My daughters had a great experience at Children's Dental Group. On their first visit, they were taken care of by Joshua and Dr. Bell. Both of them were excellent with my 2 and 3 year old! They did their best to calm them down when they were nervous, and they loaded them down with swag when they saw that they had no cavities. It was a great visit, and highly recommend them.

I took my kids here after we moved to SC almost 2 years ago. We didn't have any issues until my daughter ended up getting a cavity, they said she needed a crown on it and I trusted their judgment because they are supposed to be the professionals not me. About 6 months after her cap when she went for a checkup they showed an abscess on the X-ray and said it was likely from their needle leaving an air pocket and that it's very common for an abscess to form after a crown is placed on the tooth. I thought this was strange but still, they are supposed to be the professionals and not me. So they said they need to pull the tooth, at this point my 6 year daughter has to go through 2 surgeries and anesthesia and from what I gather the second issue was their own fault! We get the tooth pulled and now we are two months from that and she has an infection in the gums where they pulled that tooth. I just left the office and they are now telling me that they are seeing on her X-ray that they left part of her root in her gums! I am beyond livid and will not allow them to touch either one of my children's mouths again. This is absolutely ridiculous, I should be able to trust the dentist, not worry that what they recommend may cause more issues. It seems like one thing after another here and something so simple should not have produced all of these problems! I do not recommend this place and will be taking my children elsewhere.

My children absolutely love this dentist and so do I. They have been coming here since they were babies. We live in Sumter and the ride is worth coming all the way to Irmo. The whole staff is absolutely wonderful.

Horrified. I did NOT want my son (10) seen by a certain practitioner, who my son did not like, and who had recommended 5 fillings / crowns only 6 month after the previous dentist had said two of the effected teeth would soon be lost, and it was senseless to fill/crown them (especially as they were not bothering him). I requested a second opinion, and specifically moved my son's surgery date to have another dentist do the fillings. Despite my son being excessively anxious, I was NOT permitted to be present. I was told that they might restrain his hands during the procedure, so as not to have him reach out and grab stuff, which I understood. At the time of scheduling the appointment, and again on the day, I informed the practice that my son had a high tolerance for anesthetic, and to please ensure that he had enough sedative/anesthetic. When they wheeled my son out after an hour, I was horrified to learn that the dentist that I had specifically instructed should NOT to preformed the procedure, had attended to the fillings. Moreover, my son said he was completely restrained (ankles, knees, midriff, wrists, and shoulders!!!!) - BEFORE the procedure had begun. My son asked why he was being strapped down, and was only told "so that you don't fall off of the bed". The dentist in question did not introduce himself, nor greet my son, let alone ask him if he was doing ok before/during the procedure. My son also reported that no-one (incl the dentist) had poked his gums to ask whether he could feel anything (the way MY dentist ensures that the anesthetic has taken effect). My son was terrified. He said that he felt some of the drilling, but was unable to communicate at all. His body was bound, his forehead held down, and he could not speak with the suctions thingie in his mouth. If parents are not permitted into the room - how DARE they restrain the child to the point that they are unable to advocate for themselves! By the office manager's own admission, my son had "done well" - so why the excessive restraints? When my son came out, he was a little woozy but able to walk and completely alert. I was surprised! Clearly the sedation was less potent than I had expected - but by the time we got home, my son was stumbling, slurring and barely able to construct meaningful sentences. In my son's own words, "I think the sedative is only starting to kick in now". I TOLD the practice that he had a high tolerance of anesthesia (and by extension, I would think sedation, also). What did the staff do to ensure his sedation and anesthetic had taken effect??? To me, it looks like he was fully alert during the procedure (the orderly even said he was asking lots of questions as he was being bound) and it only became fully effective after he was released. I am simply horrified. Demanding to speak to her, the dental assistant who had scheduled the procedure said there had been a mistake and apologized that the wrong doctor had attended to him. But it then came out that not only had someone 'moved him to another room' because they were 'running behind' (at 9.10am), but SHE was actually PRESENT and didn't recognize my son!!! "How many patients do you think we see in a day?" she asked me. I would argue that THAT is PRECISELY the problem... TOO MANY PATIENTS! They are running this practice as a sausage factory! I must have seen ten children come and go in the 60min that I was waiting for my son. If Children's Dental Group is SC cannot give enough individual attention to their child-patients, then I would argue that they are trying to cram too many patients into a day!!! It is my impression (with their eagerness to scedule unnecessary fillings / crowns, 'running behind' at 9.10am, and negligently making mistakes like having my son seen by the practitioner that I *specifically* instructed should NOT see him) that this practice is putting profit ahead of patient welfare. The handling of my son was despicable. I will certainly NOT be returning, and would caution any other parents before making the decision to visit here. Absolutely shameful.
