Dr. Chen grew up in Southern California, graduated from UCLA with cum laude honors, and afterwards, attained a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from USC. Dr. Chen earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from USC, graduating third in a class of 124 dental students. He was honored with the Everitt V. Payne Memorial Award and membership into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, an honorary dental fraternity.
Following two years of private practice in Phoenix, AZ, Dr. Chen chose to further his interest in orthodontics by entering the University of Colorado Specialty Residency in 2005. Trained under respected leaders in the orthodontic profession, he attained great proficiency in the newest techniques, such as Invisalign, clear and self-ligating brackets, Damon Smile, and temporary anchorage devices. He graduated with the Co-Outstanding Resident Award. He also obtained prestigious board certification status for the years 2007-2012.
Dr. Chen lives in Bakersfield with his wife Trisha and his daughter and son, Lana and James. Outside of the office, he enjoys a variety of outdoor activities such as golfing, cycling, skiing, swimming, and hiking. He also enjoys baking with his daughter, bike riding around the neighborhood with his kids, working on computers, and learning new skills. In addition to English, he is fluent in Chinese and Taiwanese.
This year, 2018, marks the tenth year Dr. Chen first began his practice in Bakersfield. With the goal of providing the best service to all the patients, Dr. Chen and our staff are excited to move into a brand new, state-of-art new location. Featuring some of the newest technology the orthodontic field has to offer, the brand new facility utilizes impression-less 3D real-time scanning and virtual setup, CBCT ultra low radiation X-ray machine, and a streamlined sterilization center. The technology and the new facility allow Dr. Chen to deliver cutting-edge treatment in the most comfortable setting.
A beautiful smile is usually the main reason to seek orthodontic treatment and the obvious benefit of braces. There are, however, many other benefits that are often overlooked. In addition to dental aesthetics, Dr. Chen emphasizes treatments plans aimed to enhance facial aesthetics, a Face Driven treatment plan. Designed in anticipation of the short- and long-term impacts of treatment on each patient's face and profile, its purpose is to improve function, harmonize the jaw relationship, and establish the optimal dental and gingival (gum) health.
Because no two patients are exactly alike, Dr. Chen will customize the most effective and efficient treatment to address each patient's individual needs and concerns. Utilizing the latest technology, Dr. Chen is able to move teeth more efficiently, with greater comfort while, in selected cases, reducing the need to extract teeth.

Dr Chen and his amazing staff were the most sincere and professional group my daughter and I had the pleasure of doing business with. From our first consultation to her last appointment with getting her braces off, my daughters experience was purely a delightful transformation that she will forever cherish. The office is well kept and the staff were always pleasant. Especially Nancy, she was so genuine and made you feel like family. I've been in treatment with doctor Chen since the beginning of the year and right off the bat he was great! His staff is wonderful and his ladies up front are amazing! Soon after I started my treatment I brought my daughter on as well; still another really good experience and everything went very smoothly. Then as life would have it I faced a series of financial hardships and I felt really discouraged and feared I wouldn't be able to finish mine or my daughter's treatment. BUT like I said earlier doctor Chens front office ladies are amazing and worked with me.... And worked with me some more. And while we worked out the financial part doctor Chen never skipped a beat with my treatment and always gives me and my teeth the care they need.I honestly don't even think he concerns himself at all with the money matters ( unlike some establishments I've been to) It feels good to know that I'll finally be able to have the smile I've wanted for so long.

I had a really good experience with Chen Ortho. Dr. Chen takes the time to explain the whole treatment & is very patient. The staff is great with accommodating my schedule considering I worked night shifts. They did it with a positive attitude & without hesitations. They were also very good with accommodating payments. Two of my sons see Dr. Chen with a 3rd son to be treated soon. They both have the Herbst appliance, braces and 1 with an expander. I chose Dr. Chen after seeing another ortho. Chen was much more knowledgeable. His prices are better than others around town, has a very clean office, and explains everything thoroughly. I was impressed by his skill but also his humble and pleasant demeanor.
