Dr. Michelle M. Backhaus, a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist, grew up in Averill Park, New York (a suburb of Albany). She attended Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, New Jersey, and graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Biology in 2000. Thereafter, she attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia where she received her D.M.D. in 2003. While at Penn, she was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon and Matthew Cryer Dental Honor Societies and graduated at the top of her class.
After dental school, Dr. Backhaus continued her postgraduate studies at New York University and received her certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in 2005. While at NYU, Dr. Backhaus spent time at Rose F. Kennedy Hospital, NYU Tisch Medical Center, Lutheran Medical Center, and Bellevue Hospital.
Dr. Backhaus is a member of numerous professional organizations including, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the New Jersey Association of Pediatric Dentists, the American Dental Association, the New Jersey Dental Association, the Middlesex County Dental Society, and the American Academy of Laser Dentistry. Dr. Backhaus is affiliated with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, as an active attending, of the Pediatric Dental Dept., as well currently holds the position of Vice President for the New Jersey Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Backhaus is married to her colleague, Dr. Christopher Overcash and they reside in Monmouth County with their son, Preston, and their daughter, Emerson. When not in the office, Dr. Backhaus enjoys traveling, skiing, reading a good book, and spending time with family and friends.
Dr. Christopher R. Overcash, a New Jersey native, grew up in Medford, NJ. He attended Roanoke College in Virginia where he graduated with honors in Biology in 1998. A 2003 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Overcash earned a Certificate in Orthodontics from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in 2005.
Dr. Overcash has received numerous awards and honors. While at the University of Pennsylvania, he was a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Society. The National Board Part II Honors and the Matthew Cryer Honor Society. He received the Achievement Award in Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the Columbia Dento-form Corp. Award and the International College of Dentists Award.
Dr. Overcash belongs to several prestigious professional organizations, including, the American Association of Orthodontists, the New Jersey Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the New Jersey Dental Association, and the Middlesex County Dental Society. Dr. Overcash is the past President of the New Jersey Association of Orthodontists.
Dr. Overcash lives in Monmouth County with his wife and colleague, Dr. Michelle Backhaus. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his children, Preston and Emerson, traveling and watching his favorite sports teams compete.

Both of my kids have had positive experiences with this office. The office staff are very professional. Dr. Backus & Dr. Overcash and their dental hygienists are thorough, patient and kind when treating my children. They're highly recommended!

We took our daughter for her first ever dentist appointment and had the greatest experience. The staff was friendly and attentive. Eleanor and Rose at the front desk were SO helpful with insurance info and coverage (which I know nothing about). Dr Backhaus was kind and reassuring, and the hygiene staff was beyond knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Not to mention, a beautiful and clean office! Fantastic first experience - I highly recommend!!!!

Dr. Backhaus, Dr. Overcash and Staff are AMAZING!!! My son and daughter have been going to them for years! Their staff is warm and friendly . Dr. Backhaus and Dr. Overcash are so friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Best Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist in the area!

This is a great practice. I have been taking my children to Dr. Bachaus and Dr. Overcast for years. Everyone is friendly, and they take great care of your children. The office and exam rooms are clean and very relaxing. My sons are autistic, and they take excellent care of them. The doctors and staff are very caring and patient. I would highly recommend Central Jersey Pediatric Dentistry.

Super friendly staff and doctor. We have been going there for years now and they make it so much fun and comfortable for my child that he actually looks forward to the visit. I would recommend this practice to all my friends and family !!

The professionalism coupled with the genuine love for children as well as their work was absolutely amazing. The office is bright and welcoming. The way that the entire staff dealt with my toddler boys was so awesome. I would definitely recommend Central Jersey Pediatric Dentistry to my family and friends.

My kids have been going here for many years. Very nice and dedicated staff and excellent dentists. Thorough, provide documentation for procedures beyond routine cleanings and on call as needed. Provide paperwork for each cleaning such as dental hygiene and ways to improve. Try and take both of my kids at once to make it easy. Excellent hygienists. Nice waiting area (pre-Covid). I recommend this practice highly.

I was very impressed with this practice. This was my first visit after having to leave a practice I loved due to insurance changes. I was greeted at the door by one of the front desk staff. She was very interactive from the moment we stepped in. Sue was our dental hygienist. She was AMAZING with my daughter! She explained everything to her in a kid friendly manner. Dr. Baukhas was great as well. Very knowledgeable and explained everything I needed to know about my daughter's teeth. Overall the environment was very light and gentle and peaceful as it should be in a pediatric practice. The office was very clean as well. The whole entire process was smooth even down to when it was time to checkout. I believe I found my dental home. I highly recommend!

Excellent pediatric dentist!! Dr. Backhaus and her team made my child feel very comfortable even through her first cavity. The office staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is clean and modern. I would highly recommend this practice and dentist.

I was extremely nervous about how my 2 1/2 year-old would behave for his first ever appointment, but the staff was beyond wonderful and warm. The office was spotless and we are so happy that we chose this practice for our son. Definitely recommend!

My children have been patients since Dr. Sherman owned the practice back in 2003. Dr. Overcash and Dr. Backhus took over after his retirement and it's been just as wonderful of an experience! The front desk ladies Eleanor especially are so accommodating and pleasant. The hygienist are like family to my kids. My kids have been through braces as well and it's just has been an overall great stress free experience! My daughter is now 19 and refuses to leave, "I'm staying here forever" is her exact words! Thank you to everyone at Central Jersey pediatrics Dentistry you guys ROCK!!!!

Can't say enough good things about this office. Went here when I was a kid and Dr. Sherman was there and decided to take my kids here. Dr. Backhaus is wonderful and a great dentist! Dr. Overcash is just as good. It def helps when the hygienist I had when I was a child is still there. They are patient and helpful and the staff is always friendly. I would def recommend this office!
