Community Health Development, Inc. (CHDI) was founded in 1983 to increase access to primary health care services for the people of Uvalde, Real, Edwards, and Zavala Counties. CHDI is a not-for-profit community health center that annually delivers care to almost 11,000 individuals. Our mission is to improve the health and well being of the community we serve. We fulfill our mission by providing high quality medical, dental, and behavioral health care services to all. We are recognized by the National Committee on Quality Assurance as a Patient Centered Medical Home meaning that we provide health care that is relationship-based with an orientation toward the whole person. Partnering with patients and their families requires understanding and respecting each patients unique needs, culture, values, and preferences. The medical home practice actively supports patients in learning to manage and organize their own care at the level the patient chooses. CHDI has also been recognized as a 2021 Health Center Quality Leader by the Health Resources and Services Administration. This award means that CHDI is in the top 30% of health centers nationwide for best overall clinical performance. Ms. Mayela Castaon serves as Chief Executive Officer for Community Health Development, Inc. (CHDI) in Uvalde, Texas. Prior to becoming CEO in December 2019, Ms. Castaon served as the organizations Chief Financial Officer for over nineteen years. Her experience in health center, general, financial and grants management operations are a tremendous asset in her role as CEO. Ms. Castanon has led the agency through the COVID-19 public health emergency by maintaining a firm vision on the health and safety of the agencys patients and staff. Under her leadership, CHDI has been at the forefront of screening, testing, and working with community leaders for the well-being of the community.

Ms. Castaon earned a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration, with a major in Accounting and a minor in Economics from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas in 1993. Ms. Castaon also worked full-time and, along with her husband, raised two children while attending college.

Prior to joining CHDI, Ms. Castaon successfully managed the fiscal operations of multiple manufacturing companies in the Uvalde area, implementing cost controls, aggressively pursuing and securing operational and capital revenue, and serving as an Internal Auditor.

As CFO, Ms. Castaon was dedicated to ensuring the agencys financial stability through on-going refinements of the agencys internal controls and financial reporting system. She developed and implemented effective general accounting procedures, introduced various programs to monitor cost controls, improved staff and operational efficiency, and enhanced the agencys staff recruitment and retention efforts. Ms. Castaon oversaw the agencys successful MIS conversion to NextGen in 2010 with minimal interruptions in cash flow.

Ms. Castaon is very committed to staff development and continuously seeks out educational opportunities for all staff. Ms. Castaon also works closely with the Board on strategic and long-range financial planning to ensure that the agency remains financially viable.

At the Center For Community Weelness the visit was exceptional. I visited for a toothe ache and was greated by the best staff I've seen at any Doctor's office from the administration, nurse and the Doctor, everyone trwated me with kindness and respect and was very informative for the visit. I'm suoer thankful for them.
