Drs. Chermak and Hanson use a combined orthodontics/orthopedic approach to treat malocclusion and facial imbalance. This type of treatment focuses on guiding the growth of the jaws while simultaneously straightening the teeth and generally allows the treatment of most problems without the extraction of permanent teeth! This more progressive treatment method also usually allows us to avoid older alternatives such as extensive use of the headgear appliance, extraction of teeth and/or jaw surgery.
From a young age, Dr. David Chermak knew that he was interested in the medical field. But it was the great experiences he had with his dentist and orthodontist that influenced him to pursue dentistry. A native of California, Dr. Chermak graduated from the University of Kentucky receiving a Bachelors of Business and Administration degree with a major in finance. He attended the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, where he was a member of both Psi Omega and Phi Delta Honorary Dental Societies. He earned his Certification in Orthodontics and Masters degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.
Upon graduating, he knew he wanted to live in the South and moved to Raleigh, NC. He worked for a practice there for less than a year and then joined Drs. McLain and Steedle. Dr. Chermak and his wife, Marci, then moved to Winston Salem, where they have lived since 2001.
Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. John Hanson learned from his family at a young age the value of hard work and making a difference in the lives of others. He enjoyed finding out how things worked by taking them apart. An engineer at heart, he attended The Ohio State University to study mechanical engineering. After accepting an internship with NASA in Cleveland his junior year, Dr. Hanson transferred to the Fenn College of Engineering at Cleveland State University, where he completed his undergraduate studies with honors, earning a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree. After working with the General Electric Company as a field engineer, he felt that there was something more he wanted to do. It wasnt until he went to work one day with his wife, a dental hygienist, that he found his true calling - orthodontics.
Dr. Hanson decided to return to school for his dental degree, with the help of his wife who supported the growing family during this time. He graduated with honors at the top 5% of his class at the University of Illinois at Chicago. They moved to Charlotte, where he practiced general dentistry before attending the University of Rochester, Eastman Dental Center, for his certification in Orthodontics. He not only was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society, but was also awarded the American Association of Orthodontists Award.
He and his wife, Michelle, have five children: two girls and three boys. He enjoys his busy family life, outdoor activities, such as fishing and hiking, and home improvement projects. He also enjoys giving back to the community and is actively involved in community activities, his church and Little League sports.

Dr. Chermak and all the girls in the office were great with explaining everything from the consultation through putting the brackets on and showing her how to take care of the braces and what to expect. Dr. Chermak personally checked in that evening to see how she was and to tell her how great she did. It made her feel cared about. That kind of personal touch really went a long way.

This was our first time and it was a very upbeat environment everyone was so friendly and caring for my 7 year old. Dr. Henson was polite and explained everything well. 10 out 10 for me!

6 out of my 6 children have been here and wouldn't take them anywhere else. The doctors and the staff are SO SO SO good with the kids. They also offer a multi child discount and set up non-interest payment plans for those that can't drop 5K at one time. My children's teeth have ended up looking so much better because of these folks.

Genuinely enjoyed our visit here. We are at the beginning of my child's braces journey, but the office staff has been very helpful and patient with any questions we've had. The office itself is very clean and easily accessible from the road. I would definitely recommend to anyone in need of an orthodontist.

I am a 58 year old who has gotten braces for the first time. Dr Chermak and his wonderful staff have made this an easy experience. Especially Sherry who helps me each time I go in for my adjustments. I would highly recommend Dr Chermak or Dr Hanson.

Dr. Hanson and his staff are amazing. They have made my granddaughter and I feel comfortable from the start of her treatment at their office. In today's time you see a lot of medical offices that are rushed and abrupt even when answering your phone calls. The staff gives first good impressions by answering in pleasant and calm voices. We were so lucky to find such a welcoming place. I feel it will be a good experience for my granddaughter. Thank you Dr. Hanson and staff from Ella and Kim.
