As the first part of accreditation, this exam is designed to test applicants' foundational knowledge, with a particular emphasis on aesthetics. If the applicant passes this exam, they can proceed to the next step in the process.

During the clinical case submissions portion of the accreditation, dentists have the opportunity to demonstrate their diagnostic skills and clinical excellence. In addition to passing the written exam, applicants must also attend two workshops before this step. Once they have qualified, doctors must complete five case types that demonstrate excellence in a range of dental disciplines. The five required case types are:

Following the completion of the written examination and the submission of the required clinical cases, the AACD administers an oral examination to verify and authenticate the dentist's casework and to evaluate their treatment abilities.

During the exam, doctors are tested on their knowledge and familiarity with diagnosis, treatment planning, materials, and various techniques. Once the dentist has successfully completed the oral examination phase, they will become an Accredited Member of the AACD.

Becoming an Accredited Member of the AACD represents a doctor's skill, knowledge, and dedication as a leader in the field of cosmetic dentistry. The accreditation process is held in high esteem throughout the dental community and is universally recognized as the gold standard in cosmetic dentistry.
