Childrens Dental Health of Lancaster is easily accessible from Route 30 and serves pediatric dental patients in the greater Lancaster area and beyond, allowing children to receive the restorative dental care needed to maintain a healthy smile. Our surgery center features state-of-the-art technology for superior surgical care, as well as comfortable, patient-centered spaces for children to receive treatment and recover from their procedure. We have a special space in our lobby for kids to enjoy toys and entertainment to reduce anxiety as they wait for their procedure to begin. Well do everything we can to ensure you and your childs comfort. You can find our Lancaster location across the street from Rohrerstown Elementary School next door to A&E Audiology & Hearing Aid Center.

Dental surgery can help alleviate fear, anxiety, and stress in young patients so that they no longer fear going to the dentist. It can also improve safety, as its important for patients to sit very still during dental procedures in order for dentists to use instruments and mechanical equipment safely. If children are unable to remain still and calm, then dental surgery may be the best option. The safety of children is always our priorityour anesthesiologists are state- and board-certified. We also have RNs present in the room at all times while patients are in surgery.

  • Not treating the teeth can result in a patient becoming in serve pain and possibly developing an abscess. An Abscess is a collection of pus that has accumulated in a cavity formed within a tissue because of an inflammatory process in response to either an infection process, usually caused by bacteria. An abscess can be very dangerous and lead to swelling and severe pain.
  • The proposed dental work that your child needs will be submitted to your dental insurance company to determine how much your dental insurance will cover. The following is a general breakdown of how dental insurances typically reimburse:

  • If your child is covered under a commercial dental plan: frequently these insurances break dental work into procedure types that require you, as the dental insurance holder, to be responsible for a percentage of the work completed. For example, if your child needs a filling, the insurance company may pay 80% of the reimbursable rate and you will be responsible for 20%. We are happy to work with you on navigating specific procedure costs.
  • Childrens Dental Surgery consists of four AAAHC-accredited ambulatory surgery centers, each offering a hospital-like setting for safely and effectively treating children in need of restorative dental work. Our centers are currently located in Lancaster, Malvern, Bethlehem, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and treat thousands of children each year. Our team of skilled providers includes board-certified pediatric dentists, board-certified anesthesiologists, and registered nurses to ensure every detail of our young patients treatment plan is handled with care.

Patients at Childrens Dental Surgery are treated while under general anesthesia, which means they will be unconscious to ensure they feel no pain during their procedure (this can also be referred to as sleep dentistry). In turn, while patients are sedated, our team of dental experts can complete their restorative work safely and effectively.

Complex restorative work is often not possible in the traditional dental office due to limitations with young patients ability to remain still for extended periods of time. If significant dental restoration is involved, the associated pain may require more sedation than is safe to provide in the dental office setting. Thats where our centers come in to play, offering pediatric dental providers the ability to treat children in a true surgical center environment, with a team that includes anesthesia experts to monitor childrens safety throughout their dental procedures.

Incorporating anesthesia professionals as we do allows dentists to exclusively focus on restoring your childs oral health while the anesthesia professional continuously monitors your child under sedation. This approach provides the safest, most personalized, and most expertly rendered approach to dental care.

Childrens Dental Surgery exists today with the mission of providing high-quality restorative care to children in need of complex dental treatment. However, many parents often question why their child should undergo dental surgery at such a young age, especially when baby teeth are not permanent. We understand these concerns and have outlined below several reasons for considering dental surgery for your child.

Children’s Dental Surgery of Bethlehem - Pediatric dentist in Bethlehem, PA

Dentists will recommend dental surgery (procedures under general anesthesia) when they believe the dental treatment required is too significant for the child to undergo in the dental office setting. Treatment may be significant in the sense that it will either cause great pain, or that it will take a longer time than the child may be able to tolerate sitting still for. If a child cannot sit still during restorative procedures, their safety is on the line. Our tools and equipment can cause injury or harm if the patient is unable to cooperate. For this reason, a child may be much safer to undergo their procedure with the help of general anesthesia.

