Carolina Smiles Family Dental is a Brevard based family dentist practice that treats patients of all ages. Everyone has a great story and I have been inspired as I get to know my patients and witness their triumphs. My patients and staff help me see not only the bright side of life, but also make me more aware of everyones unique challenges and viewpoints. My greatest joy is to fix a problem for a patient that has impacted their quality of life. From a beautiful smile to a great fitting denture to a painless injection, I aim to exceed expectations. Quite simply, I love people and I love fixing thingsespecially teeth!
I attended the University of the Pacific for my dental training, earning a Doctorate of Dental Surgery. My formal education in dentistry has provided me with a strong foundation of knowledge and experience. By regularly participating in continuing education, I am able to stay current on the latest technology and dental treatments. My patients deserve the best, and continuing education allows me to provide my patients with more options and better results.
Originally from Southern California and Phoenix, Arizona, I now reside in Brevard with my wonderful family. My wife, Randi, and I have five children, Bartel, Chloe, Annie, Oliver, and Charlie. I love spending time with my children, and watching as they grow and change through the years.
My leisure activities include restoring classic VWs, off-road racing, and volunteering with the Boy Scouts, of which I am an Eagle Scout. I am also a pastor at my church and support Farming for Family.
The thing that excites me most about dentistry is that I never know what amazing challenge awaits when I see a patient for the first time. No two patients are the same and its like a puzzle I get to solve to help each patient to their satisfaction. My patients come from every walk of life, and it always amazes me how happy they all are. No matter where they are or what is going on, they have good attitudes. This always humbles me and makes me appreciate all of my blessings.
I take being a dental professional very seriously. My patients come to me needing my help with dental issues and place their trust in my abilities. I try to treat everyone as I would treat my own familyby giving them my professional opinion and allowing them to make the choices that are right for their unique situation.
Dentistry is always evolving and I like to be on the cutting edge. This requires me to participate in many continuing education courses and be active in professional organizations like the American Dental Association and the North Carolina Dental Association.
I feel blessed to be able to offer a service to people who are in need. Building relationships based on trust is something in which I pride myself. There is no better feeling than having a patient who avoided the dentist for years become regular patients because of the trust weve built together. It is always my goal to treat patients with the same care that I would a member of my family.
I completed my undergraduate education at Arizona State University and continued on to Indiana University School of Dentistry for my Doctorate of Dental Surgery. Through continuing education, I am able to stay on the cutting-edge of current dental treatments and always offer my patients the most sophisticated treatment options. I have completed extensive CAD/CAM and digital dentistry education, as well as training on dental implants.
Originally from Mesa, Arizona, I currently reside near Brevard with my wife, Jenna, our three beautiful daughters, Macy, Ava, and Paige, and handsome little boy Memphis. One of the best parts of living in this area is the wonderful natural resources we have. I enjoy spending my free time hunting and fishing in the great North Carolina outdoors.

The office is up to date and nice. Dr. Shane and the other staff were all helpful. I was very happy with the results of my cleaning and root canal. What knocked off 2 stars was the fact that I can *never* get a hold of anyone when I try to call. I think out of 15 phone calls over several days, at different times of day, they've maybe answered once. My husband tried the online inquiry since he's not a patient yet and it's been over a month now with no response. The phone number on a Google search is different from the phone number on the website. I've tried both with the same result: no response. I loved the office itself but if I can never reach anybody to make an appointment I'm not sure how long I'll continue being a patient here.

Richie and Stephanie went the extra mile for by staying late to put a temporary crown on a tooth that was cracked. I have dental traumas left over from childhood and they were kind and professional all around. And also Dr Richie is wonderful and my experience was painless!

Not sure why there are so many great reviews for this place. I take very good care of my teeth and was told that I had many cavities and needed to return. When I returned to have the cavities fixed they anesthetized both my upper and lower jaw to the extent that I couldn't tell whether or not I was swallowing or breathing. It seemed like a very unsafe approach to the situation. After seeing another dentist I was told I would have to have all of those fillings redone because it was done poorly. Another member of my family went and was told they had 4 cavities by this practice. They then went to another dentist for a second opinion and was told that they did not have any cavities.

I love that Carolina Smiles has 7 am appointments and was able to get me in for a dental emergency. Staff was efficient, kind, and competent. I will be back!

I have always had a pleasant experience. The office is clean and comfortable. I have not waited for more than ten minutes. The staff is knowledgeable and courteous. You can tell that they enjoy their work and do it well. I highly recommend this practice to everyone!

What a great experience I had yesterday with Dr Gunnells. He did a crown for me and I never felt a thing. He and the assistant were caring and competent. The novacaine (sp?) they used was quickly effective and wore off shortly after leaving the office. I don't know why I dreaded having the work done...it was so easy. thank you, Jane Wheeless

I love Carolina Smiles, they are professional and Kind. Dr. Garret is my favorite and he doesn't push unnecessary procedures. He takes time to explain what needs to be done urgently which helps me financially. He saw my daughter who is Autistic and Developmentally Delayed adult. He was able to explain to her on her level of understanding which allows her total independence when having her appointments from her payments to scheduling. I met his brother Richie yesterday new to the office new to the mountains. I love this practice and as long as I'm in the area I choose them to care for me. I highly recommend this practice.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this practice!! We were visiting from out of town and my daughter had a dental emergency. Everyone at Carolina Smiles bent over backwards to make sure she had a pleasant experience and I couldn't be more grateful! I only wish we had a Carolina Smiles where we live!
