Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the surgical specialists of the dental profession, undergoing extensive training that begins with dental school and continues with at least four years of hospital-based surgical residency. An OMS is truly an expert in face, mouth and jaw surgery. Procedures performed by Drs. Clark, Holmes, and Smith include: Dental implants, Wisdom teeth management and extraction, Tooth extractions, TMJ and facial pain, Facial cosmetic surgery, Corrective jaw surgery, Facial injury and trauma surgery, Oral, head and neck pathology, Cleft lip/palate and craniofacial surgery, Obstructive sleep apnea, Common oral surgeries (e.g., frenectomy, expose and bond, bone grafting), and Administration of anesthesia
Clark Holmes Smith Oral Facial Surgery has an incredible team of individuals who share the goal of providing the best possible surgical care in a friendly, welcoming, and clean environment. The surgical staff are experienced certified oral and maxillofacial surgical assistants who assist in administration of IV sedation and surgery. Their backgrounds include experience in dental assisting and registered nursing. All staff are informed administrative personnel, well-versed in health and insurance policies, and all are CPR certified.
Oral and maxillofacial surgery requires up to 6 additional years of hospital based surgical and anesthesia training. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Dr. Holmes, Dr. Clark and Dr. Smith and Dr. Charles R, IV treat a wide variety of problems relating to the mouth, teeth and facial regions. Our surgeons practice a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with expertise in corrective jaw surgery, wisdom tooth removal and oral pathology. They can also diagnose and treat facial pain, facial injuries and perform a full range of dental implant procedures.
Our staff is trained in assisting our surgeons with IV sedation within our office setting. Patients are continuously monitored during and after surgery. In addition, general anesthesia provided by a board-certified anesthesiologist is available within our facility.
Dr. Mark Clark graduated Pi Tau Sigma with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama in 1972. He then attended dental school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry and graduated with honors in 1976. After earning his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1980, he served his general surgery internship from 1980 through 1981. He completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery, at which time he held the position of chief resident, in 1982.
Dr. Clark opened his private practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery in 1983 in Birmingham. He previously served as Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at St. Vincents Hospital for nine years. He maintains a position of clinical assistant professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry. He serves on the board of the McCallum UAB Alumni Society. He is a Fellow and member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a member of the American Dental Association, American Medical Association, and Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as well as many local organizations.
In July 2002, he and Dr. Holmes joined practices at a state-of-the-art outpatient surgery facility located in the historic Southside neighborhood of Birmingham. They have since opened other locations in downtown Trussville, Gardendale, and in the community of Inverness. In July 2019, Dr. Smith joined the practice and the trio opened a fifth location in Alexander City soon after. The group offers a wide range of treatments including extractions, orthognathic surgery, dental implants, cosmetic, and reconstructive procedures.

If I could leave zero stars I would have! I will never return to their office. I have posts that need to be put in but will be going to a completely different oral surgeon.

I had a very good experience. I hate going to the doctors and this was very nice experience. I had to have one of my back teeth pulled and they did a great job. I will definitely use some again if I need to.

We need to have a molar extracted and I was pleasantly surprised with the staff and the doctor. Very professional and courteous. I was told everything that was going to be done. The next day it was like I had nothing done. I had no pain, no discomfort of any kind.

I had gotten a text, which I didn't see till later, changing my appointment to earlier. They fit me in, even though I'd missed the earlier one. Made me feel totally relaxed, staff very warm. Called me the next day checking on me. They went above and beyond.

Dr. Smith and all the staff I met at Clark, Holmes, and Smith was so professional, friendly, and paid very close attention to detail from the minute I walked into the door until the second we said goodbye. My surgery went well and it was probably the best experience I've ever had when it comes to my teeth. I highly recommend this clinic to anyone with specific needs that can be addressed here.

I never believed that I could go to a dentist appointment and experience such great care and concern. The entire staff is awesome. Dr. Smith is an amazing doctor!!!! Really disappointed right now. My daughter had wisdom teeth removed Tuesday. Had a reaction to antibiotics and had to stop them. No new meds called in and today went to urgent care, she had a fever in pain, nauseous. I have called 3 times to give you a chance to call in a different antibiotic yet no call back yet. So dissatisfied. Her experience with some of the nurses was not good. I told you ahead of time about her anxiety yet you didn't treat her good and to tell her she's being ridiculous among other rude comments well that's unacceptable. Shame on you. No wheelchair taking her out to the car? She was having a panic attack and was locked up? You need to have more compassion for your patients.