Baby teeth save space for permanent/adult teeth. If a baby tooth is lost to decay early, the neighboring teeth may drift, causing there to be less space for erupting permanent teeth, leading to space and cosmetic issues down the line not to mention costly orthodontia. In addition, a decaying baby tooth may have an abscess forming underneath the roots that cannot be seen or felt. Because permanent teeth develop right underneath this infection, a large cavity could cause irreversible harm to the developing permanent tooth underneath. It is always wise to address dental issues with baby teeth, in order to ensure proper, healthy oral development as a child grows.

Between the buzzing equipment, bright lights, and sharp objects, complex dental treatment at a young age can often cause children to be scared of, or develop negative associations with, dentistry. Allowing children to sleep through their procedure ensures they maintain a more positive perception of oral healthcare and helps to alleviate fear and anxiety for future dental visits.

No one wants to see their child in pain. However, tooth decay can cause extreme pain for children both ongoing pain as well as sharp throbbing and spontaneous pain during certain activities, like eating or speaking. Dental surgery allows our experts to address the issue causing pain, so that your child may happily return to their everyday lives.

Studies have repeatedly shown a correlation between good oral health and good overall health. By addressing oral health issues and dental decay early on, you may be setting your child up for greater overall wellness as they grow.

The nurses are great. The dentist we had however does not listen. We expressly told him not to do things and he ignored our instructions for our son. He would rather rush through patients and bill extra to insurance doing unnecessary caps, which after talking to many friends and family whose children have come here they do quite often. I will never bring my child to this place again and the childrens dentist office in Forks that he works at will not see any of my children again. I will be reporting him to the licensing board.

Do your research and go elsewhere. While this place has a ton of experience in oral surgery, they really lack bedside manner especially with children. Our entire experience was very rushed and my son experienced delirium coming out of anesthesia. I understand that happens and it is no fault of the anesthesiologist. However, the way it was handled by his post-op nurse was plain unacceptable. I was called back to the room to meet my son, who was uncontrollably screaming, crying, and thrashing. I was attempting to comfort him but all his nurse seemed to care about was quieting him down long enough to read me the laundry list of post-op instructions and get us on her way home. In fact, she was yelling at him. As stated above, this facility has a ton of experience, but it was very impersonal and we were just another number here. Go to a facility that cares about your child.

My 5 year old son had dental surgery today at the Bethlehem location. I was super nervous about him being under general anesthesia, but the treatment team was amazing and answered all my questions. The experience went better than expected. Thank you for making this easy on both of us! My only issue was I wish another parent or family member could have accompanied us since he was crying and screaming when we left and I had a long car ride after, but I understand with covid that it's necessary and not a reflection on the surgery or staff. I'm super grateful we went to this surgery center and all went well.

I had so many fears as a mother going into this. First time going under anesthesia for my 3 year old. But the nurses, techs, anesthesiologist and dentist made me extremely comfortable and I knew my daughter was in good hands. Dr. Malay, you are the best!!!

Amazing people, friendly staff and helpful nurses. The call center was a little unprofessional but very friendly. My little man had a seamless surgery, the ratings scared me until I read them and realized the obvious truth The 1 star ratings are because of Covid restrictions, not the facilities. The facilities are excellent, and they take our insurance which is rare

I had a lot of fear around placing children under anesthesia. From the very beginning the staff made sure to explain the process thoroughly. I meet with the dentist, and anesthesiologist, which was great. Everyone was very informative and respected and listened to my concerns. The surgery went well and very quickly.

I was so nervous about my daughter (5) and her fear of the dentist. Although she still wasn't happy and that's putting it nicely. The staff and surgical team really made me feel comfortable, explained everything to me and went at my daughter's pace. Also, any question I had they were happy to answer. I would absolutely go back.

Had an appointment for 8.30am for my 5 year old son today to get a cavity fixed. Made my son Waite for 2 hours until someone would see him. Very unorganized. I had to Waite in the parking lot for hours until he was done with no bathroom. Please don't bring your children here if you love them all this place wants is your money! Not very friendly with kids either and won't let parents come in with the kids!

I think the drs are very nice and the people who put your child under is very good. My only major issue is the office staff. If they do there job right maybe families will not have to make long trip. I think they need retrain office staff questions they need to ask. I am looking else where to send my child with special needs.

Everyone there was was friendly, the facility was clean and orderly. The doctors and nurses were very concerned we were well informed going into the procedure and afterward for recovery. Glad we went to this center for our youngest son.
