleep because I did not have anyone to stay with me so they just gave me shots to deaden it and cut the rest of the tooth out. It took maybe 5 minutes at the most and did not feel no more than a little pressure but no pain and it was over. I would recommend them to everyone and if I need a oral doctor again I will call them first.
