Edmund L. W. Char, DMDDr. Char was born and raised in Kailua, Oahu and graduated from the Kamehameha Schools and from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He completed a post-graduate doctorate degree in dental medicine at the Oregon Health Sciences University School of Dentistry.
Dr. Char established his practice in 1998 in the Ala Moana Building. As the practice grew, they decided to move to the new office in the summer of 2014, across from the historic Honolulu Advertiser Building to raise the level of patient experience in a more modern office.
Peter T. Mashimo, DDSDr. Mashimo has been in private practice for 47 years. His Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree was attained at the University of Missouri. He started with his dad in their Downtown-Honolulu office then moved to our current location. He is actively practicing quality dentistry today. He also is active in the community and his place of worship. Dr. Mashimo takes pride in providing painless dentistry to our patients.
Devi Krieg Dental HygienistDevi has been part of our team for over forty years! After receiving training from the University of Michigan Dental School, Devi began working in the dental industry and loves helping patients care for their smiles. She enjoys being a part of our family at Char Dental, and has become good friends with many of our patients! Devi has been married to her husband, Mark, for over 30 years. Their daughter, Kristin, lives in North Dakota. Tuesday night is date night, and Devi and her husband have only missed three times in the past seven years!Luana Rittmeister Dental AssistantLuana has been helping care for our patients smiles for over thirty years at our practice! She loves forging relationships and friendships with our patients and being part of a friendly team. Luanas positive attitude and cheerful smile brighten our office, and were fortunate to have her on our team! Luana is married and is blessed with three daughters, three sons-in-laws, and nine amazing grandchildren! Luanas favorite show is Facing the Giants.
SueAnn Antone Dental AssistantSueAnn has been with our practice since graduating with her training in dental assisting in 2007. She loves the environment at Char Dental and contributes each day as part of our caring team. She enjoys spending time with her son, Jaedyn, and her 12-month-old daughter Jaeley. Her favorite show is Law & Order SVU, and SueAnn loves food and makeup!
Kristi Thi Dental AssistantKristi has been one of our assistants for over ten years and enjoys helping our patients feel better about their smiles! Her training, work ethic, attention to detail, and friendly attitude make her a great asset to our incredible team! She is bilingual (Chinese and English) and enjoys spending time with her wonderful husband and their teenage son. In her spare time, Kristi enjoys cooking, reading, and watching Korean drama.
Rose Hawkins Patient Treatment CoordinatorRose has been a part of our practice for nearly twenty years, educating and our patients about their dental care and answering their questions. She loves the friendships we have among our team and with our patients! She enjoys spending time with her husband, Forrest, her two grown daughters, Krishelle, and Liz, and three grandchildren.

I visited Dr. Char's office today and was going in for a consultation about a tooth. We ended up pulling it the same day which I was happy about because it was giving me a lot of pain. The first thing I noticed when I walked into the office was the cleanliness as well as the professionalism of each staff member. They were kind and helpful. As Dr. Char and I discussed the options regarding my tooth extraction, I was impressed with how informative he and his assistant were. I asked many questions and they were patient and happily answered each one. At one point, I asked his assistant which toothbrushes, toothpastes, and flossers she recommended. She was eager to inform me and I got a mini lesson in brushing and flossing properly. (Which was great!) I also appreciated how Dr. Char explained the procedure step by step before performing it, stopping along the way to ask if I had any questions. He and his staff helped me feel comfortable and treated me with aloha. The extraction itself went smoothly and overall, I definitely recommend Char Dental.

The staff is awesome n sweet, which makes it a comfortable atmosphere. Even when getting your teeth drilled ha ha. Dr Char is meticulous a true artist at his craft. Choosing Dr Char dental on a scale of 1 thru 10 a definite 10. Happy that I did.

I've been richly so blessed by Dr Edmund Char & awesome, professional team. They worked me into this morning's schedule. So I may receive much needed dental treatment. That saved me from driving back into town from the Windward side of the island. I highly recommend to all my 'ohana & friends.

I have been going to Dr Char for about 30 years now. I can always count on him and his staff to provide top notch service. My recent visit involved X-ray , exam and cleaning. As always they did a great job and always has the time to give advice on how I can better take care of my teeth. I highly recommend this clinic for anyone.

Dr. Char and his staff are excellent! I started going to his office about a year ago and can highly recommend him to my friends and family. Exams and cleanings are very thorough and done well. Dr. Char and his staff are very friendly and I feel comfortable at each visit.

Another best possible experience with Dr. Char and his professional, personable, and caring hygienist for a cleaning and check-up. Appointments are kept on schedule, waiting area and offices are clean, staff are friendly. A compliment about my home care is always appreciated and inspires me to keep it up :-) Bad news about possible dental concerns are delivered with options and Dr. Char allows me to make decisions about my treatments - no pressure. When required treatment is greater than my insurance will cover, Rose has worked with me to find payment options. And I'm always sent home with a goodie bag of dental cleaning supplies and samples.

Dr. Edmund Char, DDS I've been Dr. Char's patient for about 20 years, starting with his predecessor firm, Dr. Bob Gibson DDS, about thirty-five years ago, my first dentist in Honolulu, (his father was one of the first in Hawaii, I'm told), so he must be doing something right. *** I inherited from Dr. Bob my relationship with my platinum-standard dental hygienist of many years, Devi Krieg, now sadly moving to the Dakotas to be nearer to her daughter, and I also was able to continue enjoying the skills of office manager Rose, a wizard with navigating the complex and ever changing dental insurance coverage rules, who is under recognized but brings an essential skill to the table. *** Inherited healthcare providers aren't always a good fit, and I stayed on with Dr. Char due to his being adept in traditional dental skills but also his keeping up with dental technology, such as the ability to make and install crowns in one appointment by digital oral scanning and computer assisted machine shaping of a composite ceramic material, matching your tooth color precisely and as durable as porcelain but then eliminating the need to have plastic temporaries which would require a second appointment. *** It has been a very challenging time for healthcare professionals of all kinds and these days many of mine, even those much younger than I, have been retiring at an alarming rate, but due to the close quarters of performing the work, probably none more so than dental practitioners. It's something we take for granted until there's a problem (and for me it usually happened at 30,000 feet on my way to SouthEast Asia or the US mainland) but these days it's being revealed how essential it is to be working with somebody really responsible and accomplished. And Dr. Char and those in his office are a small group of the very few in Honolulu who have, over a long time, demonstrated their expertise to me.

Aloha! For almost 20 years, I have felt the great sense of relief & security that I receive the BEST DENTAL CARE IN HAWAII, from Dr. Edmund Char & his very, exceptionally cohesive staff. These are people whom I've grown to consider to be my friends. They all take care of you. From the moment you open the door to their impeccable warm, office, with classical music calming you, it's easy to see that these folks are a cut above everyone else. Dr. Char.& his team of absolutely fantastic, dental pro's provide everything you could ever want in this 'best of Honolulu' dental practice. They do everything professionally, with great teamwork, intelligence & safety. They listen to me. They explain things clearly. Yet, what I truly love is that these folks really have communicated with me better than just about any medical practice I can recall in my long life.
