Dr. Cavanaugh, a life-long St. Louisan, had his first orthodontic experience as a patient of Dr. Matlof and Dr. Waxler in Manchester! Inspired by their work, Dr. Cavanaugh pursed his interest in orthodontics and attended the Six-Year B.A./D.D.S. Program at the University of Missouri - Kansas City, earning a degree in biology and his dental degree in 1994.
During summer breaks of dental school, Dr. Cavanaugh returned to the office where he received treatment and had the opportunity to work for Dr. Matlof and Dr. Waxler as an orthodontic assistant, further reinforcing his desire to follow their career path. He continued his training at UMKC finishing his orthodontic residency in 1996. Dr. Cavanaugh then had the opportunity to join the practice that same year.
Outside of practice, Dr. Cavanaugh has been very involved with organized dentistry. He was a member of the board of the Delta Dental Health Theatre, serving as president for two years. As a member of the theater, he worked alongside fellow dental professionals and those in the dental industry to provide dental education for children, especially those who have little access to dental care. Dr. Cavanaugh also sat on the board of the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation and served as president in 2007-2008. Dr. Cavanaugh is also passionate about his community and served as co-president of the PTO at Fairway Elementary when the school first opened in 2004.
Dr. Cavanaugh and his wife Linzi met in dental school. Linzi practices general dentistry in Frontenac as an associate of Dr. Doxey Sheldon. Together they have four children: Margaret, Katherine, Ryan, and Joe. Margaret graduated from Syracuse University and now lives in New York working for Edelman. Katherine graduated from Columbia University and returned to St. Louis to work for Abbott. Ryan attends Miami University and is studying finance and computer science. Joe is in high school at Chaminade.
In his free time, Dr. Cavanaugh enjoys traveling the country watching Joes teams play soccer and lacrosse. When he is not spending time working in his yard, he is all about watching the Cardinals and the Blues and looks forward to cheering on the new MLS team.

Dr Cavanaugh and his staff are amazing! Making appointments was easy and always on time. No long waits.... I am an adult and he straightened my bottom teeth. He was conscientious about my timing and really worked with my travel schedule. My teeth look great and I would be happy to recommend him to anyone else!

Century Orthodontics has worked with 4 out of 6 of our family members. Even though we present challenges, Dr. Cavanaugh and his staff are so patient, kind, thorough, and willing to work through any problem that myself or my kids have had with our teeth or other issues that have arisen with orthodontics. Words and reviews cannot express how thoroughly grateful I am to the Century Orthodontics team for how beautiful mine and my kids' teeth are through treatment. Great staff! They walked us through how to care for the teeth with my son's braces. Dr. Cavanaugh is wonderful! The assistant called to ask how he was doing the day after he got his braces. They were very thorough and caring! I recommend anyone that needs braces to go to Century Orthodontics!!! We are very happy with my son's braces, just like my daughter's. Thank you for making so stress free!!
