Braces today are smaller and less conspicuous and a bit more sophisticated than the conventional gun-metal wire straps. While they still utilize wire straps, newer appliances are much more comfortable. In fact, traditional metal braces can be replaced by clear braces and braces from behind.

Orthodontia is a multi-stage process. First, pretreatment records are made to make an accurate diagnosis. They include medical/dental history, clinical examination, plaster study models of teeth, photos of your face and teeth, and X-rays of your mouth and head. This information will be used to decide on the best treatment.

During the active treatment phase, orthodontic appliances are in place. Appliances are adjusted periodically so that the teeth are moved correctly and efficiently. The time required for orthodontic treatment varies from person to person. Two phases of active treatment are somtimes needed for early orthodontic intervention. An important factor in how long your child wears braces is how well he or she cooperates during treatment.

This treatment can range from 2 to 6 years of age. There are several things we look for at this age including underdeveloped arches, losing baby teeth prematurely, and harmful habits such as finger/thumb sucking. When treatment can be used at this age it is often very successful.

Between the ages of 6-12 years old, we start to see the eruption of the permanent front teeth and the 6-year molars. In this state we are looking at the jaw malocclusion and dental alignment issues. This is typically a great age to start orthodontic treatment as indicated for your child. Treatment at this age is ideal due to the responsiveness from both the soft and hard tissue to the orthodontic movement.

Todays braces are generally less noticeable than their predecessors. Brackets, the part of the braces that hold the wires, are bonded to the front of the teeth. These brackets can be metal, clear, or tooth-colored.

Wires that are used for braces today are also less noticeable. Today`s wires are made of space age materials that exert a steady, gentle pressure on the teeth, making the tooth-moving process faster and more comfortable for patients. In some cases, brackets may be put on the back of the teeth.

Patients typically wear braces for about 24 months, although this varies based on the severity of the problem, the health of the teeth, gums and supporting bone and how closely the patient follows instructions. Usually, adult treatment takes a little longer.

During the treatment phase of orthodontia, it is necessary to periodically re-tighten the interconnecting wires. This causes mild pressure on the brackets or bands to shift teeth or jaws gradually into a desired position. Your childs teeth and jaws may feel slightly sore after such a visit, but the discomfort is short-lived.

If your child wears braces, avoid some kinds of foods, such as sweets, chips and pop. Sugary and starchy foods generate acids and plaque that can cause tooth decay and promote gum disease. Cut healthy hard foods like carrots or apples into smaller pieces.

And by all means, avoid sticky chewy sweets, such as caramel, which can cause wire damage and loosen brackets. Avoid hard and crunchy snacks such as popcorn, nuts, and hard candy, because these can break braces.

Oral hygiene is extremely important during the treatment phase of orthodontia. Insufficient cleaning while wearing braces can cause enamel staining around brackets or bands. Braces have tiny spaces where food particles and plaque get trapped.

Space maintainers can be very important to your childs long-term oral health. If your child loses a baby tooth early through guidance eruption, decay or injury, his or her other teeth could shift and begin to fill the vacant space. When your child`s permanent teeth emerge, there`s not enough room for them. The result is crooked or crowded teeth and difficulties with chewing or speaking.

Space maintainers are used to hold the spot left by the lost tooth until the permanent tooth emerges. The space maintainer might be a band or a temporary crown attached to one side of the vacant space. Later, as the permanent tooth emerges, the device is removed.

We had an exceptional experience today with Dr Diaz and Kamille. Our 5 yo was VERY scared before his procedure today and they put his and our mind at ease. The process was clear, informed and extremely friendly. We'll be requesting Dr. Diaz for all cleanings and check ups from now on! She was fantastic

We have been driving almost an hour each way to Childrens dental zone for years. The staff from the minute you walk in the door to check out is always so kind. We love Dr. Proctor so much! They always take the time with us to explain everything. There are few places I leave my bubble for Childrens Dental Zone is one of them.

Incredibly friendly and informative staff . The team always gives an insurance estimate before anything is done. The environment is very kid friendly with entertaining wait space, screen distractions during cleanings and everyone is so patient with all ages...dedicated to a good experience (ie: not forcing X-rays etc). Our girls always countdown to their next visit they enjoy it so much; my experience was so different as an child and I am so thankful to have this practice takes a proactive approach to managing quality care! (Our middle child named her "sloth" after one of the doctors; if that's not a sign of compassion, not sure what is!)

My three year old son had his first dental appointment ever and we chose Children's Dental Zone. Everyone was kind, patient, and enthusiastic. My son responds heavily to the attitudes of the people around him and they set up the perfect environment for him to be comfortable. While there were still some struggles getting him to trust while they examined him, ultimately he left happy and confirmed "no it didn't hurt". We will be repeat customers!

I have always had a great experience! When my kids were toddlers, they really didn't like getting their teeth cleaned but they were so patient with them and made it even less stressful on me. Fantastic customer service from everyone!!

The dentists and hygienists are great. The front office and back office staff need additional training. They seemed junior and inexperienced. The process of checking out, in particular, was extremely inefficient and I simply wanted to get my kids back to school without further delay. The dentist was called over for no reason at all and when I explained I could not wait they still held me hostage. No respect for my time. Please do better.

We have been going to Children's Dental Zone for about seven years now! The staff is always so friendly and knowledgeable. They take their time and explain everything to my boys as they are doing it. I especially appreciate the extra care they take with my sensory sensitive kiddo - headphones, dim lights, blanket, etc. I highly recommend this place!

I called yesterday to schedule my child (age 4) as a new patient, they were able to get me in today. We were greeted by Ms. Paula (her energy was beyond friendly and bubbly) - she gave me and my little one a tour of the office and it was an amazing child friendly environment. We then went to Ms. Mayra - who was beyond patient with my daughter who was a little scared (I can not thank you enough for the level of care and comfort you provided). Dr. Hamilton, Ms. Shayna, and Ms. Edith all helped support with the care of my little one; from the beginning to the end, every single person remained warm and inviting- and for that I thank you all. My daughter enjoyed her time so well that when I went to drop her to school she announced it to everyone and said "I would tell my friends to go there because everyone was so nice to me and I got to watch a movie". My number one concern was comfort, and CDZ exceeded that request. I have also shared your information with her school's assistant director. Again, I thank you all for such an amazing experience for my little one.
