At our dental office, youll experience comprehensive care provided by a skilled staff in a dental office that feels like a friends living room. Sounds pretty nice, right? Were not all about our bottom line herewere about using the least amount of treatment possible so you can spend less time in the chair and more time enjoying your smile! Dr. Cowells approach to dentistry is all about using a light touch. Our relaxed yet effective approach will change the way you think about going to the dentist, and well make you wonder why you ever went anywhere else.
Rather than try to give every patient a fluorescent Hollywood-style smile, our goal is to simply get our patients oral health to a stable and manageable state. We just want to give you exactly what you need to be able to eat, speak, and smile with ease and nothing more. Should you require a more extensive treatment, well be sure to explain why in great detail, and youll be the one who decides to proceed, not us.
We strive to form a partnership with all of our patients rather than just tell them what they need and how were going to give it to them. Different people have different needs and wants, and this is always taken into account when we formulate a treatment plan. Well make sure you know exactly why were recommending certain treatments so that your dental care always comes with peace of mind. If you have a question, ask it, and well take all the time we need to give you a satisfying answer.
Dr. Cowell and our entire team have years of experience treating patients of all ages, so whether your child is getting their first teeth or youre interested in upgrading your dentures, you and all of your loved ones are always welcome to our dental office. We have the fun, welcoming approach that kids love as well as the specialized services that adults need. With us, well make sure your entire family tree is filled with gorgeous, healthy smiles!
Almost every patient who comes through our doors has gone through a dental office where the doctor and staff tried to sell them on a procedure they really didnt need or want. That couldnt be further from how we do things! To us, less is more, and well only recommend the treatments you absolutely need. Well never put pressure on you to get anything you dont want. We want to form a long and trusting relationship with you and your family, and that certainly wont happen if you feel like were just trying to squeeze money out of you! With us, youll always feel like were on your side.
While Dr. Cowell is the first dentist in his family, he feels like the apple didnt fall far from the tree. His father, grandfather, and great grandfather all applied and were accepted to both medical and dental school. While each of them decided to pursue Ph.Ds, Dr. Cowell knew he wanted to be a dentist from the age of 7. His family dentist was a member of his church choir, and Dr. Cowell always enjoyed going to his dental office and just watching what he did. He saw dentistry as a career where he could make his own destiny while being scientific and creative at the same time.
After attending Stetson University as a biology major, Dr. Cowell made his way to the University of Florida College of Dentistry, where he graduated in 1995. In his first year out of school, he worked for a dentist in Jacksonville before taking a job doing nursing home dentistry throughout Florida. Hes always had a calling to help geriatric patients, and serving them is still one of his main passions. He eventually purchased this dental office and has loved being here ever since.
Dr. Cowell loves the outdoors, and he says that growing up in Florida taught him to get outside and be active as much as possible. Youll often find him hiking, going to the beach, swimming, canoe/kayaking, or biking. He also has a bit of a travel bug and an interest in anthropology, so he enjoys going to new places and trying to better understand how people in other cultures live and exist.
Music has always been a big part of his life as well. His mother was a professional concert organist and choirmaster, and he himself played French horn from a young age all the way through college and beyond. These days, he sings with the choir at St. Andrews Episcopal Church. These days, he says that his favorite thing to do lately is just sit by the pool and read about the history of the world.

Today, she is proud to have been working with Dr. Cowell for nearly a decade! Karly is from DeLand in fact, shes the 5th generation of her family to be born and raised here! She is the oldest of four siblings, all of whom are very involved in the community. A checkup is like a dental physical, in that well look at your teeth, gums, jaw, the muscles in your head and neck, as well as any existing dental work so we can learn all we can about your dental health. This will enable us to put together the most conservative plan to meet your unique needs. Then, one of our excellent hygienists will use sophisticated tools to remove any plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums, and theyll also give them a polish to keep them nice and white!
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a very common infection of the gums, roots of the teeth, and the bone that supports them. Common symptoms include red, swollen, and tender gums that bleed often while brushing and flossing. For patients dealing with this problem, our dental office is able to help them using a specialized deep cleaning, which not only removes plaque and bacteria from deep below the gum line, but it also helps lower a persons chances of redeveloping the infection again in the future.
The molars and premolars have very rough and pitted surfaces that can easily trap plaque and food particles, plus they are quite difficult to clean while brushing (particularly for children), making them very susceptible to developing cavities. Dental sealants allow us to give these vulnerable back teeth just a little bit of extra protection. For this, well apply a clear, thin layer of a plastic-based substance to the teeth to establish an invisible barrier that cavity-causing factors cannot cross.
According to research, as many as 1 in 3 people suffer from bruxism, a condition where a person unconsciously clenches their jaw and grinds their teeth while they sleep. Fortunately, taking care of this sneaky problem is as easy as wearing a nightguard to bed. This is a small, custom-made mouthguard that fits comfortably over the teeth and places a barrier between them to prevent any grinding at night.
Oral cancer claims at least one life here in the U.S. every hour of every day, which is tragic because the disease is actually very treatable when detected early. This is why Dr. Cowell recommends that all adults should have at least one oral cancer screening per year, and he will perform one as part of your regular checkups to make sure youre never caught off guard by this disease. It only takes a few minutes, but it could literally be the few minutes that saves your life.
Fluoride is a mineral that is often added to toothpaste and tap water because it has long been shown to help the teeth fight against both decay and cavities. However, more and more people arent getting enough of it in their daily diet to keep their teeth fully protected, which is why Dr. Cowell is happy to include a topical fluoride treatment with every standard checkup. It only takes a few minutes, is completely painless, and its one of the best ways to help you stay cavity-free all year.
Its very common for seniors to develop a variety of dental problems, whether they concern missing teeth or worn out dental restorations. At our dental office, were happy to serve the wisest members of our community so they can have golden smiles well into their golden years. With regular preventive visits and custom-designed restorative care, we can help anyone at any age have a smile they can be proud of.
